First up: Frances McDormand’s acceptance speech was frigging amazing. I’ve always admired her guts and honesty and the way she lives her life. (By the way, she’s had no work done and usually doesn’t wear makeup as she navigates the streets of Manhattan.) Anyway, that speech, if you haven’t seen it, is well worth watching.
Of course, I ended up watching the entire broadcast. Who was I kidding?
I ran some errands yesterday and stopped at Home Goods, where I bought new bathroom rugs (whoo hoo!) and a cookie jar (even though I’m cutting out sweets) and this tea kettle (even though I already have one.)
I mean, come on! I had to bring it home.
My other tea kettle is pretty, but it’s old and has taken quite a battering over the years. I’m hanging on to it, however. Maybe I’ll pick a kettle according to my mood on any given day. Hmmm.
Pretty, don’t you think?
I also cleaned Stella this weekend. We’re still discovering each other, Stella and I. I found all sorts of nooks and crannies that needed attention. But I love doing that – at least with Stella. I’m not so great with other parts of the house.
We have another storm headed our way on Wednesday. So far, I’m hearing it might bring 6 inches or more. Crap.
This winter has been a major pain in the tush and I am more than ready to move on. The only thing worse would be if snow kept me from being in Manhattan for Opening Night. But, if it was in the picture, I’d just head in early. Ain’t no snow keepin’ me from Opening Night!
Two monstera leaves slowly unfurling. Thank you, plants, for keeping me sane this winter. I attribute my sanity to your beauty and to the pleasure of tending to your needs.
Happy Monday.

I love your new tea kettle and I see why you had to have it! Isn’t it fun sometimes to just wander around Home Goods and find those things that we really don’t need? It can make your day!
Claudia says
It made mine, Cathy!

I admire the women who don’t get rid of their wrinkles. I saw a piece on CBS Sunday morning with Glenda Jackson. She certainly has had nothing done and I love her for it.
Claudia says
Don was working in the same building as Glenda Jackson recently. He said she looks her age, and that’s a good thing! Love that she is who she is.
kathy says
the tea kettle, stella and the yellow walls all look so very pretty together. :)
great plant-tending, too, claudia!
good plan to watch the weather/get to nyc ahead of any storm so you can enjoy opening night! hopefully there’s no storm. please tell don that i enjoyed “etm” and that he did a great job, got many laughs! and if you meet jimmy, please tell him an unofficial reeferette is happy and grateful that he’s coming back to des moines! heehee.
will have to search for that acceptance speech online. loved her in “fargo” … and that she has chosen to age naturally. if i had to see my (60-years-old in two weeks) face ten feet tall on a movie screen, i’d hope i’d make that same choice.
happy monday!

Claudia says
I hope I get to meet him on Opening Night! I’ve seen him in person, but there hasn’t been an opportunity to meet him.
McDormand is, as my husband said, ‘fierce!’
kathy says
oh, i hope you and jimmy get to meet!
i’ve seen jimmy many, many times in many states and at this point would be fine being in the cheaper seats, but still i keep trying … someday i want to be front row center (17th row center is the best so far)!
how’s the shopping going for an outfit for opening night? best wishes on that!
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
I haven’t shopped yet and now we’re getting a major winter storm tomorrow. Not sure when I’m going to have time to shop!
Tammy S Asad says
That tea kettle is definitely your color. I’ve seen lots of snippets from the Oscars on YouTube and did see her speech. My Albany boy watched Three Billboards some time back and recommended it. I was finally able to watch it on our recent flight to Sri Lanka and thought it was really good. Unfortunately, all the cussing was censored and dubbed with nicer words that just didn’t fit the scenes. :/
Claudia says
She was powerful!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
The new kettle brings out that same color that is in the “shaker of salt”. So pretty!! I do love my Home Goods time. So many things to touch and look at. I don’t think I have ever made a trip there without bringing something home. And their prices are so good that I never feel guilty about it, either!!
We did watch last night and her speech was just great. Loved her getting all the women up and on their feet. I was glad to (finally) see some good signs of diversity in the evening. Miles to go.
We have winter weather coming our way tonight into tomorrow. 3-6 inches. Praying for the 3, but the predicted 50 mph winds will make a disaster out of even just a couple. ugh. Hope the winds whip it in a different direction and lets you escape it. Have a good Monday.
Claudia says
Same thing here on Wednesday – I’m seeing anywhere from 3 to 8 inches, and that could change as it’s two days off right now.
Kay says
Your new tea pot looks so pretty sitting on Stella. I was in Home Goods this weekend too. Even stopped to look at a tea pot. I too have one so other things went home with me. As Chris says above, more snow is coming for WI. The wind is already gusting in downtown Milwaukee. Some of our worst snowstorms come in March, even April. C’mon, Spring!!
Claudia says
Same thing here. Oh Spring, please come!
Tana says
Kettles. Yes, kettles. Maybe I should count mine and you would feel better. I have two small ones that sit in the entryway with silk flowers. A copper one on the wood stove, and a number on a shelf in our wine cellar. We don’t drink so the wine cellar holds can-goods and kettles. One looks like an apple and one a cow, and one just has beautiful flowers. Hope that makes you feel better for having two. Your new one is beautiful and you certainly needed to dress up Stella. She may need one for Fall/Thanksgiving and one for Christmas. I, of course, have that covered too.
Claudia says
I only have so much space to store things – no usable basement or attic. So I think I’m going to have to keep it at two!
Janet in Rochester says
Very pretty teakettle. Provides a nice little burst of color in your kitchen. Tiffany blue – perfect choice to use with that yellow. So much fun to buy something you don’t need but just want once in a while, isn’t it? As a child of Depression children, I still find myself asking “Do I really NEED this?” every time I ponder a purchase. Every time. And nearly every time, it’s NOT something I really need. So I try to be good. But every once in a while I think we all need to make a just-plain-fun purchase – so good for you, Claudia! Maybe you can switch out your teakettles seasonally? The new one for Spring & Summer – the other one for Fall & Winter. PS – I like your little red “retro” clock too. Or is it a timer? Have a great week! Peace.

Love that new tea pot Claudia!…Perfect color for you!…Since everybody is telling you about their pots I have one that looks like a black and white cat…his tail is the handle and a little white bird sits on top of the spout and whistles when the water gets hot!…I know that we are expecting more snow but I don’t have any details yet!..Sigh…
Claudia says
Sounds very cute! NO MORE SNOW! (I say this knowing it will snow whether I want it to or not.)

LOVED McDormand’s speech! I saw it live as I clicked over just in time to see it. she is a little tour de force! I admire her on many fronts.
I watched an hour episode of a series on the Hallmark Channel that I love… When Calls the Heart. set in Canada in the late 1800’s. I suppose it’s corny but I enjoy it just the same… so I missed a lot of the Oscars.
you could put your old teapot on that beautiful old wooden table in the kitchen with fresh flowers in it … it would make a beautiful vase!
sorry about the new storm. maybe some little miracle will make it go away.
I know. “yeah. right!”
Claudia says
There’s too many things on that table already, Tammy! No room!
Vicki says
Of course you had to buy that kettle; it’s such a pretty spot of color on Stella; perfect!
Claudia says
Thanks, Vicki!
annette says
Hi,Claudia! I think that we were sisters in another life! I can never pass up a cute tea kettle and your new one is perfect for Stella.Yes, Frances Mc D. came through as never before. She is a national treasure in my book. xo Annette in CA
Claudia says
She is indeed, Annette!
Marilyn says
The color of that tea pot is gorgeous. The weather said we may receive 5 to 10 inches of snow with rain. I hope more rain than snow. . Not looking forward to that
Claudia says
8 – 16 inches predicted here – with no rain!
Wendy T says
I only watched the last bits of Oscars, but caught McDormand’s speech. Electrifying! How she got all those women to stand up, and then said the women will give the studios a call within the next couple of days to discuss their projects! Woo hoo! The power to entertain without sacrificing oneself. Fierce, indeed. I went to Home Goods yesterday, Claudia…my first time. Bought a lampshade I’ve been needing for the loveliest ugly table lamp (enameled mosaic of butterflies) I saved from my late Uncle’s home. It’s just what the lamp needed, plus a polishing of the brass parts, which I will do as soon as I buy the polish, I love the color of your new kettle. When you aren’t using the other kettle, you can put a jar in it, filled with water, and use it to hold flowers.
Wendy T says
Oh, addendum….I was at REI today to look around…found a shirt I liked and bought it, but I was very aware of older women who were working there, as well as shopping there, all wearing REI-type attire, including a woman in her 70’s who still had her bike helmet on. Not only did I love seeing active seniors, but I loved that my daughter was exposed to them.
Claudia says
Love that!
Claudia says
Home Goods is always fun, Wendy. And so reasonably priced!
Donnamae says
Pretty teapot…it goes so well with that salt shaker pic. I think we all need to treat ourselves once in a while. Yes…a pox on winter….it is snowing to beat the band…high winds… very blizzard like. I’m so ready for spring! ;)
Claudia says
I am over this winter. And we’re getting a winter storm on Wednesday, just 5 days after the nor-easter on Friday.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I seemed to have missed reading this post so I’m a day late. Yesterday was a busy day and I didn’t get my usual coffee and blog time. So, yes I love that teapot, such a pretty color. I earned a $25 gift card to Home Goods and I’m going to go and just buy something FUN!!! I keep looking for a Rae Dunn mug but my Home Goods hasn’t had any in ages. Oh well, they have plenty of other things I can enjoy. I hate to shop for clothes anymore but hope when you do get out you find the right dress. Opening Night! So exciting. Frances McDormand is a National Treasure. I love her face, a real face and she is so powerful in her realness (if that makes sense). Hope the snow isn’t as bad as expected. Big Hugs!
Claudia says
My Home Goods had racks and racks of Rae Dunn this week. I’ve never seen so much. There’s a lot of Easter Rae Dunn as well. So yours might have more than you expect.
