My geranium – another plant that I overwinter – finally bloomed. I had to prune it earlier in the season and the rain knocked off an earlier bud before it could open. So, knowing that rain was coming for the weekend, I moved her to a safer place on the porch until the threat passes. I think I’ve had this plant at least as long as the Boston fern, if not longer.
Monday. It rained all night and it’s still raining now. I slept in a bit because we were up later than usual. Don has an eye appointment this morning.
Lucy telling me all about her day. She insisted on replacing her sweet dress with some dungarees.
She’s right. They suit her. She’s my scrappy girl.
It was a low-key weekend. I read a lot! I’m nearly to the end of The Girl in the Eagle’s Talons. The writer who is taking over this series has done a bang-up job. She understands the characters and remains true to the essence of the storyline that Steig Larsson established many years ago. I imagine that isn’t at all easy.
Mere sent me a photo of my nephew and his girlfriend, taken when he was sworn in as a District Attorney. They swore them in as soon as the bar results were posted. And he has a trial starting this week. I am so proud of him.
Looks like there’s a tentative deal in the writers’ strike, which has been going on longer than that of the actors. I eagerly await the details. Several of my former students from Boston University are writers in Hollywood. I hope they got everything they were fighting for. And I hope the actors get the same. AI is the biggest threat, both to the writers and the actors – that, and streaming.
My brain is a bit foggy this morning as I’m still not fully awake, so I hope this all makes sense! I’m not even sure what is on the horizon for the day; more reading for sure. And some dreaded bathroom cleaning.
Rest in Peace to Terry Kirkman, a founding member of The Association – he wrote “Cherish” and “Everything that Touches You.” I got to know him through Don who knew him from his Los Angeles years. How lucky I was to “know” him. He was unfailingly kind to everyone, including me. He worked for years with people in recovery and he had a heart as big as all outdoors. I’m very sad. I was a huge fan of The Association, saw them live in concert, but I was an even bigger fan of Terry and the man he was. Rest in Peace, Terry.
Say safe.
Happy Monday.

Today sounds like a good day to read. I hope you enjoy it. As for me? Heigh ho, heigh ho . . . .

I heard there was a tentative deal with the writers….I, too, hope they get what they want and that it will support a deal with the actors getting what they want! Congratulations to your nephew…what an accomplishment! I did a lot of cleaning over the weekend, so I plan to do more reading today…..

Yes I hope the writers get everything they feel entitled to. That is a long time to go without a check. I am sure many of them are not living on a pension.
How would you pay the mortgage or the rent?
I guess do whatever you have to.
Uber, clean houses , whatever.

best wishes and prayers for don and his eye appointment. and for you both getting out … stay safe and dry!
the geranium looks beautiful; glad it bloomed for you.
same here about cleaning the bathroom … least favorite chore (tied, for me, with vacuuming)! i did about half of it saturday morning and have the bathtub yet to do. i should do that first, but procrastinate because it’s hard with my back (has anyone tried those motorized scrubbers on a stick?).
how great that one author can continue with the same feel a series of books started by another author … and that you’re enjoying them. books, pie and a rainy day sound like part of a great day to me!
had a very nice day yesterday, all spent with members of my family. before church (online), i brought out four foods for earl and the birds, read two chapters of a book and made a big batch of chili (at least sixteen servings, so some could be frozen). we went for a walk and did other exercises before going for a ride. i knit half a dishcloth, too. :) looking for something similar today and every day. might go get flu shots today, too.
hope you, don and everyone else here have a great day! stay safe.

I always leave the tub til last, as well. Very hard on my back.
Stay safe, Kathy.
Donnamae says
I have back problems too, and I’ve used a floor mop to clean my tub. The long handle saves on back strain. Hope you find a good solution for you. Take care! ;)
kathy in iowa says
great idea and glad that it helps you. i will have to try that. thanks, donnamae!
sorry that you have back trouble, too.
hope you have a very good day!

Lucy’s overalls give me the feels for whenever it was bibs were last in fashion. I believe I was still in my twenties at the time. I do remember I had many pairs, some in pastels! My uncle the dairy farmer used to tease me about them.
Good on your nephew starting in the DA’s office. I was 12 years with the law school at Marquette and know how hard he worked to get where he is. Good luck in his first courtroom experience.
Rain here today after several gloomy days. Weighing whether to feed the squirrels when their feeding trough will just get waterlogged. Then again I can hear the chipmunks out there chirping, “where are you, woman?” so I guess I’ll head out with a smaller amount. Sometimes those little buggers meet me at the opening garage door when I’m carrying their goodies out back.
Take care,
Kay
Claudia says
Yep. I had overalls, as well. I have a picture of me in them – but I have no idea where it is!
Good for you for feeding the squirrels and chipmunks!
Stay safe, Kay.

My very first date was to an Association concert. Sigh. It’s nice to know he was such a good guy, too.
After a long (fun, but long) weekend, a bit wearing, a new meds, I’m laying pretty low today too. My visiting vet came and before she arrived Lizzie put on her cloak of invisibility and went into hiding. We found her in a spot that I have no idea how SHE found it in the first place. Eventually, we dug her out, got her nails clipped and exam and had a good talk with the vet about her neuroses and strategies for better box behavior. I love my visiting vet. I think she’s as good for me as for Lizzie!
I was glad to hear about the strike and hope that the actors aren’t far behind. At Rick’s reunion we met a woman who worked for years with Jimmy B. through the Margaritaville “industry” — I sent her your two blog post links on the experiences you and Don had.
What are your best strategies for wintering geraniums in our cold climate?
Claudia says
I just bring the plant in and I don’t overwater it. That’s it.
Stay safe, Jeanie.

Sorry to hear that another voice from our past is silenced. I didn’t know much about the group or its members, but I did know that song. Unfortunately when I hear it now I am transported back to my time of morning sickness. Weird how songs and fragrances can take me back there.
Claudia says
Thanks, Shanna.
Stay safe.

I am such a huge fan of The Association. So sad that all the artists I loved in my youth are getting old…like me! Still I can hear these songs in my mind all the time. I can’t remember newer things but those songs…still know the words! Congrats to your nephew as that is such a great accomplishment. Rest up. I feel like I am always in ‘brain fog’ these days.
Claudia says
Well, with your longterm COVID, you might be, right? I know that’s one of the side effects.
Take care, my friend.
Stay safe.

I love that photo of Lucy on your lap. Those dolls have so much personality! Happy to hear about the writer’s strike ending, too, and hope the same for the actor’s strike soon. I’m very sorry to hear about Terry Kirkman. Sounds like he was a wonderful person.
Claudia says
He was. Loved by all.
Stay safe, Jenny.
Donnamae says
I’m impressed you are able to overwinter a few outdoor plants as you do.
I hope the writers get a deal that resolves their issues. Also hoping the same for the actors. Labor disputes are much more prominent lately. I am happy that union support is growing. I am convinced that’s about the only way we can settle our labor differences, and achieve more equity in labor.
I’m also a fan of The Association. That was done of my favorite music. Enjoy your evening! ;)
Claudia says
Sounds like the writers got exactly what they wanted. Hurrah! That bodes well for the actors.
Stay safe, Donnamae.

Lucy looks like a challenge! Love her overalls. Sad news about Terry Kirkman. I remember my girlfriend and I listening to the song “Cherish” over and over again back when it was a 45 rpm record. Your geranium is a gorgeous colour. Hope it will be safe on the porch. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
Terry said that Cherish came to him all at once, almost like he was channeling it. What a gorgeous song.
Stay safe, Elaine.
Kay Nickel says
I am amazed that you have had that geranium so long. What a green thumb you have. And those overalls are just adorable. Makes me want to get dolls.
You have lots of good news today. Your nephew is something else. A job the day he passes the test at the DAs office? Wow! I am so proud for you.
Yes and the writers strike coming to an end. So brave of them. What a sacrifice for so many especially the little guys in the background.
Claudia says
Yes. Bravo to the writers!
Stay safe, Kay.
