Autumn

October 18, 2011 at 6:00 am by Claudia

Our Maple tree is losing its leaves at a fast pace. I fear that the endless rains and wind we have had over the past few months have left their mark on our Autumn. The colors are not as vivid as usual. I do love the crunch of leaves under my feet as I walk through the yard.

Monday was a beautiful day, with a slight breeze and that brilliant fall light that is so distinctive.

Because I was ill during the summer, I didn’t plant my zinnia seeds until rather late. Much to my delight, the zinnias have provided some welcome autumn blooms (although some critter has been munching those leaves.)

How is Autumn in your neck of the woods?

Pumpkins, Color & an Aching Back

October 24, 2010 at 11:53 am by Claudia

Imagine a woman who simply wanted to clean the dirty siding on the far side of her house. There she is, bucket of water and bleach by her side, long handled brush in hand, working away at a task she has put off far too long. Lots of trips back to the inside of the house in order to dump the dirty water, then back outside to refill the bucket. As she blithely walks on the uneven ground, she steps in a hole, twists her body and falls to the ground, thereby straining the muscles near her right knee and badly wrenching her already problematical lower back.

Well, obviously that’s me. The knee is all better but my back? Not so much. I’m walking around like an old woman. Sitting makes it worse, standing eases the pain. Last night, I watched the last hour of the baseball game flat on my back on the floor. Right now, I’m wearing my flannel pajamas, an old shawl that I knit a few years back and a heating pad on my back. The pain is getting to me, yes, but mostly I’m just ticked off that I am so incapacitated. I don’t do incapacitated well.

So let’s look at my new pumpkins. I did manage to get out yesterday to buy some yarn – my need to make something during the colder weather has taken over. I’m going to crochet a throw for the den. On the way home, I stopped for some cider donuts (husband’s request) and I saw these neat pumpkins.

They’re called Cheese Pumpkins. The color and funky shape called to me. I was going to buy one but I was using my debit card and a $10 minimum was required. So I bought two. There is nary an orange pumpkin in sight this year at Mockingbird Hill Cottage. I’m loving this more subdued, subtle coloring. And I have to thank Tracie for jump starting this with her gift of 3 white pumpkins.

Don’t you just love that stem?

In other news, Don shaved off his mustache and goatee the other day and it took me 3 days to notice the change. Does anyone else have this problem? He was patiently waiting 3 whole days for me to discover and comment on the new look and I didn’t come through. See? I always tell him that it doesn’t matter to me whether he has a beard or not.  Obviously, I proved my point.

One more photo of our trees in their fall colors:

Have a wonderful Sunday. Me? I’ll just be hanging around with my heating pad.

Saturday Outing

October 3, 2010 at 8:47 am by Claudia

The storms of Thursday and Friday gave way to clear skies and sunshine on Saturday. Autumn in the Northeast is truly beautiful. I needed to get out of the house, so husband and I took a little drive to a neighboring town. Very old and charming, this area is home to lots of NYC weekenders.  It’s just a stone’s throw from where we live.

There’s a historic canal in the middle of town,
With moss-covered stairs,
And still, leafy water. (Who is that couple?)
Who knew? (I’m still pondering the strange syntax and punctuation choices on this sign.)

There was a small antique sale taking place in a little field and we found a very inexpensive treasure. In a box of old tins, I was drawn to a shallow tin in a pale Jadite green and yellow. When I pulled it out, this is what I saw:

Hand-painted, no doubt, with a vintage decal in the center.  Even before we flipped it over, husband recognized it as an old movie film canister.

Sort of perfect for us, don’t you think? It’s now sitting in its new home on the coffee table.I hope you’ve had a good weekend. Husband is playing his music at an Apple Festival this morning, I am going to prep the kitchen table for painting. There are many leaves to rake and grass to mow and my Red Sox are playing their last game for the season. Saddled with injuries to half their starting line-up, they’ve had a tough time of it this year. But, scrappy as ever and blessed with a fantastic manager, they hung on until almost the last minute. After today, I must cheer for the Tampa Bay Rays (sister’s team.) Go Sox! Go Rays!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
