The Art Museum

April 21, 2012 at 8:00 am by Claudia

On Friday, I had a bit of free time before rehearsal, so I went to the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford’s beautiful art museum. It’s the perfect size, not so huge that you find it overwhelming. There is currently a special Andrew Wyeth Exhibition going on that shows some of his paintings along with the studies he executed of each subject. I saw the Atheneum’s collection of paintings and a Civil War Exhibition that included a letter handwritten by Abraham Lincoln to Horace Greely. That gave me goose bumps. I stand in awe of Abraham Lincoln.

This sculpted trapeze artist hangs from the ceiling of one of the rooms.

And this beautiful stained glass ceiling is in another room.

This is one of my favorites from this museum, “Two Girls with Oleander” by Klimt.

I included this because it’s “The Tempest” by Magritte. And that’s the name of the play I’m here to coach.

This is “Autumn in the Village” by Marc Chagall.

There were beautiful sculptures and antiquities. I had a lovely time and plan to go back again. Because I’m working at the theater, I get in free.

My schedule is filling up – so much so, that I can’t go home this week. I’m sad. However, it would be too hard to drive all that way for just one day at home. I broke the news to Don last night. I know he would like me there for a few days as we had a scare with Riley on Thursday night. He was bleeding from his mouth (the right side) and Don couldn’t get near him to figure out what was going on. It was very frightening. We finally decided that Don should take him to the Emergency Vet and, miraculously, on the way there Riley stopped bleeding and seems to be fine today. Thank goodness. There must have been some injury to the right side of his mouth – a cut or a sore of some kind. He was fine on Friday. He ate his food and he didn’t bleed. Keep our boy in your thoughts, okay? He’s had a hard time of it and I want him to be with us as long as possible.

Have a good Saturday.

Claudia, my thoughts are with Riley. It is so scary when you don’t know exactly what is wrong.

I envy you the Wyath show. He is one of my all time favorites.that sounds like a wonderful museum.

So sorry you can’t make it home to be with Don and your babies. Hope Riley is feeling better, that must have scared Don to death. You will be busy so your week will go quickly, poor Don his will be slow as molasses.
    Love you,

The museum looked great, especially the Civil War exhibit, which I’d love to see. Have you read “Killing Lincoln” yet? I just finished it and its really good. Check Riley’s teeth to be sure he doesn’t have an abscessed tooth. One of my dogs just did and it kept bleeding on and off.

Claudia, I will send up periodic prayers for poor Riley. I know how you must feel. Thank you so much for a glimpse of that fantastic museum.

I confess I am no art connoisseur but I know what I like when I see it. I adore that autumn scene. It’s so unusual for an artist to put blue in an autumn scene and blue is my colour. I also love the one called “Two Girls with Oleander”. I love the mixture of colours in it. The gold with the pink and the black in the dress. The hanging trapeze artist just amazes me.

The exterior looks like a castle. I love the castle look today as much as I did when I was a little girl. Well, I guess the little girl is still there. So is yours, Claudia. How do I know? I don’t know. I just know! Hah Hah Hah!

This weekend will pass, dear Claudia, as all the others have and when you’re ninety or something, you won’t even think of it. I hope you have a good day, Professor! Hang in there, baby!

Great museum, I love Wyeth, it must have been beautiful. As to Riley, you might want to check his teeth, when dogs get older they can dental problems that could cause bleeding.

I hope Riley is fine now. I hate to see an animal in distress. I loved the painting with the two girls. It really is beautiful. Deb

Hugs to Riley. It’s hard to be away when things like that happen. Love the museum Claudia, it’s like a medieval castle! And Andrew Wyeth, I love his paintings. IF you go back, take a tiny picture of one of his for me, pls. (only if you want to and can). Ann

Claudia, I absolutely love museums. But I have to say, sometimes when I am looking at some art pieces, I can’t help but think- what were they thinking? LOL. Enjoy yourself . Smiles, Susie

Love Wyeths..esp Jamie but dad and granddad were no slouches.. :D

Maybe Riley lost a tooth? We had a similar scare years ago with our 12 year old girl Gadget and it turned out to be a tooth that had fallen/torn out badly…Also my Justice ran into a chair recently because of her poor eyesight and suddenly blood everywhere and she had cut her tongue… Don’t you wish they could just tell us?

What a great chance to see some stunning artists, lucky for you.

Poor Riley, it’s so hard when the animals in your life are unwell, and they can’t tell you what’s wrong…

Hope that the poor baby recovers.

Thank you so much for posting these gorgeous pictures, Claudia. When I think of Hartford I think of Hockey and Insurance! So your stay there has been a pleasant eye-opener. As much as you miss home, it must be some comfort to have these beautiful places to distract you in your free hours. I hope your pup-pup will be okay.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
