These autumn wildflowers – asters – are all over the property. This clump is right by our rain barrel. The front lawn is now covered in leaves once again. In fact, everything is covered in leaves, including my car. It’s a sunny and beautiful day. Don has to sing at a memorial service today. A few months back, a young man heard one of Don’s songs and asked if he could sing it at his uncle’s memorial service. Don, of course, said yes. About a week ago, Don got a phone call from the widow, asking if Don would sing the song at another celebration of her husband’s life that is taking place in Connecticut. It’s in the afternoon and he’ll have a lovely drive. He’s taking my car as his is with his mechanics, who are trying to figure out the lights on his dashboard that keep coming on, even though the car is fine. Otherwise, it will fail inspection.
I liked cars better when there was no computer involved.
Yesterday’s adventure:
We went to the library for our walk – a little earlier than usual, about 9:45 or so. The library sits on a hill and there is a long driveway that leads up to the building. It’s perfect for our walk because there isn’t a lot of traffic. We started at the top, and walked downward towards the road, turned around and started walking back up, Suddenly Don said, “Look!” There was a black bear crossing the driveway, coming from the rail trail on the right. He headed for the back yards of some houses. After standing still for a bit, we continued on the walk, knowing he was gone. Went up and down a few more times and then it was me who said “Look!!” He was crossing the drive again going back toward the rail trail. But this time, he turned left into the area behind the library, walking near the rear deck and, eventually, making a right turn onto the trail.
It was so neat to see him! And, as the library hadn’t opened yet, we were the only people there. After we finished the walk, a guy came off the trail with his dog (named Bear, ironically) and we warned him about the bear. But I’m pretty sure the bear was long gone at that point.
Very, very cool! And just far enough away from us that we didn’t feel any fear. Just awe.
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.

wow! glad you and don had that accidental-bear-sighting experience together and safely!
those asters are beautiful. a yard-full must be wonderful to see.
thanks to don for both sharing his song (with someone’s nephew) and later singing it for that same family during such a tough time. beautiful, kind heart you have there, don!
safe travels, safe raking up all those leaves, safe always. hope you two and everyone else have a nice weekend.
as much as i enjoy crossing things off my to-do list and having things in their places, after an uneven week of things (including sleep), i am okay with making a slow start here this morning.
again, happy weekend.

That is wonderful to have seen a bear. You have been lucky, of late, to have seen a lot of beautiful birds and now a bear! Lovely. I did have a Mama moose and her two babies spend some time in my front yard eating aspen leaves. I did not get any really good photos because I know how dangerous it is to upset a Mama moose. People do not realize just how massive moose are nor how quick there are. I have learned this since living in the mountains.
Have a peaceful and enjoyable fall day,
Kaye

I’ve seen moose before, but at a distance. I bet those babies are darned cute!
Stay safe, Kaye.

They were not little babies, more like adolescents, but still cute!

A bear sighting…lucky you, and twice. One was spotted at night in our neighborhood last May…but thankfully none since. I personally am not ready for that.
It’s quite warm today, but later a cold front comes through, and then it’s chilly again. This has been a weird fall. I’ve only seen one tree change color so far, but because it’s been so dry lately, the leaves that are falling are brown. We are traveling for a few days with friends in search of color…heading north.
That’s nice that Don is able to sing at these memorial services….hope the trip is pleasant for him.
Enjoy your day! ;)

We have some color but it’s been very dry lately and some of our leaves are just plain brown as they fall to the ground.
Thankfully, black bears aren’t aggressive unless you are a threat to their cubs!
Stay safe, Donnamae.

Lovely you and Don were able to enjoy the bear sighting and you weren’t afraid. Don’s singing at the memorial service is making a sad occasion a little better. It was a beautiful day here, almost like a spring day. Our lawn (much, much smaller than yours) is covered in leaves, too. Enjoy your weekend. Hugs, Elaine

Thank you so much, Elaine.
Stay safe.

It’s funny, you know. I’m an Aussie and people always take with fear about our animals. But bears?? Gorgeous, yes, but from far, far away and no surprises, thanks!!
Claudia says
Black bears aren’t aggressive. Brown bears and Grizzly Bears are (we don’t have those bears around here.)
Thanks so much, Denise.
Stay safe.

How moving that Don was able to sing one of his songs at someone’s life celebration.
I am awestruck by the wildlife that surrounds you, At the back of my library is narrow alleyway, shared with a converted cinema built in the 1920s, beautiful building which is now a pub and restaurant. The food waste bins are out the back and although they’re covered, it doesn’t stop me seeing the odd rattie chancing their luck. That’s the sum of my wildlife encounters!
Happy Weekend!

Lots and lots of wildlife here, Dee Dee. It truly is one of the joys of living here.
Thanks so much.
Stay safe.
