After the Rain: Late Bloomers, Leaves Falling, Light Changing

September 6, 2012 at 8:16 am by Claudia

Don and I took a walk around the gardens yesterday. It was early evening after a stormy day. Gosh, I love the changes in light that happen after a storm – that combination of dark storm clouds, white fluffy clouds and the sunlight peeking through.

I have lots of late bloomers here in the garden: zinnias, sunflowers, sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ and the hyacinth bean vine.

But leaves are beginning to fall. The black walnut trees are already dropping their leaves.

So are the maples, just a little.

You can feel it in the air. You can see it in the light. Soon all this green will turn to gold and red and brown.

I’m not quite ready.

Give me a few more weeks.

A reminder: This week will be our second A Favorite Thing Saturday. I’d love it if you joined in. I’ll have the post up and the links ready at 8:00 pm (EST) on Friday night. Stop on by. It won’t be a party without you.

Happy Thursday.

I love the moody sky in the last photo, Claudia. The contrasting light and dark is so pronounced and striking.

Lovely late blooms Claudia. We have had so much rain my flowers are lush, wild, and overgrown looking. There are many mosquitoes too and someone died with West Nile virus near us so I am not going out in the evenings at all. I have planned to link on Friday and we have house guests. I shall see how that works. hugs, Olive

I love the light also, and a change is a good thing, even if we resist it..

Your shots are so pretty, love the pink shoes, seems I am not the only one. Is it normal for your hyacinth beans to finally bloom now? This is our first year up here, and mine just started so I have no idea when they should be doing their thing. On the coast I thought they bloomed, if at all…earlier.

It’s been a bit soggy here the past few days. Our figs are coming in fast and furious! They are so good! The leaves are dropping off of our Yellow Poplar tree and making a mess all over our patio. Not turning color just brown and dead from a too dry summer. I love to watch the clouds in the sky…one of my favorite things to do!~Hugs, Patti

I agree. I love the “after the storm” time. I don’t think my Hyacinth Bean vine managed to make it through the morning glory vines…

Yup, autumn’s in the air here too, just a chill in a morning and change in the birdsong so far, but it’s coming.

Well, you wouldn’t know Autumn was always here, Claudia, what with the humidity we’ve had for several days! And yesterday the thunder, lightening and torrential rain was positively Biblical!? I think it may be the remnants of Isaac. And we have Leslie and Michael churning in the sea. Oh, the joys of coastal New England living! Your flowers are beautiful. I especially love the color of the hyacinth bean vine!

I especially love that last photo ~ it really captured the weather mood. I’ll be linking up for My Favorite Thing (although you’ve already been over to visit thank you very much). Have a great weekend.

Dear, I’m in SF and off shortly but wanted to tell you that I’ll have a post up for Sat. but may not be able to link back to you, unless I get to the hotel in Broome, Aus. (about 30 hours from now!) and have Internet!

Forgive me for not e-mailing you as I had planned – I know it was my turn – just had too many issues over the past couple of weeks and time was my enemy.
I have been thinking of you, Don, and Scout – and I send hugs and best wishes.

    Fondly, Mary

So pretty…I think the plants are so relieved that the weather is cooling a bit and they are getting a good cool drink. I’m not ready for fall even though the summer was a sizzler…cold wicked weather comes soon enough…I will try to remember to enjoy it all as it comes…especially the cooler breezes in the evenings and morning in the middle of the country where we live…Hope everyone is having cooler days to enjoy what’s left of summer!

Hi Claudia, I’m so happy that fall is on it’s way. Summer has been so busy this year, I’ve just missed so much. Your gardens are beautiful, you have so many different, and pretty flowers.
I think of you often. I know you still miss your sweet Riley, and I hope you are doing well.
    Sending prayers and hugs, Debi

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
