Calling

December 1, 2017 at 9:39 am by Claudia

A quick post today as I’m making calls to everyone who might change their vote re this Tax Scam. It is unbelievable to me that anyone would condone a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit. Or that anyone (especially those of us on Medicare) would support a bill that would take away millions of dollars from the Medicare budget. Make no mistake: this is the beginning of the GOP trying to dismantle Social Security and Medicare – which are NOT entitlements, by the way. That’s our money that we’ve contributed from every paycheck our whole working lives. Again, I have to stop here or I’ll start swearing. Just imagine what I’m saying at this moment. There’s a reason they’re trying to ram this through; they know it’s bad right down to the bone.

I made eight calls this morning and will keep calling.

Pretty photo of the living room:

The sunlight is the only thing keeping me sane at the moment.

A new leaf on the monstera. I can’t take credit for this, though, I believe it was already there in tightly furled form when I bought the plant. There’s another one on the opposite side.

As you know, my mom’s side of the family is from Canada. When I was a kid, my grandmother (who was a baker extraordinaire) made Butter Tarts. I used to have her recipe but I’ve somehow lost it – which makes me very sad. In a discussion with a friend from my hometown on Facebook, I discovered that her grandmother also made tarts and she was from Canada. So I googled them and learned that Butter Tarts are a Canadian thing. I didn’t know that they were exclusively Canadian! It makes sense, now that I think of it. Anyway, I found a couple of recipes that seem close to my grandmother’s and I’m going to try one today. I’ve actually made Gram’s recipe once before – I remember making them for Don. So where the heck is the recipe card???

Fingers crossed. I loved her tarts, which were very rich! Thought I’d bake some and take a few over to The Boys, which is what I’m now calling Rick and Doug. Don has requested one, as well. Two days and counting and he’ll be home!

Happy Friday.

I also checked out recipes online for the butter tarts. I’d never heard of them, but they look delicious—and sound like mini pecan pies, same filling with or without pecans or walnuts and raisins, sometimes. What was in your Grandma’s filling?

That tax bill is making my stomach churn and my blood boil! What insanity is in charge in DC!

Gram always used raisins, which is what I will be using.

I keep hearing rumors of Pence news later today. Please let it happen before he can cast the deciding vote on the Tax Scam.

I am making calls as well, especially to Republicans! Those tarts look like what we use to call “Pecan Tassies”….. there were several types of tassies we baked for parties, including savories!

Ditto, ditto and DITTO on all the political stuff! I’ve been tweeting, e-mailing, signing petitions, sending texts, calling pols yadda yadda on this too. We have to – the Resistance is not going to give up on anything! We know now what we can do! I didn’t realize we could call anyone except on reps though. I’m lucky – both my Congressional reps & my US Senators are both Dems – and smart enough to know this bill is UTTER CRUD. Unless, of course, you’re a billionaire. You go girl! I’ll be glad to call other Congress people other than my own – if it counts. Does anyone know if this is the case? Usually I’m asked for my address, zip etc. Oh and hey, if you hit on your grandmother’s Butter Tart recipe, would you be willing to share it? No one bakes like the Brits, IMO at least. I love shortbread myself, and have a great recipe from my mother’s 2nd best friend [the wife of my Dad’s BEST friend] who was also from Canada [Scottish ancestry]. They were melt-in-your-mouth luscious!! Have a great weekend – and Peace. 🥟

With all the crap going on ~~ butter tarts, shortbread, chocolate chips, oatmeal, gingersnaps, etc. etc. all seem a bit like antidotes to the mess. I just m in shameful awe of what this country is becoming. I also don’t understand how those who voted AGAINST the health care bill can now vote FOR this hot mess. I guess it all comes down to the contributors and who owns them. As it always is…… we follow the money to understand. And with this travesty, the money is all the more telling. We continue to call and email. I am so tired of living in a country where we have to FIGHT for things like health care and fairness in taxation which should be “givens”. I spend most of the day wandering the house shaking my head in disbelief. But, it is all too real. Hope the rest of this day is better. However, I don’t have much faith in that being the case……

Calling until my finger is a nub. I can’t believe this travesty of a bill, and I feel so impotent in the face of it—-NOT my favorite feeling.

My grandparents (on my mother’s side) were from Canada as well (naturalized citizens before my Mom was born.) My son is now studying in Montreal and enjoying connecting so many family dots. I do not have a good recipe for butter tarts, so I will be interested in seeing what your search turns up. We are heading up to Quebec City for an early Christmas next week, and hope to figure out lots of Canadian Christmas traditions we might have missed along the way.

Back to the calls—-Peace, Leslie P.

Claudia, There is no way I am for this crazy tax thing. It will certainly help rich business owners. Trump maybe thinking of when he goes back to the family business after he leaves office. It would be so nice for him. I am all for keeping jobs in America…but a huge(As Trump likes to say ) tax cut for the rich isn’t the answer really. Move over my turn to cuss. LOL. Blessings to all of us who “earned “our Soc.sec. and medicare. xoxo, Susie

The recipe card is slipped inside an old recipe book. Unless of course if you kept it in a drawer with too much stuff then it might of slipped behind the drawer. I had that happened once. ;)

Claudia, so happy to share my grandmother’s butter tart recipe.

        1 cup currents
        1 cup brown sugar
        2 beaten eggs
        2 tbsp butter
        1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup finally chopped pecans (not in her original recipe)

Scald currents with boiling water, drain and cool slightly
        Add vanilla and butter
        Add sugar and beaten eggs
        Spoon into tart shells

Bake 375 for 15-18 minutes depending on the oven
Makes 12 large ot 24 small tarts

        Enjoy!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
