Yesterday, I started work on the quilt again. There’s a lot of hand quilting to do on this baby, mostly because I’m using random circles that are overlapping each other to create a fairly densely quilted top. What have you started, Claudia? It’s so easy to get discouraged because the squares themselves are large and there are 25 of them. I’m just now in the middle of my second square. But that’s what winters, with more than a dash of patience, are for.
We were witness to a frightening car crash yesterday, right in front of our house. We were sitting in the den when we heard the screech of brakes. I looked out the window to see a car skidding out of control. Then I heard the terrible sound of metal hitting a solid object, in this case the trees that border the road just beyond our next door neighbor’s property. I jumped up, put on my shoes (I was in my pajamas) and ran across the yard in the direction of the crash. Don was right behind me. At first I couldn’t see the driver at all, which filled me with dread. There was another car parked ahead of the damaged car and they were calling 911. As I ran toward the driver’s side of the car, I saw a young woman sit up, clearly shaken. She was crying. She may have sustained an injury to her hand. When I asked her what happened, she said something about the brake and the gas pedal. Apparently she had almost hit the other car head on and when they saw her car go into a tailspin, they doubled back to help her. I can’t imagine how terrifying the crash must have been to this young woman, who kept saying that she had never had an accident before.
Perhaps she hit the gas when she meant to hit the brake and then slammed on her brakes so quickly that she couldn’t maintain control of the car. I don’t know. The ambulance and fire trucks came very quickly. All I could think was thank goodness she was alright. She slammed into a tree; it could have been so much worse.
It prompted Don and me to once again acknowledge that everything can change in an instant. I’m grateful that she is relatively unscathed. Cars can be fixed.
I don’t think Don has ever seen me run that fast.
So we started the day with a very frightening accident and we ended it (at 1 am) with the euphoria of the Red Sox winning the American League pennant. It was a nail biter. At one point I screamed and shouted so loudly (after a grand slam by Shane Victorino) that my throat felt raw. Oh boy. A voice coach and teacher should know better! Now we get a few days off before the World Series starts on Wednesday. Yay, Red Sox!!

Thank goodness the accident was not worse than it was. It is amazing how adrenalin kicks in and makes us run faster, and react in a way we wouldn’t think possible.

It was pretty scary, and the adrenalin does kick in! Thank goodness she was able to walk away from the crash.
I have been sewing and decided to break for an apple…I thought I’ll see if Claudia has posted yet, and since I am sewing ( applique for awhile then some hand quilting on the current project ) I briefly wondered if you’d started back on your quilt yet and there it was! :)

I watched the game last night too, and was so disappointed Detroit didn’t win:( Can’t wait to see your quilt all quilted, I need to use all the vintage sheets I have and whip one up. Hope you were able to settle back down after witnessing the accident? I witnessed a lady turn a corner and the door of her car came open, a baby in a car seat slid out into the road and a semi straddled it. I had to pull over and it took me quite some time before I could drive again.
I love the Red Sox, they have my heart, but the Tigers are a close second, Dawn. If we had lost, I would have been perfectly happy cheering the Tigers on. I know how hard this is for Tigers fans.
That accident sounds absolutely horrifying! I would have been very shaken up, as well.
Seeing an accident is always so scary. Hope the young lady is OK! Yes life can change in an instant! Yay Red Sox!! Have a great Sunday!

Glad to hear that the lady was okay. Very scary for her and for you and Don! Things can change so quickly.. that is why it is good to enjoy the small things in life every day!! Example… I am currently reading blogs instead of cleaning!

Thank goodness the girl will be fine!! As you said this is why we pay for insurance!! A car can be repaired or replace- a person can be repaired to a point, but never replaced. She was blessed!!
That’s a heck of a way to start a morning out Claudia. So glad she wasn’t severely hurt.
We have twin girls. They were born yesterday (Saturday) afternoon. They are so tiny one is about 2 1/2# and the other about 3 1/2# but the doctors are amazed at how great they are doing. They are breathing on their own and have just surprised everyone. They still have a long way to go but they are here. Brittany is doing well also.
There’s always something going on here!!! LOL

I am the same way if I witness an accident Claudia..I don’t stop to think I just get there as fast as I can..I don’t know how much help I could be but even talking to someone traumatized is a help..I can’t wait to see this quilt finished..

Oy. What a Up-and-Down day you had! I think I’d still be shaking a bit from the accident. But then the Sox certainly did their part to distract you. And you’re right – that game was the definition of the term NAIL BITER! Now we get extra days of baseball! October is the best month of the year to me. Nature at its most gorgeous. Not hot any more. Not cold yet – usually. Getting ready to burrow in for the Winter. Lights needed for suppertime again. Heavy sigh of contentment. :>)

You were the first thing I thought about when the Sox won! I said Claudia will be so happy. I’m a Blue Jays fan and they haven’t got anywhere for years – hard to keep cheering but I’m happy the Sox won the AL and hope they win the World Series! J

Oh Claudia! that is terrifying.
I was sitting in our front yard one time and heard squealing of tires and looked up just in time to see an SUV type vehicle…tumbling past our neighbors house out on the main highway! It rolled about 3 times before coming to a stop.
I had my phone in my hand and called 911 immediately. We jumped into the car and went down there, but our neighbors whose house it was right in front of…were already out there. There were two men and they were both out walking around….in apparent shock. We tried to get them to sit down…but they couldn’t speak English. We left soon after the first responders got there.
I was so shaky after that. That is so scary!
Excited about the Red Sox winning! Yay!!! I hope they win.

We did the same thing, once the first responders came, we left. They were out there quite a while. It’s very scary but especially for that young woman!
Oh that poor young woman, thank goodness she was okay and had you there to keep her calm. Bless her heart, she must be plenty sore today. Good for your Sox, I went to bed nice and early, but I did watch for a few minutes and it was 0-0.

The women who just missed being hit by her were there and they were shaken, as well. But bless them, they turned around and came back to help her.
The game was incredible with a pitcher’s duel for the first half, then we got a home run, then Detroit got 2 runs in and it stayed that way until we somehow had the bases loaded and Shane Victorino hit a grand slam. We screamed our heads off!
I’m relieved the driver was fine, Claudia. That was much too close a call for her.
The quilt is looking lovely. I’ve got a knitting project on the go and decided to include a photo on the blog, in an attempt to make myself accountable for actually finishing it. This fall would be nice . . .

How scary to have that accident right by your house. I’m so glad the young woman was OK. Unfortunately, I know how life can change in an instant. It’s sounds so cliche, but it’s true – cherish every moment with your loved ones.
We watched part of the game last night and when the Red Sox won I thought of you cheering your team on. Our AL team fought for a wild card spot in the playoffs but came up short at the end. Your comment “I screamed and shouted so loudly (after a grand slam” made me chuckle – for I had a similar experience this year – but for a different reason. I’ll send you an email sometime soon with “my story”. It really is fun and unbelievable – and with you being a mlb baseball fan, I think you’ll enjoy the story!
Goodness, adrenalin has a lot to offer. So glad the driver wasn’t seriously hurt and so glad that you were close by. I once saw Robert jump the fence and scoop our old Atlas, a 90lb dog, from the path of an oncoming car. It happened in an instant. Both were fine. I said to him that I didn’t know he could move that fast and he said that he didn’t either.
Scary, scary morning for you! I will have to dig out a quilt to finish up this winter, but right now I have a slip to make for the baptismal gown I made three years ago for my sister’s first granddaughter. Now granddaughter #2 is here and she will wear the same gown, but will have a new slip of her own. Some embroidered flowers and lace. All done in white on white. Good thing I have a great sewing lamp!
Too much excitement, Claudia! Good thing you had that quilt to calm you down a bit. I’m a born-and-bred Dodgers fan, but I’ll be rooting for the Red Sox to win the Series.
