You know how you see some object in a store or on a blog and somewhere in your brain you register that you really like it? And then you see it over and over and you think, “Oh, well now I’m seeing it everywhere” and you (meaning me) dismiss it? That happens to me frequently. A few weeks ago I saw a photo somewhere in blogland of a mug/bottle rack filled with colorful cups and mugs. One of them was a large Anthropologie cup in a pattern that I loved – the very thing I had rejected so many times in the past.
Well, darn it! There it was back in my head again.
And I thought to myself, “There are very few things you can afford at Anthropologie, Claudia. But you can spring for a pretty cup or two.”
So, yesterday I escaped from downtown Hartford and drove to Anthropologie. I do love that store and we don’t have one near us back home. They sure know how to style and market their merchandise. It’s always a treat for the eyes.
Ah. Do you see why I love it? It’s oversized and holds a lot of coffee or tea. The little flower right under the Β top of the handle is such a sweet touch.
Well, I couldn’t help it. I got one in red, too. I had to, aqua and red are the colors of this blog.
They’re for me. I can safely assure you that Don will not be interested in them.
I had some herbal tea in the red cup yesterday afternoon. And I’m drinking my morning coffee from the aqua cup. They make me smile. And they sure beat the mug I’ve been using with the words “Spring Green General Store” stamped on the side. Nothing against Spring Green. It is a lovely little town and is yet another place where I lived for several weeks while on a coaching job.
There are flowers at the bottom of the cup – a lovely surprise.
I’ve also been feeling the siren call of crochet. It happens every year, like clockwork, as the temperature begins to drop.
So I stopped at Joann’s. This is the incredibly soft yarn I use on some of the scarves for the Etsy shop. It’s made of silk and bamboo.
Oh, and before I forget:
That white building you see on the left is the one that is reflected in the waters of the pond on Saturday’s post. If you look closely at those photos you’ll see bits of the building rearranged and repeated, creating that incredible design. I took this photo yesterday during my walk around the park.
I temporarily halted my reading of The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny to read Michael Connelly’s newest, The Black Box. It was on the New Fiction shelves at the library. I would have been tempted to buy it, so I ended up saving some money. I’m halfway through it and have to finish it soon because I’m leaving on Saturday. (And since I saved money, I feel I can validate the cup purchase. See how that works?)
Two of my former students won Emmy’s last night and they’ve both won them before. Dear Jim Parsons won his third Emmy for The Big Bang Theory. And Abraham Higginbotham won his second Emmy for Modern Family. He is a writer and producer on that show and he was onstage during the acceptance speech. I taught Abe at Boston University when he was a young man studying acting. (He’s a good actor, by the way.) Former students, now good friends; I am thrilled for both of these great guys.
Happy Monday.

Good morning Claudia….
How exciting to watch your friends pick up Emmy’s last night! I’ve only begun watching Big Bang Theory (highly recommended by my 77 year old mother!). We watched the Emmy’s until we could no longer watch, feeling the need to tune into our recording of Breaking Bad.
I love your new cups….I’m a real sucker for coffee/tea mugs and am coveting them for my own morning cuppa.
Have a great day and final week in Hartford!
lori
Claudia says
I’m going to watch Breaking Bad today, Lori. Can’t wait!
Shanna says
Love Anthropologie. Love the cups!
Claudia says
Thanks, Shanna. They are so pretty!
Missy says
LOVE Big Bang Theory…Great acting and super lines…Great Fall skies in your last two posts
Claudia says
I know – they are so beautiful! I never get tired of the beauty of the skies.
Paula says
This is the second time in a week I have seen those cups on blogs. I think it is a sign…
Congrats to your students – we watched Last Tango in Halifax and Foyle’s War last night – both great and quite diverting after the awful day we had.
Claudia says
What happened, Paula? I hope all is well.
Paula says
A friend of Phoebe’s died suddenly over the weekend. They are doing an autopsy to determine the cause of death. 28 years old. Such a tragedy for his family and friends.
Claudia says
Oh, I’m so very sorry! Losing someone so young is especially heartbreaking. My thoughts are with you.
Lorrie says
Such pretty cups, Claudia. And that luscious soft yarn. I love silk and bamboo, especially since I can’t wear anything woolen. How gratifying to see your former students receive prizes. Have a wonderful week.
Claudia says
You too, Lorrie!
Meredith says
I thought about you last night when Jim Parson’s won. I love the new cups and I think they were the perfect little pick me up for you, if I come visit I am claiming the red one.
hugs,
Mere
Claudia says
It’s a deal.
Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams says
My heart is drawn to that yarn…it’s simply lush and gorgeous…good for you to get a cup or two…we all need a treat occasionally.
Jen
Claudia says
Yes, we do!
Nancy Blue Moon says
What pretty mugs they are..Another big congratulations to Jim Parsons..he seems like such a sweetie..How good you must feel knowing that your influence helped these young people become the successes they are in life..Thank you my dear for guiding them along..so many young people need someone like you in their life..Hugs
Claudia says
He is a sweetheart.
Janet in Rochester says
So happy for Jim Parsons on his third [well-deserved] Emmy. It must require a lot of skill to make such a potentially-unlikable character like Sheldon into someone we all love. As a teacher myself, I know how proud you must be of both your Emmy-winners too. Have a great last week in Hartford! PS – I love bamboo as a fabric too. Stays soft after 100s of washings and great for the planet too!
Claudia says
Actually, I’ve had a couple other Emmy winners along the way. Lovely to see former students being applauded for their work.
Aunt Lou says
Ha! I knew there was some reason I wanted to watch at least part of the Emmys! Not only do I love Parsons’ work in Big Bang (what a cast! what a staff!) but there is this connection to you. Sorry I missed that.
Claudia says
Glad to hear you love his work, Lou. He’s a gem.
Dawn says
Love the cups, and that’s all I could afford there too:) I love Jim Parsons, I watch him every night over and over again in the Big Bang Theory. It’s my favorite show. Have you ever crocheted dish cloths from the bamboo yarn? I think bamboo is antibacterial so your dish rag never gets nasty?
Claudia says
I haven’t, but that’s a great idea, Dawn!
SueZK says
I am so glad to see I am not alone in the happiness a new coffee mug can bring. Those two are both very smile inducing. Enjoy them! You certainly deserve them.
Claudia says
Such a simple thing, but so pleasurable!
Debby Messner says
Love the mugs. Yes, you saved money, hah. Congrats on your former students. That must warm your heart.
I am trying to find a home for Henry. Do you know Nita Stacy…….only problem I think she lives in Texas. HE is adorable and I want him but I have too many furries right now. I still think he should go home with you. Maybe we could do a relay to get him to you.
Claudia says
I wouldn’t want to adopt him without Scout meeting him first. She has to be our first priority as she is 14 1/2 now. My nephew has expressed some interest. They already have a Pomeranian and a little 2 or 3 year old daughter and another child on the way, so I’m not sure if that would work out! We’ll find him a home. In the meantime, my friend Dory (who already has two dogs) will find it hard to say goodbye to him.
Kellianne says
I know EXACTLY what you mean! It also happens whenever I learn something new. All of a sudden, it will be everywhere and I feel so stupid…how on earth did I NOT KNOW that?
Example, I recently acquired a daguerreotype case. I unearthed it at a garage sale and hadn’t a clue what it was. I’m a vintage junkie, so it’s surprising I never heard of it. Now, I’m noticing the term all over the place! There’s even a PicMonkey action named for it! Guess if I didn’t fall asleep during Antiques Roadshow so often….
Love your new cups! I must stay away from anything Anthropologie…I WILL go broke.
I’m so thrilled about your former students!!! Two of my favorite comedies. Congrats!
Claudia says
Ha! I fall asleep during Antiques Roadshow, too. Don and I often find ourselves nodding off – must be because it’s so low key.
Cindy says
This is too funny. I have coveted those mugs for months now and every once in a while I will check and see if they are still available. It is too much that you got my mugs. I think I need to just cave in and get them also. They are cheery aren’t they?
Claudia says
Well, at least you know they’re still available, Cindy! They are wonderfully cheery!
Odette says
Those yarn colors are my sorority colors: wine and silver blue! (Pi Beta Phi)
Claudia says
Well, that’s cool, Odette!
Donnamae says
You know I thought of you last nite as soon as Jim Parson’s name was called…I thought you must be so happy for him! Love those cups…so pretty. Do you know why Spring Green is on them…just curious? ;)
Claudia says
No, Spring Green is on my red mug that I use at home. I bought it when I was working in Spring Green, WI a few years back. The coffee cups in my apt. there were the size of tea cups and they just didn’t work for a coffee drinker.
Laura says
Congratulations to your former students. I love those mugs. We now have an Anthropologie so I may have to pop over and get one. xo Laura
Claudia says
Go for it, Laura!
Kerrie says
Oh I loveeee the cup! Everything tastes better in a lovely cup! Thank you for taking time to visit me in blogland , you are the best!
Claudia says
You know, the coffee DOES taste better in that cup!
Kerrie says
Definitely tastes better-ha! Have a wonderful day!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Oh those mugs are so cute! I love the flowers at the bottom also. I’m trying not to buy books right now and visit the library more often. oh you know I love your crochet! Fall is in the air!
Claudia says
I visit the library a lot, Linda. I’ll miss the Hartford Library, which has a lot more on the shelves than our little local library.
Sondra says
How thrilling that your former students won last night Did you see the Jim Parsons episode on “Who Do You Think YOU are” that was on TLC(I think).
Lovely cups – I’ll have to look for them. I love to collect cups when I travel.
Claudia says
I did see that, Sondra. I could tell how moved he was to discover all that information about his ancestors.
Linda @ Itsy Bits And Pieces says
I LOVE your charming cups…it would be a pleasure drinking coffee from them! Thanks for stopping by, Claudia!
Claudia says
You are most welcome, Linda!
debi says
Love the cute cups Claudia! And your yarn colors are beautiful for fall.
Claudia says
Now I just have to get out my crochet hook!
Jeannie Marie & Company says
Modern Family is one of a few shows we DVR so it isn’t ever missed. How exciting you have a connection to them.
Now to expound on the joys of your coffee cups! I love them!!! I love having the same or similar patterned cup in several colors. Two is fine (grin) and how appropo that they are the color of your blog. May I also enjoy them as the color of Kmart? My husband managed stores for Kmart for 40 years as did his dad before him for 43 years. I always notice red and aqua combinations! You may not have seen but I do herald the joys of finding great mugs as a blog topic, so seeing your first photos was so fun! The curved out lip, the picture in the bottom both instill a flutter in my heart! So happy to have dropped by!
Claudia says
Gosh, should I buy more? I will if you force me to, Jeannie Marie! I forgot about aqua and red being the colors of Kmart! Yay for your husband and father-in-law. I always love going in Kmart!
