I’m afraid you’re going to get on-the-spot photos today. Yours truly was up late watching the World Series – about two and a half hours later than my usual bedtime. More on that later!
Since the cabinet is immediately to my left, my iPhone on my right – here you go! Actually, I never get tired of seeing the cream colored McCoy pottery and the Roseville pottery. Uh oh. This gives me the urge to check out the listings for Roseville on eBay.
Let’s move on.
Right in front of me as I type this post: egg cups, Maxfield Parrish, a little thimble from Amsterdam, and my Woman Card. Deal me in.
I cleaned windows yesterday. Since it isn’t sunny today and it’s going to rain, I can’t tell how much streaking there is, but trust me, they were so dirty that I’m sure they’re breathing a collective sigh of relief.
Then I finally boxed up my books to donate to my local library. Now I just have to get them there. When there are boxes and/or stacks of books on the floor in this little cottage, space is at a premium, so it’s time to load up the car.
Game Seven was the best baseball game I’ve ever seen. Never boring, with more twists and turns than a cracking good mystery, this game had it all. The Indians and the Cubs were very evenly matched and both teams played with passion. As always in this sort of thing, the game changes and morphs because of a call from the umpire, an error in the field, a pitcher who makes mistakes or has been overused and suddenly the bases are loaded. And there was even a rain delay!
I can’t tell you how many times I said to Don, “I have to go to bed.” And then, “If it goes to extra innings, I’m going to bed.”
Well, I did go to bed, but I turned on the television in the bedroom! I couldn’t stay away. Incredible game, stellar work on the part of both teams. My heart aches for the Indians because they came from behind, never gave up, and were within one run of winning it all. And they lost at home. At the same time, I’m thrilled for the Cubs, who played their hearts out and who haven’t won a World Series since 1908. I mean, come on! Who can deny them this glorious moment?
As you know, we are longtime Red Sox fans and we know what it is to cheer on a team that supposedly has a ‘curse’ and finally, finally, see them win a World Series. It was time, more than time, for the Cubs.
Still can’t stop thinking about it this morning. And I’ll say the obvious: How lovely and healing to watch something like the World Series in the midst of an election that gets more stressful by the second! The pure joy of seeing these guys play was much needed. Thank you to the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs.
Now to get through the next 6 days.
Happy Thursday.
Debbie Price says
Did you see the commercial they played rightafter the game? It’s of a young boy, dreaming to be a Cubs player in the World Series. Watch it!
Claudia says
I didn’t. But I saw a link to it, so I’ll make sure to watch it, Debbie.
Carolyn Marie says
I agree with you. The World Series this year has been a balm amidst the worst election cycle I have ever seen. I am as happy for the Cubs asI would have been for Cleveland. Both teams and their cities deserve to celebrate!
Claudia says
I would have been happy if either team won, but I was definitely leaning Cubs because they haven’t won since 1908!
Susie Stevens says
Claudia, Finally I can leave a comment. So love seeing your McCoy pieces. Hope you and Don are doing well. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
Claudia says
So good to hear from you, Susie! Hope all is well!
Donnamae says
I was thinking of you, while watching the 9th inning on! Feeling all that stress…but thankful for it at the same time! It seemed like whenever the cameraman panned the crowd…fans were biting their nails! It did seem like a relief, to cheer on something, that wasn’t political…quite the game! I am so happy for the Cubs and their fans….108 years is too long! This Nasty Woman voted yesterday, and took her hubby and one son along. Feels good! ;)
Claudia says
So happy for the Cubs! And happy that you voted. We, of course, do not have early voting, so Tuesday it will be.
Kim says
I didn’t get home until 10 from Ukrainian dance practice so only saw the last few innings. It was 6-3 when I started and what a wonderful baseball game! We are big time baseball fans in this house as our team is the Baltimore Orioles.
My son (21) said he is so ready for the election to be over. He has been working 7 days a week from 9:15 AM until wee in the morning, as a community field organizer for our state Democratic Party. He has gained valuable experience and is on first name basis with most of our state’s elected US representatives. Considering his goals are to be a politician, it has provided a priceless education and was well worth him taking off a semester of college.
We have early voting here in Maryland but the lines have been crazy long. Since the early voting polling place is in my district, I decided I would vote on Tuesday because there is never a wait and I figure many will have already voted. I also wanted the line to be shorter for anyone who can’t vote on Tuesday.
My very non-political husband got so sick of hearing the Nameless One talk about a rigged election he signed up to be an election judge. He had to vote early so one vote cast for HRC from our family so far!
Claudia says
Good for your son, Kim! I know it’s a lot of work, but so worthwhile! And good for you for voting early and kudos to your husband for being an election judge.
Gosh, I wish we could vote early!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Oh, it was a glorious night!! And the game was all that a 7th game in the World Series should be. Including the rain delay. I am really tired today, but it was so worth it!! And, as a life-long Cubs fan, I have to say that both teams played so well, and I truly did see so many wonderful moments on both sides of the field. A night I only dreamed of, and will now never forget. And it came as a shining moment in an otherwise rather murky time. I think we all needed that.
Claudia says
I’m tired, too – 1 AM is a bit too late for me! But it was absolutely worth it. Both teams played admirably. Best 7th game in the World Series ever.
Vicki says
I watched about five minutes of that country awards show last night on TV, just skimming through, and the opening comedic sketch with Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood was on the theme of the election which is taking FOREVER to get here and, my take, how sick of it we all are and how soon we want it to be over.
Hope your day is going well, Claudia. It’s a hot one for us again today. 90s on the SoCalif coast.
Claudia says
I was secretly happy that we were watching the World Series; that way Don didn’t have any desire to turn the Country Music awards show on!
Trudy Mintun says
The first thing I did this morning after making coffee was to check and see who had won the game. I am so happy for you and them!
I really only follow our high school sports. This kids play their hearts out. I don’t really root for a lot of the suburban schools, but for us littler out-state schools.
I know this is about baseball and breaking a curse. But, sports always brings to my mind my son while he was in Cross Country. I didn’t get too many races because I was in school myself, However, this one race I was at, My son was not a leader of Cross Country, but he did OK. This day he shined. He ran like his butt was on fire. He came in first place. He broke the record for that race that had been held since the late 60’s. It still stands today. Is this mama proud? Oh yes I am!
But back to baseball it is truly a very good thing they won.
Claudia says
It was the best game I’ve ever seen, and that’s because it was such an even fight- both teams played incredibly well.
Love the story about your son. Of course you were proud!
Shanna says
I’m glad your team won. I wasn’t blessed with the sports gene, but I think I can imagine your joy. Your pottery looks so pretty in that cabinet. And the papers at the back really set off!
Claudia says
Well, I am not athletic at all, but I love baseball. And the Olympics.
Thanks, Shanna!
mary says
When your team is not in the series it can be a bit boring…I will admit I did want to say ” Cubbies win the series”. Wh doesn’t like the sound of ‘ cubbies”. First few games o’kay but that was the best game seven ..perfect what baseball should be , except reviewing the bases calls. I think it takes a bit of passion out of the game. Sometimes waiting until next year is or used to be filled with ‘ we were robbed that ump…” But still I enjoyed I went upstairs to take a shower during rain delay then watched till end.
Claudia says
We agree, Mary. Reviewing the calls takes some of the spontaneity out of the game. I mean, that’s part of the game; a bad call by the ump, a ball called a strike – then you grumble about it for a long time. And it happens to both teams, so why not stay with the way it was?
Cheryl says
It was a great game but since I’m from Cleveland, of course I wanted the Indians to win. I knew it was over for us when our coach decided to walk that player and load the bases. But, both teams played extremely well and I’m happy for the Cubs. Two great teams where they deserved to be!
Claudia says
I’m sorry your Indians didn’t win, Cheryl! But I agree – both teams played so well!
(I thought it was over when Madden changed pitchers to Lester, and then again, when he put in the closer so early in the game!)
Janet in Rochester says
Wow, Claudia. Except for the part about checking out Roseville on eBay, I could sign my OWN name to today’s post. This is exactly how I feel myself. What a roller coaster!! Thrilled for the Cubbies, heartbroken for the Indians. And thank you to BOTH teams for giving us a badly-needed respite, for a few hours each day, from the swill that has been this campaign season has become. I was texting with my nephew during the game and that rain delay just about finished us both!! I do actually think it probably was the single best/most exciting game I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying something. Now we’re back to facing 6 more days of election bilge. As Charlie Brown would say – ARRGGGHHH! Enjoy those clean windows, even on this gray day. Tis very satisfying to peer out at the world through clean glass… 🍁
Claudia says
If only we could relive the game every day up until election day, Janet! It was a simply stellar game!
melissa farley says
Best ! My team lost but not really because it was the BEST GAME EVER ! Reading all of Karin Slaughter now, thanks! Just another coping mechanism to get through the next six days.
Claudia says
Sorry about your team’s loss, Melissa! But you’re right – I think it’s unanimous – best game ever!
Glad you’re enjoying Karin Slaughter – best thing is to lose yourself in a book!
Wendy T says
Thanks to being on the West Coast, it wasn’t my bedtime yet when the game ended. Yay Cubs!
Claudia says
That’s when I miss living in California! Sometimes the time difference works in your favor!
Melanie says
I don’t have to tell you how happy (and exhausted!) we are here in Chicagoland. ;-) I agree that it was a great game for both teams. I was on pins and needles until the very end. Poor Brian had been up since 3 am for work ~ and then he ran out right after the game to Dick’s Sporting Goods to buy World Championship tshirts! We didn’t get in bed until 1 am, so Brian had been up 22 hours. And then he got up at 7 again for work. Anyway, I’m watching Jeopardy right now and then I think I’ll try to catch a nap!
Claudia says
I saw footage of everyone outside Wrigley Field. How amazing that was! Poor Brian! It’s worth it, of course, but I bet he’s looking forward to catching up on his sleep!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I loved the game!!! I was so excited the Cubs won. I voted yesterday and I am so happy to have that done. Now to wait for the results. I will be so glad when it is over! Early to bed tonight.
Claudia says
I will be too!
Nancy Blue Moon says
I’ve never been much of a sports person either Claudia…what I am though is a person who loves to see the underdog win…I can just imagine how thrilled the Cub players are and that makes me feel so happy for them…108 years is a long time to wait…Enjoy the glory…I like all of the pottery you collect but the Roseville flowers are just so gorgeous…I never get tired of seeing your collections Claudia so keep on snapping…lol..
Claudia says
I always root for the underdog! Yay Cubs! Thanks, Nancy.
Judy Shaw says
That game really was a nail-biter, wasn’t it? And a positive, much needed lift in all the negativity, too. For once it was a good thing to be in our time zone, but DD#1 and family in IL all slept through their alarm on Thurs. morning. Yay Cubs!
Claudia says
It was a nail-biter, but so completely engrossing, right up until the end!
Pat Perks says
I never tire of seeing your McCoy. I also have quite a bit. The cream is also my favorite, but we don’t have any of the same. We do have the same of other colors. I have been reading your blog for several years, but just signed up so I could comment.
