My parents’ 45+ year old sansevieria is blooming again. There’s another stalk in the back that already bloomed. The scent is heavenly but it is most powerful at night. One year there were three separate stalks, but usually there are two. I like to think of them as Mom and Dad paying a visit.
It is extremely cold here today. It took a long time for the house to warm up. It’s going to stay that way through Tuesday, so we’re in for some Wintery temps.
But it’s sunny today. Tomorrow, rain, sleet, some snow, and ice. Oh, goody.
Other than that, which goes with the territory in the Hudson Valley, Don is going to brave the cold and recycle this morning and I’m going to work on a few little projects. We’re trying to keep busy while we try to come to terms with the precarious health of Don’s best friend, who is also my very good friend. We love him dearly and, try as we might to distract ourselves, our thoughts are with him. As they should be.
So here’s something cute and distracting:
Livvy and Pip, my two girls customized by VegaDolls. I love looking at these two cuties. Natalia, of VegaDolls, lives in Spain and she is such a lovely person! Her dolls are unlike any others out there and I am very, very taken by them. You can feel Natalia’s sweetness in them.
Rest in Peace, Sidney Poitier. A giant of a man in every way.
Don met him years ago. I’ll let him tell you (from Facebook):
Decades ago I was in a drugstore in Beverly Hills and found myself standing next to him. Against my own judgement, I gingerly approached and introduced myself. I told him I was so very sorry to bother him, but he was a true inspiration. He smiled. Yes, that smile. He shook my hand and said, “I’m Sidney, Don, thank you.”
Okay my friends. I’m running a little late this morning.
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.
Linda MacKean says
I’m sorry to hear your friend is ill. Life is so full of ups and downs and more downs it seems these days. I’m much better but the covid symptom of fatigue is a hard one and can linger for months I’ve read. Winter is already a hard time for me. Trying hard to stay positive. Sydney Poitier…such an amazing man. RIP.
kathy in iowa says
praying for you, linda!
hope you take it easy, give yourself time to fully recuperate.

Claudia says
Stay positive, my friend. Sending you a big hug.
Don’s friend has a failing heart and he won’t make it without a transplant, so they’re running tests on him now.
Stay safe.
Judy says
So the girls have bunnies! Just too sweet!
Claudia says
Yes, they have bunnies, and a hedgehog, and a dog, and a lamb!
Stay safe, Judy.

there is so much beauty and goodness in the world, but there are hard things, too … so praying for don’s and your friend. you all, too.
and for mr. poitier’s family. guess who’s coming to dinner, they call me mr. tibbs, to sir with love …
glad don had that chance conversation with sidney poitier.
looks like lizzy and pip could be besties among the six girls …? sweet outfits and rabbits there.
i have never seen a plant like that bloom before … wonderful. :)
stay warm! it’s been super-cold here, too … another reason i am grateful to have a garage that gets heated (to maybe 50 degrees?) in winter. i pay for that, of course, but it’s worth it.
i am on my feet now eight-plus hours a day at this new job and really feel it by the end of the day and in the morning so am taking a slow start here today. and searching for better shoes to wear at work.
hope you have a good day. stay safe and warm.

Chris K in of WI says
kathy, is your new job in the same field? Are your days happier in your new job? Oh, I do hope so!! take care.
Claudia says
I think Livvy and Pip are sisters, since they look alike.
I was wondering the other day about standing all day long and your back. Is that causing any back problems?
Stay safe, Kathy.

It seems that getting to our age (I’m 69) brings sad news more often as we lose friends and family. I’m so sorry…it’s hard.
It is cold here too. We got 16-17 inches of snow the past 2 days. Today it is sunny and the snow is beautiful. I am trying to appreciate it.
I have a sansevieria plant. It has never bloomed so far. I didn’t know they did.
Take care
kathy in iowa says
good luck and prayers for safety with all that snow … wow!
and you have a great attitude about it. :)
agree about the news we hear so much as we get older (i turn 64 in a couple months) … it’s hard … so i keep praying, avoid the news on tv and try to keep my focus on all the good things (because they are there, too).
happy, safe and warm saturday to you!

Claudia says
You got a LOT of snow, Marilyn! My goodness.
They do bloom, but it seems rare. Both Meredith and I have 45 year old sansevieria plants that were our parents and her plant also blooms.
Stay safe, Marilyn.

I’m so sorry to hear about the delicate health of a good friend. Will be in my prayers. Sidney Poitier was a giant of a man. May he rest in peace. And do those leggings on the dolls have a seam down the back? Are they knitted by hand? And if they are done by hand, do you think they are knitted with a tapestry needle? Your dolls are amazing.
Claudia says
They have a seam, but I believe they are made out of stretchy fabric. They’re definitely not hand knitted.
Thanks so much, Tana. Who knew I’d fall in love with these dolls?
Stay safe.
Anne says
Such a sweet story from Don! I’m glad he summoned the courage to speak. I’ll bet it was truly appreciated by Mr. Poitier as well. After all, he must have endured many negative comments during his career, so the positive ones must always have been welcome.
Claudia says
He was such a kind man. A true gentleman.
Thanks, Anne.
Stay safe.
Anne says
well, and Don is kind and a true gentleman as well. works both ways.

Your sansevieria along with heavenly scent and blooms is such a blessing…I love that!
Heavenly for sure!
Health challenges take their toll for all involved and may you and Don, your friend all of you dealing with them find a way to healing and peace.
The odd weather patterns have also had a huge impact here in BC..from heat, to water to snow this year. On the bright side …the snow is beautiful and may you too enjoy some beautiful views out the window however the weather is playing out.
Livvy and Pip do radiate a sweetness and i am loving the girls wardrobe choices! Thanks for sharing!
Claudia says
It’s such fun to dress them, Grace!
Thank you for your kind words.
Stay safe.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend….sending positive vibes his way.
I love that your sansevieria is blooming. Is that usually a once a year occasion? I feel lucky I got my violets to rebloom….believe me, that is an accomplishment.
The girls’ clothes are positively adorable…I’ve seen a few of their outfits that I’d like to own. Enjoy your evening! ;)
Claudia says
Yes, once a year, around Christmas time.
I am jealous, frankly, of the girls’ clothes.
Stay safe, Donnamae.

Hello Claudia
We will never forget Fran Kranz or Mass , thanks to you. I tried detective work to write him about Mass . No luck. If you can track him down I would love to thank him. Unforgettable , wrenching, compelling film. Wow is so very small. F or such a brave person. Karen
Claudia says
I’m so happy to hear you felt the same way about Mass, Karen. It’s extraordinary. Thank you for letting me know.
Much love, Claudia

This cold cold blast is just awful. It really does a number on my arthritis. My fingers and wrists just throb in very humid summer days and in these Arctic blast days. “The Golden years” HA!!
Sorry to hear about Don’s & your friend. It seems like everyone we know is sick. Staying safe is much more involved than ever before.
Girls are cute….cute clothes and shoes and tights and bunnies!!!!!!!! Take care.
Claudia says
I’m so sorry about your arthritis. It does a number on Don’s arthritis, as well.
Don’s best friend needs a heart transplant and it’s very worrying.
Thank you, Chris.
Stay safe.
jeanie says
We’ve lost some good ones in the past few weeks. That’s a wonderful story. Love your plant. We’re cold here, too. Like yours is Hudson Valley typical, same for Michigan.
Sending all good thoughts for your friend. It’s very hard when challenging illness hits home — and friends are home.
Claudia says
He needs a heart transplant, so it’s extremely stressful and worrying.
Thanks, Jeanie
Stay safe.

Love seeing the girls! Beautiful story about Sidney Poitier.I have heard a similar one about Gregory Peck and I had a similar experience with Jeff Bridges. Stay warm!
Claudia says
All three of them were/are extraordinary human beings. I saw Gregory Pecks’s one man show and it was one of the highlights of my life.
Stay safe, Annette.
