Bird Watching in the Park

May 21, 2013 at 9:04 am by Claudia

Yesterday was my day off. I did a little grocery shopping, then I walked to the park with my camera and sat on a bench for an hour.

There are lots of pigeons in the park and, contrary to the opinion of some people, I think they’re beautiful. Each bird had markedly different coloring and each was unique. This guy was the biggest of the pigeons and just a bit of a bully.

Moments later, he took off.

Coming in for a landing.

Then this little guy landed on the bench to my left.

Is he feeding a nearby family?

Then he took off.

No, it’s not mine.

All in all, a lovely time in the park.

I sweetly asked my colleagues to stop by the apartment and hold up my quilt:

On the left is Mary. She’s the Stage Manager on this production. We’ve worked together before and are good friends.

On the right is Robyn. She’s the Assistant Stage Manager.

I lament the lack of wall space in my cottage. But as I looked around this apartment with its ceilings that are at least 17 feet high, I thought it would be the perfect place to hang quilts! Too bad it would involve drilling holes – a no-no in temporary housing. Ah well.

Today is another student matinee. The director is going on for another actor who had to go out of town for the funeral of a family member. Should be interesting.

I must take a moment to acknowledge the terrible tragedy in Oklahoma. The news accounts of the tornado are gut-wrenching. The photos of  the destruction attest to its horrific power. My heart goes out to the citizens of Moore and to everyone else who has suffered inconceivable loss from this devastating tornado. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

    Hi Claudia,
I just had to write after your pictures of the pigeons. I am a grade school librarian and this year I had a small group of fifth grade girls that I did a book club with. One of the books we read was a book titled Wringer. It was about a small town contest and the challenge was to see how many pigeons could be shot. I hated the first half of the book, but the second half was wonderful. We had a lot of good discussion about since less killing of animals and humans. Another book we read was titled Saving Lily , it is a story about a group of sixth graders who raised money to buy an elephant from a really awful circus. The plan was to send Lily to a sanctuary. Once again we had wonderful discussions about animal rights. I really do not think the girls will ever attend a circus again.
I believe in the rights in all of Gods creatures and I hope that I passed just a little bit of it on to the girls.

Are you absolutely sure you don’t want to cuddle with this quilt on the couch? Beautiful on the wall, of course. But there is just something about quilts and naps. It turned out so well, hangs so nicely. No puckers. You did a great job.
Prayers for all those affected by that terrible tornado in Oklahoma.

Nope. Quilt on the couch = dog hair. And I already have quilts to cuddle with. And that afghan that I made earlier this year. This is for hanging as wall art. xo

So glad you were able to post a pic of your quilt with your friends…nice to have a human reference…size wise! Your quilt is so much larger than I previously thought…and still lovely! I love to bird watch too…my latest obsession is hummingbirds! ;)

Yes. I knew from those photos I was taking that the size wasn’t registering. This photo really helped.

I love birds….all of them. Well, maybe not vultures, but I must confess I spend an odd amount of time at our children’s zoo watching them. Lovely quilt. Reminds me of my gramma Onie’s that she gave to my mama, and when it began to fall apart, my mama sewed it into 13 stockings for her grandchildren :)

Isn’t sitting on a park bench, having your lunch break, a wonderful thing?! I used to work a block from the park in Santa Monica that is on the bluff, overlooking the ocean – I’d take my lunch and a book and unwind from the stresses of work, for an hour at any rate.

Love love love your quilt, Claudia! So much fun you had your friends hold it up for a picture, love that.

I am heartbroken to hear of the loss of life and devastation in OK yesterday. I heard a reporter speak about one of the schools upon waking this morning and it’s too too awful to take in. Thoughts and prayers going out …

Hi Claudia!! What a nice day you had for some bird watching in the park!! I love to bird watch and have many feeders up that really draw in some beautiful birds!! It is so fun to identify them all. That park really looks like a nice place to sit and watch all around you. I also love your new quilt – it will look so nice once it is done and hanging in the cottage… I was really saddened to hear about this devastation in OK. It seems all around the country our weather is becoming more severe… I will keep all in my thoughts and prayers.. such a tragedy… Francine

Yes, it does seem like the weather is getting more severe. Hurricanes in the northeast, terrible tornados, floods, tsunamis – all of it is horrifying.

Every pigeon I saw, and there were a lot of them, had distinct markings. Not one looked like the other.

Love your finished quilt top – so many beautiful colors. I look forward to following it through quilting, binding and finish!
Thank you for mentioning Oklahoma in your post – here in Oklahoma we have been brought to our knees, in shock over the loss of so many lives and in prayer for the strength to go on with the recovery and rebuilding. I’m sure everyone Oklahoman appreciates every prayer lifted up for us.

Yes, I was sitting very still and trying to be very patient. I forgot to bring my book with me, so I had nothing to do but take pictures and that turned out to be a good thing.

I just like birds period and taking photos of them. I admire birds. You got a good shot of that one in flight. As for hanging the quilts, if it isn’t heavy, you can use tacks. Many times I’ve simply made a sleeve with muslin along the back, put a few nails in the wall: end, middle, end, and stuck it up there on a curtain rod.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
