A Tiny House and a Cupcake

March 13, 2015 at 8:01 am by Claudia

3-13 cupcake

A thing of beauty.

It’s from our local cupcake shop. After an overabundance of cupcakes from Billy’s Bakery in NYC, I took a break from my favorite indulgence. It got so bad that on the day I was packing and preparing to leave Brooklyn, my attempt to finish a cupcake that was still in the refrigerator failed.

I simply couldn’t eat another bite.

What? Had the world turned upside down?

Happily, I have recovered. Though I am pulling back on sweets again and only indulge on a limited basis. Don was in our neighboring town yesterday, so I asked him if he would, pretty please, bring home a cupcake. And he did.

Are you as fascinated as I am with the Tiny House movement? I love tiny things, as you know, and I admire those who are deciding to live with less. A Tiny House for Don and me? No. We’d go nuts. But that doesn’t stop my fascination with all things Tiny House.

On the road to our town’s recycling station, I can see that someone is building a Tiny House. I made Don stop the car the other day so I could take a picture for you.

3-13 tiny house

It’s back in the woods, so I did my best with the iPhone. Isn’t it adorable? A skylight. A sleeping loft.

I wonder what the inside looks like.

I’ll keep tabs on it for you.

New post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page.

Happy Friday.

I was actually watching some videos on You Tube about tiny houses last night. I’ve been giving some thought to the way we accumulate things over the years. This is probably due to the fact that we just cleaned out my parents ‘ apartment and storage facilities after moving them to assisted living. It has really opened my eyes to stuff. Although, I don’t think I could function in a space that small, I will be once again going through my possessions and pairing down. “Simplify, simplify,” is my new motto.

Cupcakes are much better than a whole cake! My favourite is carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and Laura’s is red velvet!
I could survive nicely in a tiny house. I think the floor plan is the key to how spacious they can be. As long as I had a small yard so I could plant flowers and a tiny patio with an awning, I would be very content.
Be brave, Claudia, and knock on the door of the tiny house and explain your curiosity. They may think you’re a nut or they may be your next friend!
Hugs to you and Don. Loving pets to the Dame.

I’ve thought about that, Debbie. If I see someone there, I just may ask if I can see inside!

Love the tiny house movement. I know I couldn’t do it, but I am fascinated by it also. In my younger days I believe I could. I lived in a travel trailer for awhile while going to college. Now I’ve acquired too much stuff…even while I downsize I still can’t part with it all. I do love a good cupcake, now you make me want a nice yummy one!
    hugs,
    Linda

The tiny house movement is fascinating to me. Would I want to live in one? No, my books would barely fit in that one. I wonder if many older people are living in them. My mother in law lived with us when she was in her early 70’s and when her arthritis began to bother her in the winter she had to walk inside the house. No room for that in a tiny house. The cupcake looks yummy. I made a coconut pie and took some to my uncle this morning.

You’re absolutely right! Although I could build a tiny house and turn it into my library….

Several Tiny House shows on HGTV & DIY networks. I know I couldn’t do it, but it is fascinating and I do love to watch the shows. The ones who do this w/ kids are the ones who totally amaze me. I know that would never work for me. And there are seldom doors inside, which brings up the question as to how the kids would learn how to slam the doors when things don’t go their way? I do need some alone time, so maybe if you both work all day it wouldn’t be so bad, but being retired….. oh, my!!
A lovely cupcake. Just enough when you have the taste for cake, and you don’t want to have to think about the rest of the cake sitting on the counter. Good choice!!

Good point! How would we learn to slam a door effectively? Goodness knows, I slammed mine enough when I was growing up!

Cupcakes…tiny cakes, then a photo of a tiny house. Hmm, theme? I love Cupcakes, but couldn’t live in a tiny house. I’d forever be going to the storage locker to pet my yarn stash. Where would I house my needlework supplies, threads, kits? My books? Nope, tiny house won’t do. That being said, I do love reading the tiny house blogs, as well as the miniaturists’ blogs, and seeing the insides. I also love the insides of filled cupcakes….theme, again?

That cupcake looks scrumptious. Now I want one! We’re off in a bit to go shopping. Might have to find a cupcake shop on our way.

Our future plans include building a tiny house on a little piece of land on an island on the west coast that we frequent. We’ll keep our house here but “escape” there as often as we can and then one day, retire there. The Tiny House movement fascinates me as well and the cottage we rent to visit out there for now is just 600 square feet but we love the coziness of it for the 2 of us. We even have our house plan chosen. One day!

As much as I am intrigued by the tiny house movement…I know I couldn’t do it. There is no room there for separation from your mate…much as I love him. No storage….we have clothing for 4 seasons…not to mention books and DVDs…where would all that go? Then, what do I do when my adult boys come home for a Sunday home cooked dinner…go out? I am prepared to downsize to something smaller, but tiny is a bit much for me. Perhaps if I was much, much younger…maybe I could make it work. Cupcakes make so much sense…no leftovers! So, this just begs the question…are you going to have pie on pi day?? ;)

Of course, though we also had pie yesterday, Donnamae!

I’m afraid I wouldn’t have been able to tolerate a tiny house even when I was younger. Too tall, too many books, records, favorite things, clothes for four seasons. I’ve lived in ridiculously tiny studio apartments, but even they were a bit bigger than the standard tiny house.

And I don’t like the idea of sleeping in a loft and having to climb down a ladder every time I want to go to the bathroom. There! I’ve said it!

I do love cupcakes! Why do they seem so much more special than a slice of cake?

Right now I live in a 400 square foot, one bedroom, apartment. Though I have lived in one house that was smaller than this, I can’t for the life of me imagine why you would want to! :) They’re cute, they are fascinating – but where I’m at is plenty “tiny house” enough for me. :)

I agree! I’ve lived in one room apartments – two of them – that were very tiny. That’s tiny enough for me!

When I was age 12-13, my best friend was Maren and her uncle/aunt owned some land in a more-rural part of California near Bishop. It was part of an old movie set and there was a small house on it which they decided to complete…I think, for the film, it had a false front or something but, of course, it was probably just a shell inside. Anyway, it was small but very cozy, and I just loved being there on Easter holiday. It did have a toilet but we had to flush it by dumping a bucket of water down it. Maybe this memory is a reason why I, too, like so many others and you, have interest and fascination with Tiny Houses. I love to look at their interiors and imagine if it could be do-able for me to live in one. Maybe as a single person but, no, with my husband and I, we’re stumbling over each other now, even in a 3-bedroom house. But I love the concept of minimal living and having everything cozy and compact, if not mobile. (Maybe we should just buy a motor home or a trailer!) I’m thinking if I was in my 20s again, before I’d accumulated so much STUFF, how much I might have preferred a Tiny House to endless apartments with noisy neighbors. I just don’t know how I’d do with one of those composting toilets, though…

One of my favorite childhood books was called “Mr. Piper’s Bus” by Eleanor Clymer. Mr. Piper accumulated a lot of pets and, if I’m remembering this correctly, couldn’t any longer stay comfortably in his small city apartment. So, he loaded everybody on to an old school bus and traveled around til he found a new home in the country with lots of space for his animals. I then had a fantasy about living on a school bus which was converted to a home on wheels. But even for Mr. Piper, it was a temporary way to live. I can see where the Tiny House could be perfect for a weekend/vacation getaway, but then I’d have to get back to reality.

Ha! That cupcake looks delicious- now that I have “the diagnosis” I try and steer clear — but my grandkids all have cupcakes for their birthday parties nowdays— so I do get one then! AND I SAVOR IT! I don’t even care if the icing turns my teeth blue!
I am fascinated with the tiny house movement– my son started building one on our property TO BE MOVED– but it’s still here and he’s stalled out. Here’s Hoping he makes it happen soon!

I love love love the tiny house movement. But, I admit, I can’t live in one. I have to much fabric, too much yarn, to many hobbies. :-) Notheless the use of old and salvaged material is wonderful. I would love ot go to a work shop at Salvage, Texas. Maybe next year? :-)

Tiny houses make so much sense to me. I went over an acquaintance house the other day, she said we down sized. My entire house would fit in her town house basement. Who knows how large the previous house was, and that’s the whole point of the Tiny House Movement.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
