Song for Autumn
Don’t you imagine the leaves dream now
how comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of the air and the endless
freshets of wind? And don’t you think
the trees, especially those with
mossy hollows, are beginning to look for
the birds that will come – six, a dozen – to sleep
inside their bodies? And don’t you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow? The pond
stiffens and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out
its long blue shadows. The wind wags
its many tails. And in the evening
the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.

Happy Saturday.
Happy Autumn, Claudia! One of my favorite months!
Mine, too!
Stay safe, Ellen.
great poem to start the season! i love mary oliver’s writing, its style, her focus on nature and her clearly adoring it, encouraging us to get outside in so many other beautiful words.
if i were to write a poem about autumn (and maybe i will someday, but probably not), it would:
a, not be as beautiful as this one.
b, include rustling sounds, brilliant blue skies early in the season that then turn gray.
c, include gratitude for autumn leading to winter.
d, be a haiku. haha.
thanks for sharing.
hope you, don and everyone else have a great weekend! stay safe.

Happy Autumn!
It’s my favorite season. I love sweaters, soup, chili, cider and donuts, football games, candy corn, pumpkins on the porch, and pumpkin pie! I love the changing leaves colors and we take a drive every fall to admire the colors and stop at little farm markets along the way.
Take care
Ummmm…pumpkin pie!
Thanks, Marilyn.

Beautiful poem to start off the day! I am sitting in my favorite place, since I’m not much of an outdoors girl, which is at the end of our long driveway, where there’s a small creek, lots of trees and bushes, and most of the birds, little red, squirrels, and chipmunks hang out. Never know who I’m going to see here. Today it’s cool with a delicious breeze, smelling of the fall, and some of the leaves are turning. The beautiful poem reminded me of the magic of nature. Thank you for sharing.
Sounds lovely, Nora.
You’re most welcome.

What a lovely and evocative poem. I haven’t come across it before. There’s something about the light at this time of year that makes it special.
Also, is my favourite time of year for TV schedules. A new series of All Creatures Great & Small started last week.
Happy Weekend
Which means we’ll be seeing it at the first of next year!
Stay safe, Dee Dee.
Thank you for sharing. I had forgotten that poem from Mary Oliver.
It is so beautiful. Autumn is such a joyous season.
Thank you, Lyn.

from memory:
if you can sing do it
if not even silence can sound
like praise like happiness
from that pool of shade you
you found beneath the everlasting.

I do love Mary Oliver and I love, love autumn. The poem is beautiful.
I’ve spent hours on the couch blowing my nose and wishing my Covid away as I stare out the windows watching the trees change. This morning I caught up reading your back posts and enjoyed your bird stories. While we’ve had the occasional hawk sit on our pergola, we’ve never had a blue heron. Very much in awe you had that experience. If we’re lucky we spot the occasional sandhill crane.
Feeling perkier today for first time in a week and hope to get outside. Weather is cooler and our long drought has finally broken.
Take care,
Kay
Oh, you came down with Covid! I’m so sorry, Kay. Feel better soon.
We see the Great blue Heron every day in the same section of the river.
Stay safe.
praying for you and hope you feel 100% better soon, kay, and have all you need!
