Goodness, it rained all night long and it’s still raining! We have a flash flood watch up for this area of the Hudson Valley. We’re always fine, as our little cottage sits well above the river across the street. Everything is getting greener and greener – and it isΒ April – so showers are welcome.
A bit of an egg cup potpourri today.
On the left: a wooden egg cup with a porcelain top given to me by my mom, Devon Ware – a gift from a fellow blogger who was born in Devon (the other side says “Laid Today,”) an egg cup from Prague – a gift from Don, a flowery egg cup found at the flea market in Paris, a lustreware bear egg cup – a gift from my friends Lynne and Sean, and a Cottage Ware egg cup from England.
There are four more that I’ll share tomorrow. I’m determined to because I love them but often forget to show them because they’re on display in the kitchen.
And…drum roll…here they are:
The gang’s all here!
That’s Bashful to the left of Snow White – I couldn’t get his name in the shot.
Oh heavens. I love them!
I love all my egg cups, but I have to admit I have favorites. Some of the figural egg cups that I collected at the beginning of this adventure are now almost impossible to find. I even remember the bidding wars that I got into in order to nab them! We lived in a rental cottage on the other side of the Hudson River when we first moved East. I started collecting in 2002. I would sometimes sneak out of bed in the middle of the night to go into the next room to use the computer to bid on an egg cup. It was the early days of eBay and there was no PayPal, so I would send money orders to the sellers. After receipt, they would put the egg cup in the mail, resulting in a long wait until the package was in my hands.
It was awfully fun.
I think the first egg cup in the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs series that I bought was Doc. I’ll have to go back and check. And Doc was my only Dwarf for several years. Grumpy or Bashful next? I’m not sure. That will be a good mini-project: putting a chronology together. And of course, I can figure it out by consulting this blog, which I often do when I want to remember what I was doing or buying or planting. Just checked: the second dwarf was Dopey!
We watched The Quiet Man Β last night. Believe it or not, it’s the first time we’ve seen it. What a wonderful movie. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara are terrific, but my favorites are Barry Fitzgerald and Victor McLaglen. Certain elements of the plot – the woman as “property,” John Wayne dragging Maureen O’Hara through endless fields despite her repeatedly stumbling in the grass – wouldn’t fly today. I cringed a bit as I watched those scenes. But it was filmed in 1952; another time, another era. (I should know, it’s the year of my birth!)
I hope you’re having a lovely holiday weekend.
Happy Saturday.

I love that Snow White is hugging herself as if to say, “Sleepy you are with us at last.”

All her boys are home, Brenda! Thanks!

I was waiting for the shot of the dwarfs and Snow White together. Thanks for the smile today!

My daughter is a Snow White fan, so I showed her these egg cups. She’s impressed you had to wait this long to complete the collection. Do you know when these were made, Claudia? You may have written it in one of your blogs, but I don’t remember.
Claudia says
1937 – Walt Disney Enterprises.
Wendy T says
The Disney merchandise from decades ago is so much better than the majority of Disney merchandise nowadays. Too much plastic and overseas production, and an overflooding of the market. I know there are quality items too but they are so expensive.
Claudia says
Sort of the norm across the board nowadays!

Oh, what a fun photo ~~ the gang’s all here!!
Still cooking today, but it is a pretty day, so windows are opened. Enjoy your day!
Claudia says
Enjoy your Easter preparations, Chris!

Hail, hail, the gang’s all here! I loved seeing that photo, less because of the cups (which are darling!) but more because of the journey they represent and the joy they bring.
Lovely wishes for a beautiful Easter weekend.

Thanks so much, Jeanie!

You’d never seen “The Quiet Man” – ??? Then I’m SO glad you finally did. “The Quiet Man” is practically part of our family’s zeitgeist. It was my father’s favorite movie of all time – and that’s saying something [Dad was a huge movie buff from childhood]. John Wayne was his fave actor too. Not to mention his major “case’ [Dad’s word] on Maureen O’Hara, something he’d had since his teens. Most of us in the immediate family could lip-synch this movie, we’ve seen it THAT often. We’ve been known to describe people to others as different characters in the movie. “Oh, that guy, he’s a [insert movie character’s name]…..” etc. After a lot of searching I found a CD of the soundtrack & gave it to Dad on one of his last birthdays which turned out to be fortuitous, because Dad had told Mom, decades ago when they were watching TQM, that he wanted a particular tune from the movie played at his funeral. On the soundtrack, it’s tagged as “My Mother” – an exquisite Irish melody played mostly with a violin. And the perfect choice for Dad. So glad we were able to do that for him. Now I sit & bawl like a baby through at least half the movie when it’s on – LOL. Oh well, quite a trip down Memory Lane for me. Very glad you got to see it. I predict you’ll watch it again & again when it’s on. Have a quiet & peaceful Easter! π°

Probably didn’t see it because I’m not a fan of John Wayne in his later roles. Stagecoach? Yes. He’s wonderful – he hasn’t yet become the guy that so many comedians did imitations of. Don feels the same way. But we’re glad we watched it – especially for O’Hara and the other two character actors I mentioned. I still say that Wayne was at his best in Stagecoach, The Searchers, & Red River. Something – the role, the script, the director – grounded him and all the acquired Wayne-isms disappeared. He does wonderful work in each of those movies.

Not to be forgotten…that lustreware bear is adorable. But…the real hit here is the gang! Oh…so wonderful together! I was reading the comments…they came out in 1937? Kudos to you for having finally put together the whole collection. Took a lot of patience and persistence on your part.
Itβs gorgeous here…yard work awaits. I took a quick survey of the estate (what we jokingly call our yard), and have a plan at least now. Easter…predicted high of 78! Enjoy your day! ;)

I do feel that this long search was worth it!
It isn’t gorgeous here today. Rainy and gray and sort of yucky – makes for a lethargic day!
But you northern Midwest residents deserve it so enjoy!

I can recall so many times watching “The Quiet Man” with my mom when I was growing up, a TV event when it would be shown; then, in ensuing years, I agree, I was offended with some of the scenes you mentioned til basically making my peace with it again over time, definitely having to put things in perspective OF the times and how far we’ve come in how we portray women onscreen (not just women, but animals, too – – like, there are scenes in “Love In The Afternoon” [Cooper/Hepburn/Chevalier] and “To Catch A Thief” [Grace Kelly, Cary Grant] where it’s viewed as amusing to blame the little dog and spank it repeatedly and, to use your words, I cringe every time I see it even though I expect it – – but I’ve learned to not let it take away from what else is good in the movie, knowing that today no animals can be harmed in filming; is not allowed). Even later than the 50s, like 1970s(?…well, the music was sort of late 70s but I guess the film was around 1980), I’d somewhat recently watched “Urban Cowboy” again with John Travolta and there was a slapping-the-woman-in-the-face thing and it was very jarring/troubling to me.
(Could go on and on with this – – how over the decades, Native Americans were portrayed in books and movies; African Americans; Asian Americans; characters who were obese or had a stutter [even children]; the gamut, poking cruel fun which wasn’t fun at all – – unfair and disrespectful stereotypes. I had a favorite historical novel which I read when I was approx age 13 although it was a little too mature for me at the time – – big sweeping epic set in 19th century British Africa – – and I loved it so much til I realized once I aged in later years that it was the ‘let’s rape the heroine and her captor/rapist ultimately becomes her protector/lover’ … uh, no; unacceptable; we do not glorify rape, ever. The sheltered teen I was – – well, a long time ago, what can I say [I’d even written letters to the author gushing about the book, and received a handwritten response from her although I think she was already age 90]. Took me a long time to put THAT book in said perspective. It was ruined for a long time with me. Just couldn’t and can’t ever be the same again.)
On a happier note, we’re turning the clock now to Easter Sunday and I hope you have a lovely day, Claudia; hopefully with less rain! We were dreary, gray and fogged in/misty on Saturday; a rare cool day of late, bordered by warm ones.
Claudia says
I agree with everything, Vicki!
