The Blob & the Tunnel

July 19, 2010 at 4:00 pm by Claudia

Thanks for all the lovely comments about the porch. We really love it. However, in the interest of full disclosure, I must talk about the elephant in the room – or on the porch. This is a photo of my husband taken before I left for California. You can see there are no leaves on the trees yet.

He had just come home with this exercise bike…found at the curb in a neighboring town. Yes, he’s awfully cute, but we had nowhere to put it. I will say, for the 999th time, that our house is very small. The usual conversation ensued.

“Are you going to use it?”

“Yes!”

“Okay, if you promise to use it. And you’d better cover it with a drop cloth so it doesn’t rust when it rains.”

I didn’t like the idea of this big drop cloth covered blob on the porch, but I was leaving town so I let it go.

And there it remains. Unused. It sits there, with my husband’s bike that he’s thinking of selling – under the drop cloth. You wouldn’t believe how many times I have tried to shoot something on that porch with it looming in the viewfinder. I have expressed my desire to see it disappear. I’ll keep you posted.

Around here we say the words, “in the tunnel” a lot. What is the tunnel, you ask? It is Scout’s favorite place to lie on the floor. Definition: A ‘tunnel’ is the place on the floor between one’s legs and the piece of furniture one is sitting on. When Scout indicates she wants to go in the tunnel, I have to lift my legs in the air and hold them there until she gets in place. This can be exhausting if she is especially fidgety. Or if I am working on the laptop or balancing my dinner on a tray. In fact, she’s in the tunnel right now:

I am by far the most popular person for the tunnel. Don gets the request occasionally. Me – all the time. But honestly, could you say no to that face? I sure can’t.

More soon.

Love your doggies and no, I could not say no to that cute face. We had one of those elephant bikes in our tiny bedroom. Did we ride it everyday as we said we would, of course not, it was a glorified clothes hangar and I felt very good when I sold it at a garage sale.

What a sweetheart that Scout is, I couldn’t say no to her either. Claudia, I now know what to call these “tunnel” areas in our little house too that my cats are constantly going into, back and forth, back and forth! I don’t know about the exercise bike, come winter and rainy weather, I know I’d want one since my walking will be a bit colder (not to say I’d use it though). I did do the same thing once with a treadmill, used it for my ironing and finally let it go… hence, the walking around town 2 miles a day :)
Have a great week, your porch is darling!!

Ooooooohhhhhhoooooo, sugar, you’re talkin’ to a chick that understand that. His bike!!! He uses it about once a year…MAYBE, but he had to have it. I relegated it to the storage shed, but he got it out for the camping trip. He rode it once around the campground! It’s now sitting on the front porch and I’m hoping (!) someone steals it cuz he aint’ gettin’ another one! I refuse to give it the dignity of a drape cloth, too…

Just what are we going to do with those garbage pickers? I have a huge telescope with no home hiding in one of the bedrooms upstairs. I mean this thing is 5 feet tall. Who or what does he think he is going to look at outside with this thing. Oh, me, oh my, what are we going to do with these “BOYS” and their “TOYS”?

oh, those men and their exercise machines that don’t ever get used. Thankfully we have a gym in our building in SF. And, lots of hiking in the Gold Co that there is no need for a exercise machine.

Doggies are so sweet. I love how they find their favorite places to sleep and nap.

Have you seen the screen porch Sandy (My Shabby Streamside Studio)has just built? Maybe one of those would make a great ‘exercise bike’ garage?? ;)

I agree, definately not possible to say no to that face :)

    Hi Claudia,
I have to laugh at your post. Reminds me all those exercise machines that you see in Habitat and other thrift places. I guess someone got tired of it taking up space on the porch! LOL

I couldn’t say No to that sweet little doggie face either.

I laughed all the way through this! Charlie Ross has this need to be under something. Like a quilt or blanket. If I’m lying on the bed covered with something, I must lift my legs so Charlie can get underneath and wedge himself against me. So I know precisely what you mean. At night if he wants me to lift the covers for him after lights out, he always scratches my left shoulder with his paw once and that is my cue to lift it long enough for him to scoot underneath. Of course it is just me and no one else.

    How adorable, the tunnel.

My dachshund is a burrower.. must be under a blanket when he goes to bed at night, whether it’s in his crate or under the covers with me. This must be hidden from the husband, because he “does not like a dog in his bed”… but with Rudy being about 7 lbs, we pull it off.

Nope, I couldn’t say no to Scout, either. So cute!!!

So, when you say your house is “very small”, what are we talking here? Because when we move, we will actually be LOSING 600 square feet. This is the one part I’m most unsure about….could really use some encouragement about living in small spaces!!!

My sweet black Lab, Nicky, does the same thing!!! He obviously has NO clue about how big he is… he just saunters over and starts bulldozing under my legs to burrow under and lay down on the floor. He’s 130 pounds (at least) and just plows about as if he were a poodle. Love it!

But he does as he wishes because truth is, he’s a sweet teddy bear of a dog and has my heart in the palm of his paw. ;)

Oh Claudia! You had me giggling out loud. First because my Hubby is just the same…bringing things home that I DO NOT WANT in my house. Or outside of my house. Oh I feel your pain.

And second because your description of the tunnel was so funny and no, I could not say no to that face! Awwwww!

So sorry about the blob. Your porch is so cute, I can imagine how frustrating that must be! I can’t help giggling though– he looks so happy on that thing– so proud of his find! Maybe you could paint it in your colors and glitter it. No, then it would just be a big glitter blob.

Ah, you’re such a cutie, Scout!!!

LOL, I know all about blobs!! Ours sits in the garage and although it’s out of site it takes up a great deal of the third car garage . . . the treadmill but I have to say that perhaps if we had a gorgeous porch and view like yours I may be more inclined to use it!

First of all – exercise bikes used indoors, are purse and jacket hangers… and used outdoors they are leaf, twig and dust receptors. Didn’t know that? :-0

Second, “in the tunnel, so cute! When My Howie does it to me I call it scrunching…unfortunately he also likes to scrunch up under my chin and on my chest whether I’m in bed or lying down. can you say UMPH?

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
