A Quick Visit

April 10, 2018 at 8:49 am by Claudia

A quick post today, as I have to take Don to the bus station. We’ve had a lovely time – less than 24 hours – but much, much needed for both of us. I feel much more grounded when we reconnect. So does he. You know, he’s working awfully hard; eight shows a week, up and down several flights of stairs at the theater each day (and I’ve gone up and down them myself – I don’t know if I could do it every day.) Same with the apartment, which is a fourth floor walk-up. Last week, there was an additional rehearsal, so he actually did nine  shows. He’s tired. I’m so proud of him. I know that it’s hard work.

I think I’ll go visit him this next time – it’s my turn.

Believe it or not, we’re supposed to get some snow this morning. It will be minor, very minor, but come on! It’s April 10th. This winter weather cannot exit quickly enough. I am ready to start working outside!

We watched Part 1 of the new documentary, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, on HBO last night. It’s directed by Judd Apatow and it’s truly excellent. Don knew and worked with Garry, who was a great guy, but fascinatingly complex. We’ll watch Part 2 next time he’s home. I recommend it highly.

Okay my friends. More tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday.

Claudia, So glad you had time with your sweetheart Don. It must be rough to keep doing the same thing day after day…but I do realize that is how a play works. :):) Then to not be with your family and your own things at home, that has to add to the list. I know you are proud of your man…as he is of you, as you have been keeping the home fires burning. Oh yes, I am dying to get outside in the yard and get things ready for a warmer season(If we get one). LOL. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

I know the visit was good for both you and Don. It is hard what he does, but of course he loves it. More snow?? Oh my goodness. It’s been cold (well cold for Ga in April) and rainy but I think we might get some sunshine today. Tomorrow is Mom’s 2nd cataract surgery. The surgery is making a big difference for sure. Must get going as I’ve lots to do today. Hugs!

I had recorded the Zen Diaries but haven’t watched it yet; I like a lot of the stuff Judd Apatow does although I don’t know a whole lot about Garry Shandling although of course his death was untimely and he was so popular/mourned (and certainly I’d seen him on the late-night chat shows over the many years). I haven’t gotten HBO for very long in terms of numbers of years (wasn’t Shandling’s show an HBO one? [maybe not]) and I’m getting rid of premium cable soon (for the budget); just waiting for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony which will be televised in, I think, early May (Moody Blues? I know Bon Jovi is also one of the bands honored).

We’re terribly hot in my area of SoCalif/mid-to-high 90s yesterday; scorching. The devil-wind Santa Anas are blowing, starting up wild again in this last half hour in full sun (although they blew to a lesser degree all night). Taking a toll on my roses although it’ll help the veggies.

I’m really tired because my husband’s been out of state on business and I can’t get any rest because the dog stays on high alert all night when he’s gone, barking at every sound and of course the wind doesn’t help. Wind makes her restless, just like me. As I said, since the December wildfire, wind to me, now, feels like a warning and makes me feel uneasy. Our hills were turning green but heat like this will turn them to straw before long, especially if we get no more rain.

Wonderful that you got in a short visit with Don. I could never handle stairs and I know you’ve even got them in your cottage. Good aerobics, though! As long as you’ve got good hips and knees. Even though it’s tiring, maybe it’s a sort of exercise that helps Don onstage every day since he has to be ‘physical’ and move around a lot in the production.

You know, I guess it’s our age. By now in the 7th decade of life, the old muscles/joints/bones for a lot of us are showing some wear & tear. And his are getting a lot of abuse. Is he taking anything like ibuprofen or just toughing it out? My husband has taken too much prescription-strength ibuprofen (800mg) for years (broken back/clavicle/feet when he was a 20-something/accident on the job) and the doctor is cutting back on it now because there are warnings about it. (Gosh, I can remember when I took 600mg ibuprofen, 3X/day, for two years and the doctor who prescribed it said nothing of any dangers; this was pre-internet or I probably would have been googling side effects.) I remember when they black-boxed Celebrex which was a godsend to my mom and her rheumatoid arthritis (auto-immune disease), so it gets to where options start running out for pain relief and inflammation-reducers. I keep telling my husband he could start with improving his diet and maybe trying some supplements but, you know, he won’t even use a ice pack although he does take a long, hot shower every morning or else he can hardly get around.

He takes ibuprofen when needed and they have a physical therapist that comes in two times a week to work on everyone. That helps.

Oh, that’s wonderful. I think it was Bob Hope (who knows where I read this stuff?) that had a daily massage. I also remember reading about how difficult it was for actor Brad Cooper to play ‘The Elephant Man’ on Broadway because he had to put his body thru such contortions to play the disfigured character without prosthetics.

Vicky, your husband must ice! My PT kept after me so I became more regular and it really paid off. It will change his life, but must be regular.

Thanks for the advice about the ice. I’ll tell him. It just can’t be random; have to keep at it! Make it part of a routine. I have a PT, too, and he bends over a lot, working with patients, plus he’s in his late 60s now, and he was in a car accident. So his phrase is, “Ice is nice.” And the first thing he does every evening when he gets home from work is sit in his recliner (in a comfy position) with an ice pack at his low back. I’d forgotten this!

Musicals generally have a PT on hand because the dancers need it with all that they do during the course of a week of shows.

When’s the next reunion, Claudia? I’ve been putting off yard work. First, I have to tidy the office as I’m donating the sofa bed that’s in there and the movers won’t be able to get it out if I don’t clear up.

If it helps at all, despite the sun and warmth, we are scheduled to get snow today, tonight and tomorrow and again on Monday …. I think Spring may just skip us all together and Summer will show up instead!

Glad you and Don had a visit, as short as it was. And glad the show is going well, even though it’s a tiring schedule. Looking forward to reading about your next visit to the big City!

So glad you were able to be together and reboot. I keep thinking once we are finally able to get outside, your days will surely go by more quickly. But when the mowing starts….. is there anyone you can hire to help with that? I know how grueling that job can be. Most especially in the heat. We had about 1.5 inches of snow yesterday morning, but it was melted by about noon. Hope that is the case for you, as well.

Such a pretty picture today, Claudia! How is the reading coming? I am kind of on pins and needles today after yesterday’s news. It is such a guessing game wondering what is going on in that lame brain. Have a good Tuesday!

It is grueling but I sort of love mowing. I just have to space it out over a few days. Hiring someone is problematical since our property is very uneven and hilly and Don and I know exactly how to deal with it.

Still having trouble concentrating as to reading but I did finish that book, which made me happy. Right now, I’m all about the news, just like you!

Yes…your visit was all too short…but I’m hopeful it recharged you both. That pic of your living area is gorgeous. It’s very calming…your cottage must be the perfect place to seek refuge. I’m a little on edge these last couple of days…due to him that shall not be named. I can’t seem to get in the groove to do much of anything. I just wish spring would get here. I think that may help to get me out of my funk! ;)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
