A Deluge

May 31, 2025 at 8:49 am by Claudia

Another photo of the rose. I’m absolutely sure it’s been pummeled by the deluge we’re receiving. Very heavy rain, wind, flooded culvert and street, sump pump continuously cycling on and off – it’s a crazy morning. In fact, the rain woke me up a bit before 5 am, which was too early for my taste!

This is a Nor’easter. The worst of it should be out of here by around 3 pm. In the meantime, it’s dark outside and the bird that was singing this morning has stopped. Perhaps she’s as tired of all the rain as I am.

We watched Field of Dreams  last night on TCM. It’s one of my favorite movies. Both of us were crying. It’s especially poignant now that James Earl Jones is gone. Everything about it is impeccably done. Pitch perfect. Tonight? Bringing Up Baby.

Green, green everywhere. Much of the green in this picture will transform into coneflowers, but there are hostas and day lilies, as well. The hosta at the top of the photo was here when we moved in. Everything else was planted by me.

Speaking of which, we will celebrate 20 years in this cottage at the end of August. That seems impossible! We moved in on August 31st, 2005. We had no cable and we couldn’t watch television so we had no idea that Hurricane Katrina was ravaging Louisiana. It was such a shock when we finally saw footage. We felt badly that we had no idea what was going on, but on the other hand, there’s something to be said for being off-grid and incommunicado. I could use a whole heck of a lot of that right now.

We mowed the corral and back forty yesterday. Today will be about chores that I put off when I can be outside. And maybe some basic repair work on the dollhouse.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Sorry to hear about all the rain. I guess we got quite a bit while we were gone, so we came home to green everywhere. Happy about that, too, since we had transplanted quite a bit before we left.

We went to the nursery yesterday to get plants for our pots. Thankful that we still had a great selection…I was afraid I wouldn’t have much to choose from. So it’s planting today, then a dinner with my son and DIL to thank them for all they did while we were gone….house, yard, and our cat.

I sort of caught up on your blog posts…loved the story about Phineas. Guess he likes your serenades. Sorry to hear about Etsy….so unfair. We had a terrific holiday…with my eldest son and DIL awe toured Edinburgh, took the train to the Highlands where we stayed for a week, and were able to visit that bookstore Leakey’s, in Inverness. We walked a lot, saw a lot, did a lot, and ate way too much. Fun time!

That rose is a stunner, and everything in your gardens are growing quite well. Enjoy your day! ;)

Sounds like you had a wonderful time! I love Edinburgh and Scotland. Welcome home.

Bringing Up Baby is one of our favorite movies. Cary Grant at his befuddled best while Katharine Hepburn acts her comedic talents off as the not-so-innocent schemer, but not scheming in an evil way. And being cat fans, we do love Baby!

    Happy Cottage Anniversary!

I hope the storm passes quickly. My friend in Baltimore received warnings that there is a small chance of a tornado. She’s going through massive thunderstorms.

It was a big storm. It’s starting to leave now, but it will be raining for a couple more hours.

      Thanks, Wendy.

      Stay safe.

best wishes and prayers for you all (including phileas and the birds, all people, creatures and plants) to get through the storm unscathed. and for weather more to your liking ahead.

i love “field of dreams”, too. have it on dvd so might watch it this weekend. or maybe “the goodbye girl” movie, the one with marsha mason and richard dreyfus … not the remake. need to do some other chores first, including bring over more light and/or sentimental things from my apartment. onward.

hope everyone has a lovely and safe weekend.

That’s a gorgeous rose! When my friend moved into her new house she gave me a small white rose bunch. It’s weathered the harsh winter winds for 30 years, sometimes almost dying. I’d love more roses.
I’m feeling ok again today. I think the 2 days of sleep were helpful.
Lots to do outside but it’s noon and already 30 degrees. Mike said to stay inside. An ice cream treat would be nice later. Much of Manitoba and Saskatchewan are burning. Cross our fingers for our alberta. The thought of evacuating is scary. I think I’ll just go the few homes down and sit in the river.
This is not a material world, but I know I’m a material girl

Hope the rain has stopped. Your rose is a beautiful colour. Hope you and Don stayed in nice and cozy safe from this crazy world. Enjoy your Sunday. Hugs, Elaine

We did. We had no choice! Although I did have to go out and clean out the culvert.

      Stay safe, Elaine.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
