Yesterday was very cool and cloudy. A seasonal change had clearly settled in. Today is much the same. The leaves are turning, the limelight hydrangea is turning pink, the skies are gray and we have to turn the heat on in the morning. It was a rather melancholy day for both of us. Suddenly, we found ourselves looking ahead and talking about buying a snowblower that is more modest in size. Our current machine is very, very heavy and I can’t even push it. Don has trouble with it and with his hand problems, I think we need something either of us can navigate.
I always hope that my small paycheck can go into our savings account, but it looks like some of it will go towards a new snow blower. A good investment, for sure, but isn’t it always something?
I took it easy yesterday. I sent out notes to the actors, read a bit, took a short nap.
And I decided it was time to change Harper’s clothes. I came up with this:
Having mint green hair does have an impact on color choices. I put the outfit on her and then started going through my hats. This one was perfect.
She’s really, really gorgeous. I wish you could see her in person. Ferro Dolls are – to me – exquisite. The hand painting that she does is so detailed. Tiny little red veins in the cheeks, shadowing around the eyes, beautifully drawn eyebrows. I could study her face for hours.
I never thought I’d go for mint green hair and planned on finding a scalp replacement for her, but now I love it. Her previous owner told me she tried various other colors but none of them worked as well as the mint green. I get it. And Ferro Dolls clearly painted the face with the hair color in mind.
Still fully immersed in The Ink Black Heart.
Netflix magically came back. I had been checking on it every few days and suddenly, there it was. I signed back in and now we’re finishing the series we had been watching.
I suppose it’s time to mow again, but I really don’t feel like it today. Maybe tomorrow.
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.
Brendab says
This happens with a Netflix sometimes
If I watch it on my IPad it might disappear on television.
I do not watch it much. I like Hulu..
Have a good day..enjoy your book and your mowing if you mow…that snow blower sounds wise my friend.

Thanks so much, Brenda.
Stay safe.

We have the season shift here in the north, too. This morning it was 30 and so foggy you couldn’t see across the lake. You couldn’t even see as FAR as the lake and we’re on the beach. The sun’s out now and they say it will be about 60 today and sunny, so that’s a plus. I’m hoping I can gather enough strength and energy to take a short walk. I hate missing on these beautiful days on my last visit here when they are so few (and weather is due to get gloomier toward the end of the week).
Taking it easy can be so darned hard! I’m reading what I suspect is a not-great biography of Michael Bennett because it was here at the cottage and I’d finished the books I brought. Or maybe it is better than I think — It’s by the late Boston Globe theatre critic Kevin Kelly and he’s interviewed a slew of people for it. Sometimes it leans toward the sleazy with a lot of people with axes to grind, but then when you’re dealing with a super-ego, even if it’s pretty close to a genius one, people will have axes. If nothing else, it reads fast and if I’m still held down hopefully I can dig up another book here that’s worth the time. It gets to me, when I think of the huge stack at home I didn’t bring up, since we’re bringing home so much at the end of this trip! Ah well. First world problems. I’m not flooded. I have a roof and a house. I have antibiotics. Life could be far worse, especially this past week.
Claudia says
I remember Kevin Kelly from my days living in Boston.
How are you feeling, Jeanie?
Stay safe.
jeanie says
Still feeling pretty bumpy. I’m slowly improving but still very tired and wear out easy, lots of coughing. It’s so annoying and really beginning to take its toll, but I think we caught it early. I’m no stranger to lung disease but this one is definitely beyond my zone!
Claudia says
I’m so sorry you’re ill, Jeanie. Take care of yourself.
Linda says
Jeannie I appreciate your comment today- yes we have so many blessings to be thankful for, we just need to take time in the day to look.
This month we needed a new oil tank and my computer died..
Yikes!
I thank God we had the funds. Sur e savings went down but we just move forward and try to put more in the savings again.
Linda in Ky says
dear Claudia/Don — always glad to read your “adventures” — here in Ky was so hot with little or no rain, grass has dried up, trees turning brown not colorful BUT temps have come down to normal which is a good thing, still concern re fires. Our (Mr/me) big adventure this week is getting covid and flu shots–hoping it will be as easy as the other times. Your little girl is very pretty — love her outfit. hope you all stay safe/healthy
Claudia says
Our trees aren’t very colorful, either. That’s because of the drought.
We still have to get our boosters and flu shots.
Stay safe, Linda.

WHAT a beauty, that Harper…
About the snow blower: once you manage to find a manageable new one, can’t you put the older one on a selling site? If it’s in good working order it might bring in something.
Claudia says
We’ve already thought about that and will most likely try to sell it. We have to clean the carburetor first!
Stay safe, Petra.

Harper is dressed for fall!! Great colors. It’s another gloomy day up here in Mass. The weather was so perfect in CA last week…..
Claudia says
Gloomy here, too. Rather depressing!
Stay safe, Lynda.
Donnamae says
It is probably a good idea to get a smaller snowblower, and to start looking now…before you need it. I would think you’d be able to sell your old one or trade it in.
Harper looks fetching in that outfit…that purple hat really compliments her coloring.
It’s going to get colder later this week. Our first freeze is expected then….I’m not ready. But it’s been very fall like here….gorgeous days, beautiful skies. Makes me so thankful that our life is so relatively uncomplicated compared to those who are recovering from Ian.
Mowing tomorrow sounds like a great idea….I have to seed parts of our lawn tomorrow. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
It’s quite chilly here today – there’s a little wind which doesn’t help. We have color, but rather lackluster color because of the drought we had.
I hope it warms up a bit before I mow tomorrow.
Stay safe, Donnnamae!
kathy in iowa says
sounds like a good plan to get a different snowblower that will be easier to use. hope you can sell the other one, if you like. and that don’s hand gets better soon! how’s your back? hopefully also better, especially after several hours of travel recently.
your weather sounds familiar. while we could use some rain, at least it’s a bit cooler here … which i very much enjoy and appreciate.
glad you found a good book to read. have an agatha christie book here … seems perfect for fall.
i like harper’s style. :)
happy, safe monday to everyone.
kathy
Claudia says
Back is a bit sore from all the traveling, but it’s okay.
I like Harper’s style, too. All of my girls dress better than I do!
Stay safe, Kathy.
Chris K in WI says
Harper looks quite beautiful today!!!!! Such fun, It really always is something, isn’t it? Today our assessment came in on our house….built of logs in 1938 by my husband’s parents. The value of the land went up $49,000 and the house went up nearly $200,000. Unreal. The village had last been assessed in 2017. Small 3 bedroom 1 bath house. I am pretty darn sure we would not get close to $450,000 if we sold it. sigh….
We have had a few lovely days of weather. 71* today and tomorrow. Freeze by the end of the week with much cooler daytime temps. Had to tell you my daughter went to Love Labour’s Lost at APT in Spring Green last night, and called to tell me how wonderful it was. It sounded quite innovative! On Fri night she is going with another group of friends to see A Raisin in the Sun. She has gone several times this summer. She admitted that on Fri night, sitting outside in temps in the 30’s may not be quite as much “fun”.
Hope you both are doing well. May Don’s hand (& your back) continue to improve! We had the wee one here all day and are both rather exhausted. Take care.
Claudia says
Wow! That’s a big jump in your assessment!
So happy you got to spend some time with the wee one, Chris. They do require a lot of energy!
Stay safe.

You made me chuckle when you said “all of my girls dress better than I do”. Their clothes are almost as expensive, too. I’ve sent you a picture of Jesse in her first-day-of-school outfit. Harper looks very Autumnal in her burgundy pants and cozy green sweather. Very cute hat, too. She’s such a little sweetheart. Take gentle care. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
I’ll check my email, Elaine. Thanks so much for sending a picture!
I love Harper.
I also love the name Jessie. Perfect choice, Elaine.
