Blue on Blue

October 21, 2010 at 4:31 pm by Claudia

Thank you for the compassionate responses (I expected nothing less) to my last post. If I learn anything more about the mystery, I will pass it on.

I was standing in the kitchen the other day, after touching up the kitchen island with paint, and I realized that my seashell finds from Florida could no longer stay on my cake plate. Yes, they were under a glass dome….but the whole thing had somehow lost its appeal. I was on a mission to find some sort of jar to put them in. Enter Home Goods:

Timing is everything, isn’t it? There was only one glass container left in this beautiful blue. Hello! You need to come home with me. I think it was about $5. And doesn’t it go perfectly on my little table?

And there’s plenty of space left for more shells. That means I have an excuse to gather some more next time I’m down in Florida. Which may be sooner than I think. I will update you on my Mom in a future post. Suffice to say, things are complicated.

More blue, in the form of a bird:

The little nest I found the other day seems to have found a home. It seems entirely appropriate for a bird to carry her nest on her back. Maybe she’s moving and doesn’t want to go to the trouble of rebuilding?

We’ve been raking, carting tarps full of leaves to the woods, cleaning gutters, cleaning the house, getting our furnace cleaned, having the chimney experts check on our aging chimney (this house was built in 1891). Today they were here to clean the chimney, install a liner and make everything safe and sound until we someday rebuild the base of the chimney. Oh, and get a new furnace. Our old one is sadly energy inefficient.

Maybe I’ll win the lottery.

    Hi, Claudia!

Love the blue glass jar you found for your shells. I think it’s the perfect shade, and it shows them off nicely! I love shells, too, and I had a jar that I once could tell you every shell from every place I found it. Only someone accidentally mixed it up! OOPS! ;-)

I hope and pray that things will settle down with your mother. I know how it is to be far away when you have an ailing parent, and my heart goes out to you. I’m so sorry.

On a brighter note, I think you found the perfect spot for your cute nest. That blue bird is one of my favorites of your treasures. I love blue about as much as pink, possibly more, but don’t tell Beverly! ;-)

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

The nest is darling in the blue bird. We heat our old house with gas heaters from the 1930’s but they work and are very cozy. Heating old houses is a big challenge. Have a lovely weekend. hugs♥olive

Claudia I love the blue jar with your shells. That’s just the color blue I’m looking for to replace the country blue I used to use in my house. ♥

    HI CLAUDIA,
WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO GET FIX AROUND THE HOUSE. JUST WHEN YOU THINK IT IS ALL DONE, SOMETHING BREAKS DOWN.
BUT…WE GO ON AND ENJOY LIFE. I LOVE YOUR SHELLS, I COLLECT SHELLS TOO. YOUR LITTLE BLUE BIRD IS SMART, WITH THE RENT PRICES THESE DAYS I WOULD CARRY MY HOUSE ON MY BACK TOO.
HOPE YOUR MOM IS OK, PRAYERS ARE ON THEIR WAY. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND. RIZZI

The shells and the nest look great! It sounds like your house must be a good, strong, solid house to have withstood that many winters, and that you’re doing a great job of making sure it stays that way. But winning the lottery would be nice.

Love that blue jar! Such fun to walk into a shop and pick up the perfect little thing for a great price. :)

We’re working on leaves this weekend. Hoping to have the whole family over to help rake, then roast some hot dogs and marshmallows over the firepit.

This is the same lovely shade of blue as my Ball jars – I’ve collected several now and love them with the grey zinc lids.

Sweet little nest – as you say those tiny birds have amazing skills for home building…..and all with just a beak!

Hope you can use your fireplace now – nothing beats an open fire crackling in the hearth on a Winter’s night.

    Hugs – Mary

whaaaa. i don’t have a HOMEGOODS near me. boo hoo. i want one!! your shells are living better than the abandoned woman’s home. hmmmm. i would think the city would have forced her to code or something, but i guess not. wow. it is gray gardens in that house. i bet that lady has stuff that we can only imagine, but i wouldn’t trick or treat there. it is a mystery for sure.
    have a great weekend claudia.

Love the jar and I’m crazy about that bird!!! I have a couple of blue bird planters….but they aren’t as wonderful as THAT one of yours!!

What an interesting story about the “lady down the road”……sad, spooky, thought-provoking!!!

When you have time, I put up a loooooong post about the 5K run last Sat. It was quite the experience! :)

I need to be fall cleaning like you…..just have too much other stuff to do! ha ha!

Have a great weekend!!! L, Dana

Hi Claudia….I love that jar! That color blue is one of my absolute favorites. I also went back and read your previous story. Like many of your readers posted, there seems to be a house like that in every town. I have a very good friend that is an isolator. He is a single gay man who inherited his families home. He is also an alcoholic in and out of recovery. His closest friend was his dear mother who died a few years ago. He’s lost 2 siblings and has one brother left that drives him nuts…they don’t get along. If anyone comes to the door he either won’t answer or shoos them away. He is also extremely shy. I try to do what I can for him but he shuts me out too. I have a key to his house just in case no one has seen him in a while….and I took care of his cats when he used to go away. I drove him crazy until he got help for his drinking. He hated me for a while….but now thanks me…even though he struggles. But…he will always be an odd hermit like person I think. Sometimes I think he has some mental illness. Your lady could be an alcoholic or just have mental illness or both. If no one ever knocks on her door and just says “hello…I live in the neighborhood and thought I would say hi”, she will never know people care about her. It’s worth the door slamming in your face to find out.

    Your Title… Makes me think…

“Blue on Blue, heartache to heartache. Blue on blue, now that we are through.”

Do you remember that? Old time song that still pulls my strings.

Beautiful blue, my friend. You just clicked on a memory.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
