The view from my window. Gray skies, frigid temperatures, snow on the way.
Not the best weather in which to explore Brooklyn.
I had to have my coffee this morning without half and half because I haven’t had any time to shop.
Why, you ask?
Well, my bus into the city was delayed. It arrived on time at our bus station and a long line of us stood outside in the cold waiting to get on. It became clear, very quickly, that something was amiss. We could hear the bus driver yelling at someone – he was telling someone he either had to get off the bus or he would call the police. Over and over. After about five minutes, said person tried to get off the bus, fell, and hit himself on the head. He was completely and totally drunk. As he fell, his paper bag broke open and about 10 beer cans fell down the steps to the ground.
So the driver had to call the police and an ambulance.
And there we waited.
When we finally got into the city, the car service that was supposed to pick me up wasn’t there. I had informed the company manager about the delay in my arrival, but still – no town car. Again, frigid temps, with me standing outside trying to text the company manager, which necessitated removing my gloves. I actually got worried about frostbite, my fingers ached so much.
Finally, the driver came and off we headed to Brooklyn. In rush hour. On a Friday. The Friday of a holiday weekend. It took forever. I quickly realized it would have been easier to navigate to Brooklyn via the subway.
Got to the apartment building, which is very nice, and the company manager met me there.
We couldn’t get the door to the apartment open.
And, of course, I had to go to the bathroom.
Finally, after more than a bit of panic, we got in and figured out the trick to unlocking the door.
By this point, I had to be at rehearsal in a half hour, so I grabbed some food to go.
That’s why I have no half and half this morning.
Not that I subscribe to these things, but it was Friday the 13th.
Another view from the window. I’ll be pulling down the shades shortly because it’s too cold and these windows have a lot of glass.
The apartment is nice, smallish – about the size of the apartments in Hartford – and it’s owned by a guy who frequently travels for business, so he rents it out to the theater. Very guy-ish, sleek, modern, Ikea furniture. But it’s pretty quiet for a place in the city and I slept well on the bed and there’s a nice big television (though I doubt I’ll have time to watch it.)
It’s just across the street from the theater so it couldn’t be more handy, especially in this weather!
So, I’m going to get going and run to the market for a few things.
I miss my husband and doggie. You know, I really don’t like being away from home. Don told me that Scout kept standing by Don’s chair in the living room staring into the den. The den is where I hang out normally. She was looking for me.
Waaaah! I miss my little girl.
Happy Saturday.

OMG what a trying day, you better get your things and hunker down for the cold that’s coming that way. It’s blowing and freezing here today supposed to be 35 below before it’s over.
Claudia says
Terrible here, too. It’s already snowing a lot at home and now it starting snowing in NYC. I was going to try to get home tomorrow night, but I think it will be too dangerous out there, so I’ll probably have to stay here.
Doris says
Happy Valentine’s Day Claudia. Be safe and try to keep warm! Doris
Claudia says
Thank you, Doris.
Barbara W. says
Oh my, adventure (or perhaps misadventure, given the events of the day) certainly finds you.
It’s a pity about the weather – not ideal for wandering about, taking pictures. Wasn’t Brooklyn the setting for the boarding house in “Sophie’s Choice” and the school for that ’70s TV show “Welcome Back Kotter”?
Treat yourself to something nice from the market and stay warm.
Claudia says
Brookyn has been the setting for a lot of television and films, Barbara. The area I’m in is full of theaters and performing arts spaces. Pretty cool.
Barbara W. says
It sounds amazing. We had heaps of snow again last night, but the sun is shining so from my sickbed I’m watching the skiers on the nearby hill.
Sadly, even the Littlest Gish’s offering of strawberry ice cream to celebrate the day held no appeal. If you would like a miniature visual treat, check out Liberty Biberty blog to see Mercedes’ nod to Valentine’s Day. So pretty!
Chris k in Wisconsin says
Oh, Claudia! Keep those shades down as it does help. We have SO much wind today. Wind chill warnings for later today through tomorrow…..
Hope the snow is minimal there. How long do you stay? I think I remember you saying 2 weeks? Sounds like you will be quite busy so time should fly.
Don’t know if you watch SNL… but tonight they are airing the very first one from 1975 with George Carlin. And tomorrow eve is the 3 hour live special…. So cold outside, I am looking forward to hopefully being entertained!
Claudia says
Wind chill warnings for here starting tonight into tomorrow. 3 – 6 inches of snow for home, 3 – 7 inches for NYC. Yikes.
Nancy Blue Moon says
What an awful way to start your trip..and having to stand out in the cold so much..I am so glad that the theater is just across the street in this weather..The last two days I have gone out to stock us with food and bottled water…pay bills..pick up needed meds..had the oil tank filled and we have a kerosene heater in case of power outage..I can stay in from the weather for two weeks if necessary before I have another doctor’s appointment..Poor Scout is probably thinking “Where is Mom off to now?”..or maybe “Why didn’t Mom take me with her..I want to go play in the park”..lol..I am happy to hear you have a nice apartment and a bed that suits you for sleeping..I look forward to seeing pictures..Take care!
Claudia says
Poor Don, he’s still not feeling well and didn’t sleep well last night. Now he’s battling more snow and all alone!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Brrrrr! Sometimes it just all seems to go wrong! Glad you are close to the theater! I know you miss your Guy and Gal!
hugs,
Linda
Judy Clark says
Sounds like a typical Friday the thirteenth! LOL. Stay warm and safe. We are 70 today and suppose to be in low 30’s tonight. This Oklahoma weather is about to do me in.
Talk to you soon.
Judy

This New York weather is about to do ME in!
Claudia says
I really miss them, Linda.

Being away from home is never fun…You couldn’t think of a better excuse for having no half and half??? Happy Valentines Day
Claudia says
Just got the half and half, which will make coffee much better tomorrow morning.
Donnamae says
What an adventure…at least it all worked out! I can’t believe these winds here…really blustery….good day to stay inside! Stay warm…stay safe…how long are you there for this time? ;)
Claudia says
I don’t know. I’m going to try to go back and forth a bit, but I’m not sure what my schedule is.
Wendy TC says
I’m glad you got over that first day and are settling in. Oh, I know you miss your loved ones, and they miss you too! Scout will just have to be spoiled by Daddy until you get home.
Claudia says
Daddy will definitely spoil her. He had to go to the store to get something for her today and he said he’d never seen the line to the register that long.
Janet in Rochester says
Barb W’s word “misadventure” seems like the perfect one to describe your Friday the 13th. And think about it – it could have been even worse – what if they hadn’t discovered the drunk until you all were on your way? Yikes! Hope your Valentine’s Day goes far far better. How long will you be in New York? PS – poor Scoutie. She is looking for – and missing – her Mom. Poor baby… :>)
Claudia says
I’m not sure, Janet. Depends on the schedule. Depends on the weather.
Debbie says
Hope you stay safe & warm! It is freezing and so windy here that I thought my dog & I would blow away!
Claudia says
It’s pretty bad out there, Debbie.
Susie says
Claudia, That is horrid, what you had to go through. I hope things smooth out quickly. Poor Scout…. It’ sad that she kept watching the den. Bless your heart , xoxo,Susie
Claudia says
Well, not necessarily horrid, but it sure was a pain in the tush, Susie.
Vicki says
Although I could feel your pain of a drama-filled day, you gave me a chuckle with this well-written, amusing post, Claudia. Ow, I can just feel those cold fingers! I think you’re an adventurous gal, going into the city ‘by yourself,’ finding a store for some half & half, etc. It might be Brooklyn but it may as well be Manhattan, true? It’s all big-city stuff!
Trudy Mintun says
Thank you for the photos of Brooklyn. I can only imagine your relief when you finally arrived. I am glad you only have to cross the street to get to the theater.
I hope Don is feeling better before the snow comes your way again.
I know Don and Scout miss you as much as you miss them.
Regula says
Poor you! Sometimes everything goes wrong. Hopefully, you’ve got your half and half. It’s THE BEST! :-) Regula
