Beatrice and Barnaby

May 7, 2017 at 9:23 am by Claudia

A rainy day view of the large garden bed from our bedroom upstairs. As you can see, none of the barrels or pots have been planted. That is partly due to the endless rain, but also because for the next three nights, it’s going down to the thirties, so I don’t want to shock any new plants. As it is, I’ll have to bring in the porch plants (only a few – the ones I overwintered) each night.

What a strange spring it has been. Last night we had a big thunderstorm with pounding rain. This morning, when I woke up, it was still raining. But I think it’s stopped now.  I so want to visit a nursery, but if I buy anything, I’d have to keep it inside. We don’t have a garage where we can stash the plants. But I might visit the nursery closest to us today.

Just to look.

Cough.

There’s a new member of the family at Mockingbird Hill Cottage:

Say hello to Barnaby. Yes, I know that I named the other bunny egg cozy Barnaby but when you see the two of them together, you will understand, as I did, that the other bunny is female.

Beatrice and Barnaby. Mother and son.

You will now get different views because, like all little magical animals, their expressions seem to change depending on the angle. A case in point: Monty the Cow.

Barnaby likes to hold his mother’s hand.

Will I make another? As of last night…no. As of this morning…maybe. I made little mistakes in the sewing up that I’d like to correct, though I’m getting better at it. We’ll see.

A good way to occupy my time while it rained and rained and rained.

Happy Sunday.

Beatrice and Barnaby are adorable. You are such a talented person my friend. I hope you get a break from the rain. We’ve had some sunshine but the winds and cooler temps have worried me a bit. I think the worst has blown away and I can plant a few more things today. I am heading to church this morning, first time in weeks so I must be getting better…yay! Hugs!!

Thank you, Kathy! You’re so sweet. I don’t think the sun is going to come out today, but I hope I’m proven wrong!

You can’t help but smile…Beatrice and Barnaby are too cute for words! Enjoy your nursery visit…we had a light frost last night. If I visit a nursery…I am guaranteed to come back with at least 3 of something…I have little will power when it comes to plants. I have yet to plant my perennials! In and out of the garage they go….hopefully tomorrow I can plant them. Happy day to you! ;)

Awwwww, so cute. We had a bit of sun earlier, I pulled some weeds. My girls and I are heading off to Broomfield Wednesday, hoping for no rain thank you. Although I am prepared, I got three bright yellow umbrella just in case. One of my girls said it will be good for spotting where I have wondered off too, I do like to wonder. I will not go looking at plants yet, too tempting this early.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed as to the rain. It looks like there’s a chance of it here nearly every day this week. I might scream!

See…. I just KNEW she was a sweet little girl the very first time I saw her! My daughter had an Easter dress and little purse in that sweet lilac color when she was about 3. Maybe that was what did it for me.

We had frost last night and warnings again for tonight. Plants will have to remain inside again for another night or two. Certainly not the end of the world and we will “muddle” through it all. My kids make fun of me because when something that is out of step occurs, I always say “if this is the worst thing that happens to us today, it will be a very good day”. They roll their eyeballs, but I have heard both of them say the same thing. All about keeping perspective. But… when we have those many days in a row of rain and clouds, it can certainly get to your soul. Just getting out, even if we must run between rain drops, can be a good thing. So, I hope you do make a trip to look at some beautiful plants and flowers today, and that you enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

No frost warning yet, but it is going down to 36 degrees. And it rained off and on today – very cold!

      Time for warmer weather!

Those two are so adorable. You have many talents,Claudia .Last week when you posted the photo of your newly spruced up porch my heart skipped a beat when I saw the glider. As a ten year old my family moved from the center of the city to the suburbs where we had a garden and a porch and on that porch we had a glider!Wow! It was life changing as I could now read Nancy Drew on the porch. Also, the dandelions brought memories of my Italian grandmother with whom I would hunt for young and tender greens. We would ride on the streetcar with our shopping bags to the edge of the city to do the deed. The strange foods that my grandmother cooked(no recipes) and that none of my friends had eaten have become gourmet sensations. Oh, and the Shirley Temple doll! I’m very close to your mother’s generation but I think that we are soul sisters in many ways. Just one more before I quit this rambling.A big thank you to the reader who told us aboutEscape to the Country.xo Annette in CA

All that rain sure is making things, green, green, green. We actually had rain a couple of days ago which is kinda strange for May. Last night mostly lightning. I just love your little bunnies.

Very nice work on Beatrice and Barnaby! I’m a knitter, so I know how much work it is. And yes, it’s still raining off and on in Northern NJ, and it was 47 degrees when I got up this morning. The few plants that I’ve bought will be shoved in the garage tonight. The lawn looks like a field. Spring is out there somewhere, Claudia!

Beatrice and Barnaby are just plain adorable! You’ve done a great job with them and mother and son seems perfect . One of life’s gentle offerings that can have a impact when they bring a smile each time you look at them!

Odd spring for sure; hot, cold, and then tons of rain; the weather is as confused as most of us are these days! Your plants are looking good and ready to take off if that frost forecast will co-operate and be on the mild side. Good luck with the plants and constantly changing weather. Dianne

    Oh, those bunnies!

And tons of rain with temps in the 30s? Crazy. I feel like I’m on another planet compared to you; the endless diffs in weather between West and East U.S.A. Although, have to say, we did get another passing bit of drippy rain this morning (blink and you’ll miss it); can’t figure out what it wants to do here in SoCalif after days of scorching heat.

A bit of rain is better than none, I suppose! It’s very cold here. I’m tired of the rain. But…there’s nothing I can do about it so I’m trying for acceptance!

Beatrice and Barnaby are simply adorable! And Monty on the little bistro chair yesterday was so sweet as well. I bet they make you smile everytime you see them! We had a week of rain and cold temps so I feel your pain. Finally a dry day and sunshine here today. Spring is so temperamental!

Beatrice and Barnaby are so cute…but I’m wondering if there can be such a thing as an only-child bunny? I think a few more would be fun, no? So many egg cups and so few bunnies, just sayin’.

Beatrice and Barnaby are incredibly cute! They look like they might be headed to the garden where rumour has it there are gourmet choices such as hyacinth and day lily! Not to worry, they may be dandelion lovers and in any case their delicate little nibbles shouldn’t pose a problem. Before you set those knitting needles aside though, consider that more bunnies may allow you to give up mowing:)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
