I love my parents, but they can get real irritating.
I get up in the morning and Mom lets me out. Then when she’s finished with whatever it is she’s doing in the kitchen – she keeps saying the word coffee – she goes into the den and sits in her ‘blogging chair.’ Then I go in the tunnel and go back to sleep.
And she sits there with that darn thing she stares at. She calls it a laptop.
Then, after what seems like forever, Dad gets up. He always gets some water to drink.
Does he come in the den and sit, which would make things easier for me?
No.
He sits in the yellow chair in the living room.
So I have to go up the two stairs and be with him. I rarely go in his tunnel (I like my mom’s best) so I jump up on the sofa.
He pulls out his laptop. Yes, he’s got one, too.
What is it with these things? They remind me of that other thing I see them stare at when it’s night.
What do they see?
I don’t like having to split my time between my parents. It’s exhausting.
Then I have to get off the sofa, walk over to the french doors and stare at my mother until she feels my eyes boring a hole into her. Then she gets up and gets me breakfast.
After all of that, I’m really tired and I have to decide whether to hang out with Dad or Mom.
I go back and forth.
And so it goes on throughout the day.
My favorite time is when I stare at Mom until she comes into the kitchen and cuts up some carrots for me. This is usually around 5 o’clock.
And then I stare at my Dad and even have to bark at him a few times until he finally starts dinner. (Why do I have to do this every day? Doesn’t he understand my schedule?) Then I watch every move he makes and sometimes food falls to the floor and I am happy.
Then comes the night, when we all sit together on the den sofa. Mom always complains that I take up ¾ of it and she and Dad are squished together at one end.
Oh don’t get me wrong. Sometimes they can be fun. Mom chases me around the room. She will ‘pounce’ with me. And they can both get real silly. They sing a lot and sometimes we all dance around the room. And Mom did take me on that adventure to Hartford.
But it’s hard running this house. I have to herd them a lot. I am responsible for them and I have to make sure I spend time with them both. And what do I do when Mom goes upstairs to her studio? I don’t go up the stairs anymore, so I have to plant myself at the bottom of the stairs and wait for her. Or I pace. Or I make little whiney noises and she tells me to stop. I keep doing it until she gives up and comes downstairs.
The things I have to do.
By the way, it’s that time of year that I dread – when Mom tells me she’s going to take a picture of me in some bunny ears she has. Again. She seems to get a real kick out of it. And she’ll put that darned picture on her blog. I have no say in the matter.
Yesterday she put one of Dad’s winter hats on me and made Dad look at me. Then they laughed.
They’re nuts.
Since I’ve taken over the blog today, here are some more of Mom’s egg cups:
She’s moved on to the bunny rabbit egg cups. (I see bunny rabbits outside and I bark at them. They run away.)
Left: a sort of crazy looking bunny rabbit.
Center: Two bunnies holding up an egg. (Mom really loves this one.)
Right: Another little bunny in an orange jacket and blue pants – he’s peeking around the side of the egg.
What’s with all the bunnies?
Nice talking to you again.
P.S. – Mom says to tell you that her post about Fabric Eggs and Egg Cups was featured in BlogHer‘s DIY Section.

Thank you, Leslie. You get how hard my life is.

Hi from Rhody and Arthur! Rhody says: you bark at rabbits? I find it more effective to stand on the sill, bark, whine, claw at the glass, act generally nuts! It’s a lot of fun! And your mom’s egg cups are pretty cool.
Claudia says
I bark at them and they run!

Hello Scout, You are so right. Human’s can be frustrating. But here we have them outnumbered and well trained.
Yup….we trained them….well actually Niki trained them. She was great but she died. I miss her.
Anyway….it’s good you trained your mom to cut up carrots. You need good eyesight so you can see the bunnies.
It would be great if you could visit us. But that probably won’t ever happen so we’ll just meet here every now and then.
Your Friend,
Dutch Boy
P.S. Shadie, Tucker, Goldie and Boz said hello too.

Thank you, Dutch Boy!

Dear Scout: It IS so hard taking care of mom and dad. Right now I am SO SAD. My dad went to Italy for two weeks cause his aunt is going to be 100 on Sunday. I miss him soooo much. Even my first time sleeping on the bed did not help. Mom took me to work with her once and we’ve visited the family some, but I still come home and he’s not there. Mom will take me to work again on Monday, and she’ll let me go to the airport with her to pick him up Tuesday….But I’m sighing til then….
Doggy kisses, Miss Bella
Claudia says
It’s hard Miss Bella. My dad is going away to Prague for 9 days. Then my mom is going away for 5 weeks. I hate it.

Scout, I can tell you have a hard life there with your Mom and Dad. But it seems you are maintaining some semblance of control, and that’s good. Try to be patient with them, they’re only humans you know. Always good to hear from you, stay in touch and enjoy a few good naps today. Mary
Claudia says
I try to be patient, Mary, but it’s hard!

Scout, I know just how you feel! Sometimes I wish those flat things had never been invented – my mom and dad spend entirely too much time on them too! But, they do feed me well and take me for lots of walks so I guess I can’t complain too much. However, I did hear the word ” bath” today at breakfast, so I think I better start hunting a hidey hole. Good to visit with you Scout.
Bella
Claudia says
Bella, that is so weird – my mom mentioned bath yesterday! I don’t like that.

Scout, you are so dedicated to taking care of your humans and keeping that house running like a well-oiled machine. You are most impressive. Humans are funny creatures, but it is good of you to keep the pair.
Thank you for sharing your mom’s bunny egg cups, they are wonderful!!! btw, we have jack rabbits here, but I think they would run if you barked at them. Your bark means business!!!

Dear Scout,
Could you please tell your mother that I just about have the shakes from the bad case of easter egg cup envy I have over here!
I am handing the keyboard over to George and Gracie, so they can tell you that their days are not a bed of biscuits either.
Woof woof Scout!
Oh boy, can we ever relate! Our mommy wakes up cranky every morning (since she hasn’t slept since November of 1998, she says!). We have to wait until she shakes off her crabby appletons to get our breakfast. She does make a good breakfast though.
She doesn’t understand us, we’re very zen. She doesn’t understand the nuances of smelling each blade of grass for long drawn out moments. She becomes unglued and barks at us. We don’t have anything in common. She doesn’t enjoy playing keep-away with the ball – c’mon! how can she not love it?!
You’re not alone.
Keep in touch!
George and Gracie
Claudia says
George and Gracie, mom said to tell you that she loves your names.

Dear Scout,
whisper whisper they are our undercover witness protection plan names the rescue gave us (we came from a sad place) … we rather like them too but pretend to not hear them when mommy uses them.

I was a rescue too. But they named me Smiley. Cause I smile a lot. Mom and Dad changed it to Scout.

That was a hoot.. or should I say a bark? My dog does very similar things. Buddy the Cairn Terrier – he’s either on my lap or sitting by his dad in our side by side recliners. Rarely does he lay in his bed by the fire. If there is a beam of sunlight, you can find him napping in it. Love my fur kid. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Right now I’m waiting on my mom to make me my second meal of the day. She says not ’til 3:30 pm. But I want it NOW.

Annette Tracy says
Hi Scout, it’s Ella here I was just adopted by Annette and Megan. Somebody gave me up after 5 years, and now I’m so happy here. They have about 1 1/2 acres and it’s all fenced, and boy, do I love it. I get to run and run. And did I say run? Plus I dig holes to my hearts content! It’s kinda rural here so Mom doesn’t care. We have bunnies here, but I’ve never caught one. The squirrels are lots of fun too. There’s 2 more dogs that live here and 2 cats, but I’m bad and I chase the cats! You’re so right, though about the weird things humans do. Megan named me after a musician because she’s a violinist. So now my new name is Ella “Fitzgerald” and I’ve learned to love it. I’m glad you’ve got your mom and dad under control. I’ve got some more work to do on that! Hope you write more later, Arf, Arf, Ella “Fitzgerald”
Linda @ A La Carte says
Oh Scout, It is a hard job being responsible for your parents, but you do a great job! Can’t wait to see the bunny ears…Sorry!

Dear Scout,
Sigh. I kow my dogs would understand. Especially the little Dachs Hund who has to endure costumes and photoshoots all in the name of “likes, ” awes, and blog posts. Then back to napping. Such a rough life.

Scout, I’m going to read this to Abby, because she is sick of me sitting in front of the computer, and starts barking at me now if I do it for more than 30 minutes at a time! Thanks for showing us your mom’s egg cups, they’re DARLING.

Scout, you have a hard life — I sympathize with you. I’m a kitty so I can nap for hours on end and have to endure it when mommy wakes me up to play. I like birdie watching best, and watching the outside kitties. And sometimes mommy lets me ‘pooter write too! And I like to lay on that flat thing — she calls it a keyboard but I don’t see any keys…. Wait! I think I hear her yelling “Foodies!”

Scout your post sounds very much like our Candy’s day, except her Daddy gets up early and leaves her in bed with me until I get up about 7:30. Then it’s like yours. She has to tell us when it’s time to start supper and always goes in the kitchen while her daddy cuts salad and spills stuff too.
Funny, all dogs have to manage the entire household.
