A Quick Visit and a Gift

April 29, 2013 at 8:44 am by Claudia

How can everything be overgrown here in the one week that I’ve been gone?

It’s as if the grass and the weeds shouted, “Hey, she’s gone, let’s go crazy!” Yesterday, Don mowed most of the lawn that is right in front of the house and it was so long that the lawnmower kept stalling. That leaves a whole heck of a lot of grass yet to mow and it’s looking like rain today. Don considers the front lawn the only area that needs to be mowed. That leaves out the grassy area behind the kitchen and the whole back forty. We have this argument every year. Like clockwork. I insist it needs to be kept under control because it’s prettier that way, plus, there are less ticks if the grass is mowed. If you remember, I’ve had too many experiences in the past where I had to clean up overgrown areas that Don ignored while I was away. Sigh. I have to get some mowing in before I leave for Hartford.

I let Scout out this morning, walked outside and immediately came in and started to charge the battery for the weed whacker. I’ll be decimating some weeds later today. The garden, though, is filling in nicely – that makes me happy. Still only blooms on the daffodils, but the tulips are about to open. I imagine that as soon as I leave, blooms will burst forth everywhere.

There was a box waiting for me. It arrived in the mail when I was gone. I knew it was from Judy, who just might be the sweetest, most thoughtful person in the world. It was from One Kings Lane. You can bet I opened it immediately. Well, not quite immediately, I showered sleepy Scout with hugs and kisses first.

Oh my goodness. Could these be any more adorable? Four egg cups that come with the eternal question: What came first, the chicken or the egg? They are designed by Keith Brymer Jones, who is a British ceramic designer.

I’m thrilled. What a marvelous addition these make to my collection!

Judy, you are the best! Thank you. I love getting surprises in the mail. These made my day. Week. Month.

Don has been taking Scout for rides in the car every day. And walks. She’s been on several adventures. What a good daddy he is! I can see where this is going: Don will be the fun, exciting parent, while I will be the medicine giver, food deliverer, bath giver, toenail clipper, sort of boring but necessary parent. Ah well.

Happy Monday.

Nice way to spend your weekend off — mowing and weed whacking! And I guess so it is with dogs and with children, Mom is the caregiver and Dad is “the fun one.” Wishing you a safe return to Hartford and an exciting week in the theater!

Enjoy you your visit home! We have, can you believe it, more snow today. But we raked our now green grass on the weekend and marveled at the little green shoots coming up in the garden. Spring was almost here!!

What great egg cups. Love the design. :)

Oh such cute egg cups! That was a very thoughtful gift. It’s amazing how fast those weeds show up isn’t it? It seems to be a never ending battle here too. I’m sure Scout is so happy to see you that he won’t care what you do to him. Dogs are like that. Pure love.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

I had to laugh at the parenting duties…parenting is parenting! Well, with all the rain we’ve had lately, there is the inevitable mowing…good luck with that debate! What a sweet friend you have…darling egg cups! ;)

How sweet of Judy..they are adorable and comical..Men can be so stubborn about things like that…fortunately we have a riding mower as we have a huge lawn behind us plus what is in front and at the sides..my daffodils at the edge of the woods are slowly fading but the tulips are in full bloom and gorgeous..I so wish the sun would shine for both of us..They say it will on Wednesday here..I’m hoping they are right about that..

We have a huge lawn, too, but no riding mower. It’s just us – pushing a lawnmower all over the place.

Well I don’t know what’s worse, a spouse that doesn’t get the weeds or one that thinks that every living plant IS a weed when weed whacking? :)

That was sweet of Judy – she seems like such a caring person. Those will be make lovely additions to your collection. Very cute!

My husband and I argue about the yard as well. You don’t want to get lyme’s disease.
Don being the spoiling parent is too funny.
Our daffies came out early but didn’t do well. The tulips just came out and are beautiful. Yep, yours will ce out when you leave.
Love those egg cups. Judy is a sweetie.

Ack! Our yard is making a strong argument for a calf or a goat!
Every year it is the same thing…I like to see the weeds away from the tree trunks…The Honey just mows out away from the trees. Enough to knock it all down until next week or so. The weed whacker (Me!) is long over due…but the actual machine is in need of some repairs. We put a new kit on it and replaced all the parts…but it just won’t crank.
Which brings out the other argument… He wants a battery operated one. Do you like yours? I prefer gas powered…but then, a calf would be ideal.
I like your pretty egg cups…so special.
As for Scout the pampered pooch…she has the best of both worlds… Two parents with very different ideas of CARE… but both important for a well rounded upbringing!

    Enjoy!

We have been doing household stuff, too, and we have to divide and conquer. Mr. Magpie and I don’t work very well together on projects like this. LOL

I know it was fun getting to see Don and Scout, and I’m sorry things will bud out before you get to see them bloom. Maybe there will be some goodness left on your next break.

    Those egg cups??? Darling!

Sending you love across the miles…

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
