After the Surgery

July 26, 2011 at 9:49 am by Claudia

Just a quick update: I’m home. I’m in a great deal of pain, but I’m home. Yesterday’s surgery was supposed to be at noon but due to unexpectedly long surgeries prior to mine, as well as an emergency that my doctor had to attend to, I didn’t get in the operating room until 2:30. The surgery went well – just 2 laparoscopic (is that a word?) cuts. I was home by 9:00 p.m.

Apparently, gas is pumped into the abdomen during the surgery, so that the doctor can see everything clearly. A nurse told me that some patients complain about pain in their right shoulder afterward. Well, let me tell you, my right shoulder and my side are killing me – the muscle spasms are really painful. If this pain would just go away, I think the abdominal pain would seem like a piece of cake.

Didn’t sleep enough because I couldn’t get comfortable. Don keeps saying, “Just think – your gall bladder’s gone – no more attacks!” I know that fact will hit me later, but right now? I just feel crappy.

Hopefully, you will hear from a less crabby Claudia in a few days.

    Hi Claudia,

I’ve been a follower for a long time time. I just haven’t been blogging too much the past few months. I decided to get on here a little bit this morning and your blog was the first one that popped up on my reader. I saw where you had just had surgery so I wanted to stop in and check on you. I’m glad that your surgery went well. I know how bad it hurts. I had mine taken out in 2005. I feel so much better now. I can actually eat good food without getting sick. You will be feeling better soon. Just take it easy for a few days.
Now I’m gonna go back and catch up on your previous posts. :)

    Take care,
    Lee Laurie

Feel better soon, Claudia! I’ve been through the laproscopy-pain-in-the-shoulder thing and it’s no fun. You’re entitled to be crabby. And before you know it, you’ll feel better.

    Hi Claudia,

Glad your surgery is over. I had mine done the same way. They had me put ice packs on my stomach when I was resting and told me to walk around the house as often as I could. I think both of those things really helped. I didn’t have the shoulder pain afterwards mine was before the surgery. Hope you have a quick recovery.

    Hugs from Kansas!

    Hi Claudia,
I know how you feel, I do hope you are feeling better this morning. I remember after my gall bladder surgery I felt like I had done 1 million sit ups….
You really will feel better soon and you will be glad you had the surgery.
Your sewing area is so sweet and such a perfect space. I have a siting area in my bedroom that I’m thinking about using as my sewing room.
Have a restful day and big hugs for you.

Welcome home! Glad to know it’s behind you and you are on the road to recovery. I too had a surgery once that required that same gas — I was told to lie down and it would pass, uh, out (sorry) because sitting up causes it to go up into the shoulders and it is indeed painful. So sorry you’re having to deal with it but it gets better every day. Take care!!

When I had my appendix out my shoulder was killing me for a few days. The nurse told me to carefully get on all fours (like your cute puppies) and stick my bottom in the air for a few minutes. The change of direction would help the gas disapate “naturally” if you know what I mean? LOL! Might be too much info, but it was the only thing that helped make me feel better!

I had to have four…you could play connect the dots on my belly and it would look like a puppy.LOL! Yes the pain is intense the first few days, but then, not so bad! And no more of those awful attacks.

Oh! So sorry to hear you’re recovery is going a bit slower than you hoped. My 19 yo daughter got appendicitis last week and ended up with emergency surgery…they pumped the same gas in her abdomen and she complained a lot about the shoulder pain. In fact, she said the same thing…if the shoulder pain would go away the abdominal pain would be a piece of cake!

We’re actually off to the surgeon for her post-op appt. Thinking good thoughts for you as you recover!

So glad you’re home, and on your way to recovery. Post-op pain sucks. Okay, I said it. It sucks sucks sucks.

Please take your pain meds… round the clock. Pain meds are prescribed for a good reason after surgery. You don’t want to pass out three days post-op like someone foolish I know who thought she could tough it out, and actually let her body slip into shock. (That foolish person would be moi.)

Okay, enough lecturing. Sending happy, healing, nurturing thoughts your way…
