Getting Away Helps

January 9, 2011 at 12:41 pm by Claudia

I’m not one to let a somewhat sad blog post linger too long on MHC. I’m still battling the blues a bit. Yesterday, Don and I decided to get out of Dodge for a few hours. That helped enormously. It was cold and gray but beautiful at the same time. We drove south to a little town we used to visit much more frequently when we lived in our rental cottage. Cold Spring is situated right on the Hudson and is charming.

In the summer time this little town is packed with visitors but yesterday we had it almost to ourselves. We decided to grab some lunch at a favorite restaurant, The Foundry. It’s funky and wonderful – my kind of place. (I’ve never been one who is drawn to elegant restaurants. I like warm, inviting, slightly off-beat places.) I wanted to stand and applaud when I saw this message on their chalkboard:

We ordered our favorite dish, Lentil Cakes. I cannot tell you how much I love these.

I don’t know how they do it, but they are scrumptious. Several years ago we asked the chef what he used when making them and he reeled off a list of ingredients. We tried to recreate them and failed miserably.

Cold Spring has lots of wonderful Victorian architecture. Some day (when it is considerably warmer) I’ll take lots of photos of the wonderful buildings on Main Street. I did manage to take this photo.

And this one of the very icy Hudson River.

As we drove home, we saw an Ice Breaker chugging down the river, clearing a lane for river traffic.

There are several antique shops in Cold Spring and we ran into one that has a little area with vintage clothing. I had seen this hat when we were there a few months ago. I wanted it then but didn’t buy it. When I saw that it was still there, I took it as a sign. It was designed by Hattie Carnegie – a famous millinery and clothing designer who died in 1956. I think it’s fabulous!

Wish I had a hat stand…I can see Jean Arthur wearing this in a Frank Capra movie.

Gaze upon that wonderful detail. The hat is in such perfect condition. Here’s the label inside:

Whoever wore this little number had a smaller head than me. Who can I get to model it? Let’s see…

Ah, the famous model with the one word name – Scout.  Can we see another angle?

Perfect.

Counting Sheep

May 18, 2010 at 8:41 pm by Claudia

I was given a special mission today. Drive to Old Towne Orange, find adorable little vintage sheep from previous post, buy 3 for my sister and 1 for me (thanks, Mer), bring them back to MHC West. Mission accepted. Since today’s rehearsals didn’t really require my presence, I decided this was the day. Luckily, the little sheep were still there. Mission accomplished.

Could they be any cuter? They have their original paper collars with ‘Germany’ stamped on them. I’ve done some research – they are called German woolly stick leg sheep or German Putz sheep. They were made in Germany in the early part of the 20th century for putz (landscape) scenes. Pennsylvania Dutch and Moravian families made little putz scenes at Christmas. These sheep are about 2″ high and 2″ from tail to head.

A tad blurry -but there is the collar stamped ‘Germany.’ One of this sheep’s eyes has worn off.

Meredith – I’m taking the sheep with the aqua collar, if it’s all right with you. Thank you to Jillian of Bella Rosa Antiques who left a comment telling me I should snap them up. Apparently the legs are fragile and are often broken – so to find them in good condition is rare.

Lori of My Faerie Window says that sheep like hats…. So I am going to make a little hat for my sheep. I’ll post photos when I have something wearable.

I promised I would share photos of the sale at the Urban Barn. There are quite a few, so I will spread them over a few posts. I will keep my comments to a minimum.

Want Vintage Dress Form. Badly.

By the way, while I was typing away just now, I felt an earthquake. Just a tad unsettling. The local news just confirmed that we had a 5.1 quake. And we can expect more in the ‘near future.’

Gulp.

More photos in the next post.

Antiquing in Orange, Part 2

May 11, 2010 at 8:00 pm by Claudia

Hello friends – I thought I would continue our little trip to Country Roads Antiques.

Fabulous urns, pots and mantel.

This was the most fabulous industrial-look space. And more lockers!

Slightly blurry photo from when my camera was on the wrong setting – but I fell in love with the colors on this globe. It was on a floor stand. Gorgeous.

Marsha, this mantel setting reminds me of you!

Lots of fun, big things in this space. The statue had a rosary around her neck. I love the organ pipes on top of the white cabinet. Wouldn’t they make a wonderful decorating statement?

There were 2 of these chairs. I wanted them. Badly. Wouldn’t they look just perfect on the porch at Mockingbird Hill Cottage? Love the design, the metal, the chippy paint – everything.

This huge piece came out of an old post office. I bet all of you with studios would love this amount of great storage.

I took a picture of this china because the design reminded me of the china I bought recently. It is a different pattern, but the blue color, the gold trim and the flowers are very much like my set.

If you are ever in the area, you should definitely make a visit to this shop. You will love the incredible variety of vintage items. The prices seemed a bit high to me. Everything I looked at seemed to be priced a minimum of $10 – $15 more than I would see similar items priced elsewhere, including San Diego. I know pricing varies regionally (remember the huge mark-up I found on McCoy in the wealthy area of Long Island?) However, like many of you, I’ve been collecting for years and know a great deal about certain vintage pieces. I know what they are worth…and I just can’t spend more than that. Of course, if I was independently wealthy, it would be another story!

For example, do you remember this piece I bought a few months back?

I can’t remember exactly what I paid, but it was no more than $12. The same little spice rack was in a booth with a price of $32. I’m on a budget this year so I ended up buying only one thing and I found it in another shop (more photos in the next day or two.)

Koala update: I’ve seen my little friend a couple more times. He’s usually snoozing early in the morning or in the early evening. Today, I didn’t see him. I was disappointed!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
