Birds and Bears

July 28, 2021 at 9:04 am by Claudia

Some photos of mama and the babies for you. If you look closely, you can see the open beak of one of the babies.

Both of the babies. One is clearly bigger than the other. You can see the fuzzy head of the other baby on the right.

These were taken two days ago. They’ve grown bigger since then.

I imagine they might fledge on the weekend, but who knows? Mama is doing everything so they’re getting less food than they would if both parents were feeding in tandem.

Yesterday’s testimony by four heroes who sacrificed to help save the lives of our elected leaders and staff as well as our democracy was very, very moving.  I hope you got a chance to see it. As to the comments of those who want to cover up the fact that there was a deadly insurrection, I’ll let you imagine the words that were coming out of my mouth.

And bravo to Simone Biles for making the decision that was not only right for her, but also for the team. She has my undying admiration.

I’m going to weed whack today. Things are very overgrown around here. It’s cooler today so it’s a good morning to get out there and do some work.

Oh, forgot to tell you…on his walk yesterday and just down the road from us, Don saw a black bear in the woods, maybe 50 feet away, and then the bear ran out of the woods and across the road! This is a very busy road and you don’t often see a bear running across it! He said it all happened so quickly that he could barely process it!

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

I have watched the Olympics in bits and pieces but have enjoyed seeing the unexpected results that happen some times. The young competitors, the 1st time at the Olympics athletes, are so happy and surprised when they do well. It is nice to see the joy in their faces and see their families and friends celebrate back at home. No matter which country it is!
I don’t like when the cameras get right into the face of the athletes – I think these athletes have enough pressure on them without the media bearing down on them. I am sure they are probably used to it but I would not be able to stand it!
Glad that Don was safe from the bear! Goodness gracious!

I feel the same way. That’s what I love about the Olympics – the unexpected!

      Stay safe, Ellen!

Our home here in Virginia is surrounded by woods, and we have already had a couple of bear sightings as they run across our yard. It’s always fun and yet a bit shocking to see one, and usually we don’t have our camera ready.

I’ve been watching bits and pieces of the Olympics. My college roommate is visiting this week, and quite frankly, we’ve been busy. I was proud of Simone Biles for making the decision withdraw and to put herself first. The team is better off, and most importantly, so is she.

I didn’t watch the hearings, but I did some reading about it. It’s about time that more of the truth comes out, no matter how painful it might be to recall.
Still dumbfounded that repubs are downplaying the whole thing, to the point of contradicting the truth. Sorry to say…I’ve come to expect it, however.

    Enjoy your day! ;)

If you can watch video of the hearings you should. They are unbelievably powerful and moving.

      Stay safe, Donna!

I couldn’t agree with you more on yesterday’s testimony and also Simone Biles. It takes a lot of guts to be in her position and make a choice like that, which had to be very difficult in many ways — and the right one.

You robin photos make me smile. VERY big!

I felt compelled to watch CNN’s full 3 hrs (it went longer but I hadn’t hit ‘record’ beyond the one segment; darn) of the committee’s coverage … because I felt a personal commitment to ‘bear witness’ to the testimony of those four brave officers. What they said was riveting; and the videos made me cry (again). I hope it was cathartic for them to have their say. Those men and their fellow officers have SUFFERED.

As terrifying as Jan 6 was, to see it go down ‘live’ on TV (can never forget it; one alarmed friend after another calling each other [in just my own small world], ‘TURN ON THE TV; THIS IS TOO MUCH’ [as in OMG, can we believe this horror is really happening]), I’m still continually shaken by ongoing revelations/facts (and yet more very-revealing videos) of that unbelievably-awful day which nearly was the end of us in America. I think on the actual day, it was almost too much to take in; to really zero in on all the ramifications. The violence was even worse than we were seeing. Maybe we were all feeling some shock.

But, clearly, as the months have gone on, and you read about or listen to any of the historians and other experts on democracy/politics speak, we’ve got the fuller ‘story’ and we’re going to get even more, which is critical for the future and our continued dissection of how on earth our country came so close to, well, Fascism, which my beloved male ancestors fought bravely against in World War II.

(I’m still learning and trying to comes to grip with any of this since January; it’s so unsettling because you can’t help but feel the monster is lurking in the bushes, waiting to pounce and devour. Except remember that the monster failed and it’ll fail once more, because the U.S. will never make the mistake again of taking anything for granted, like our freedoms and a fair election.)

It’s very ominous. Thank God we have hearings without bullies like Jim Jordan. Civil, intelligent, everything a hearing should be.

      Stay safe, Vicki.

really glad that don was safe coming up on that bear!!! do either of you carry bear spray, cellphones when out walking? or a bell/horn and a long stick? or all of the above?

sweet little bird babies and their heroic mother. :) great photos … thanks for sharing them because i’ll probably not see such things where i live …

haven’t watched a bit of the olympics for years. i would get so stressed out for the athletes that it probably wasn’t good for me (i want everyone to win. hopefully they all see themselves as what they are … winners, even without medaling).

might try to watch online some of the heroes’ testimonies about the insurrections for the reason vicki said … to bear witness again to their bravery and to some almost-unbelievable-and-never-should-have-happened history.

been another long day at work so i am heading out to visit with some family members. socially-distanced for having spent a lot of time today trying to help someone and in very close quarters with six paramedics. they undoubtably are vaccinated (so am i), but i just feel gross. talking with family will help, as will a shower and maybe knitting.

hope you are having a good night and stay safe from covid-19, the heat, bears and people who can’t face the truth.

None of the above, though we always have our cellphones with us. We’ve lived here for 15 years and we’ve only seen a black bear, from a distance, about 3 times. Very rare. And they’re afraid of us, so it’s not really a risk.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
