Potpourri on Sunday

August 21, 2022 at 8:44 am by Claudia

• This is a wildflower/weed that is growing on the edge of the funky patio. It’s easily 4-5 feet tall. There are a few more in the memorial garden. It’s just started blooming and the flowers are a subtle pale brown. Aster family? I’m not sure. This year, I left a lot of what-is-this plants alone because I was curious about them. I’m glad I did because the wildflowers are hardy and seem to be withstanding the heat.

I haven’t done any research as to its name, but I like it.

• I hear fewer birds singing at this point in the summer and it always makes me sad. The past several mornings, however, I’ve heard the call of a mourning dove. My favorite bird. My favorite call. That is a lovely way to start the day.

• This morning, while sitting in the den, I heard a bird call that was so loud I actually thought it might be in the room with me. In actuality, it was right outside the open window but danged if I could see the bird. A completely different call than I’ve ever heard before. A mystery.

• Also, this morning while sitting in the den – I heard this loud whirring sound. I wondered if it was some sort of vehicle coming down the road from a long way off. As I turned around to look, there was a hummingbird hovering and looking in the window. That sound was the hummingbird’s wings. I still can’t believe how loud it was. Fortunately, it’s a quiet Sunday morning, so I was able to hear that whirr without any competition from traffic. Amazing.

• And finally, we have a cricket living somewhere in the office. Upstairs. How did it get there? I’ve tried to rescue him a few times, but I can never find him. At first, he was over by the window. Now he’s in the corner near my desk – an area that’s so full of ‘stuff’ that I’ll never find him.

Okay, my friends. Time for more coffee.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

A Nest Duplex

July 8, 2022 at 8:22 am by Claudia

The robin’s nest that I removed (and put back) turns out to be two nests, one built on the other. They’re completely attached and the whole thing is a marvel. This nest is “nestled” in the climbing hydrangea on the shed.

It was not at all easy to get it back in there, but I think I did it. I’ll check on it today. But, back to the nests, here’s another view:

Extraordinary. How do they do it? Beautifully constructed, neat, tight as a drum. A nest duplex.

The nest would sometimes slip down in the branches, which is why – I think – the other nest is in a different position.

Gorgeous day today – I think it’s time to do a little mowing.

We stayed up way too late last night watching the season final of Stranger Things. Unbelievable! We had made a vow to stop halfway through and finish it off tonight, but it was so gripping that we quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen.

Now we have to find something new to watch.

I’m just about finished with my puzzle. I’ll take a picture of it when I’m done. Another one is arriving today. I guess I’ve become an all-seasons puzzle solver! It’s my Zen.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

A Visit

June 12, 2022 at 8:46 am by Claudia

A little bit of wonder for you this morning.

Look closely. A small fawn is investigating one of my potted plants. A beautiful little baby.

Mama saw me as I stood in the kitchen taking this picture, so they were soon gone. I posted it on IG and my neighbor commented, wondering if they were the same pair that had been hanging out near her house. As they took off toward her meadow, I think they are.

Oh, such sweetness.

This morning the Carolina wren pair that were scared off when the trailer dollhouse was knocked over and hanging by a thread, came back. (They had opted to nest across the street on my neighbor’s property. I could hear them singing every day.) They were clearly scouting for their next nest. They sang on the porch and flew around, concentrating on my purple hanging plant. Ummm….no.

Then a while later, they turned up on the maple tree and one of them went in and out of the trailer.

Dare I hope?

I keep having this urge to push the nesting material away from the opening to where it probably was before the house got tilted. But Don says to leave it alone, that the birds will fix it up if they want to nest there. He’s probably right.

All this and three bunny sightings – two yesterday and one this morning.

It’s going to rain today.

I donated three bags of books to the library yesterday and I’ll be donating more next week. I have SO many books around here, and I have no problems letting go of some of them. Many of them, of course, I would never consider donating. But I only have so much shelf space. Next up: some older decorating books that I have not cracked open in years. Reward: others get to enjoy them and I have more shelf space available.

I finished the Elizabeth George and have now started the next in the Slough House series by Mick Herron – Real Tigers. What a joy he is to read!

Don reinstalled a clothesline outside, and I hung the sheets out to dry last week. They smelled so fresh! Since rain is on the docket for today, I’ll wash them tomorrow so I can hang them on the line.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
