Ten Years of Blogging

February 17, 2018 at 8:00 am by Claudia

Ten years ago on this date, I tentatively wrote my first post on this virtual ‘thing’ I thought was cool, but knew very little about. It was a very early version of Blogger and danged if I could figure out how to post words and a photo at the same time.

So I introduced myself and the blog. I hit ‘Post.’ Then, when I figured it out, I posted a photo on a separate post.

And that was the beginning of this blog. My husband was my biggest supporter, telling me every day leading up to that first post to ‘Stop talking about it and do  it!” He’s still my biggest supporter, telling everyone we meet how wonderful my blog is, what a amazing group of readers I have (true, that) and that I’ve been published 3 times. I get embarrassed, but gosh darn it, I love that he’s proud of me and my blog.

What would I do without him?

In the beginning, I wrote about 3 times a week. Sometimes less. Sometimes more. About 7 years ago, I started to post every day. To be honest, those were tough times for us financially, and the impulse to post every day was to get more hits and, therefore, more ad income. But a funny thing happened. I grew to love the discipline of it, the challenge of finding something to write about every day, even on those days when the last thing I wanted to do was write. It was good for me. It became part of my morning ritual. Since then, I’ve missed very few posts and those I’ve missed have largely been due, sadly, to loss. My father-in-law. Riley. My mother. My father. Scout.

The intentions I had when I started the blog remain the same today: to share my life here in our little cottage in the country, to talk frankly about my passions, my fears, our ups and downs, to write about animals, about birds, about flowers and trees and butterflies and insects, about my work as a coach, about my husband, my family, books, reading, collecting, decorating, photography, handwork, and my passionate pleas for our democracy and kindness and tolerance and gun control and animal rights…I’m sure there’s more.

I’m at a good place with the blog and I’ve written about that fairly recently. It is what it is, and I don’t say that in anything but a happy and peaceful way. I’m done chasing something that I found I never really wanted. I don’t care about huge ‘numbers’ or anything like that. I have never been a niche blogger – I would be bored to tears writing about just one thing!

I am who I am and I like who I am. I like this blog. I like you.

Readers have come and gone. Some have been here a very long time, some less, and some are newer readers. Some left in a huff when I wrote bout the upcoming election and my fears about the Republican candidate. Those fears, and much worse, have come true. Anyway, everyone is free to come and go, to read or not read.

I’ll just keep speaking from my heart. It it’s controversial, so be it, thought to be honest, that happens rarely.

Ten years! Except for my freelance coaching work, which has been ongoing for over 30 years, I’ve never held a job that long. I worked in an office in Detroit for 7 years before I made the decision to change my life and go to grad school. I taught at Boston University for 5 years. I taught at the University of San Diego/Old Globe for 8 years. Blogging for 10 years? A miracle!

Back to you.

The friends I have made through this blog, the kindness of my readers, the times when life has been tough for me and you have responded in ways that made me cry and thank the heavens for your presence, the times you’ve made me laugh and the many times you’ve shared wise counsel? Priceless.

Thank you. The pleasure is all mine.

Happy Saturday.

A Hurried Tuesday Post

January 23, 2018 at 10:41 am by Claudia

I’m writing this in a hurry! My host has been having server problems for the past three days, which leaves me unable to access the blog for hours at a time. They’re working on it, of course, but my patience is wearing thin. This is normally not a problem – my hosting service is pretty darned excellent. But if you have problems getting on the blog, that’s why. Hang in there! (I say this to myself, as well.)

The drive home from the city was very easy. I think my uneasiness about it was due to the fact that I hadn’t done it in a long while. It was a piece of cake. I made good time and was home by 11 am. It’s been raining heavily since yesterday afternoon, so I didn’t come home to sunny skies, but then again, it’s raining in the city as well.

I went back to The Sill on Sunday to buy another ZZ plant for my desk upstairs in the office. And then I saw this:

It’s a sansevieria (there are several different varieties.) I fell in love with the spiky cylindrical leaves. They aren’t flat like the sansevieria I have in the kitchen. They’re puffy cylinders and I’m fascinated by the way the new shoots grow. Don was equally fascinated so he got one for the apartment.

I’m waiting for a break in the rain to run to the grocery store. That’s my exciting agenda for the day. It’s good to be home but I’d like some sun, please!

Selfie in Central Park.

Happy Tuesday.

Potpourri on Wednesday

December 6, 2017 at 9:09 am by Claudia

• Inspired by this book,

which is a wonderful series of “Portraits of the lives & homes of eccentric, eclectic & free-spirited bohemians,” I took some shots of the den this morning, not doing anything to brighten the photos, to make it look sunnier than it is. The den is always a bit moody, surrounded on two sides by our covered porch which keeps it in shadow much of the day. Since we take two steps down into the den, all of this works to make it a cozy, sunken retreat.

There are stacks of books on the coffee table, on the floor in front of the china cabinet, on the table to my left and on the bookshelves.

This is the room in our home that seems the most cozy-British-cottage in atmosphere and appearance. The sofa is old and slip-covered, there are books and reading lamps, there are piles of throws in a basket, an old wicker ottoman. There’s china and pottery, the dollhouse sits in a corner and then there’s the television, as well.

It’s always been a difficult space to capture in a photograph, for not only is it somewhat dark and moody, there are windows on three of the walls. Rather than getting frustrated, I’ve decided to embrace it and go for highlight and shadow. As is.

• I’m still under the weather and I’m getting restless. I don’t like sitting still for very long. Lots of nose blowing and coughing. I blame Don for this, though he says it’s been too long since he was sick to blame it on him. But I came down with it last Friday and that was less than a week since I had left Chicago.

It’s your fault, Don.

• Yesterday, we woke up to all four pilot lights out on Stella . We didn’t know if something was wrong with her, or with the connection to the propane, or if we’d run out.

We ended up being out of propane, which was rather shocking because we thought it would last longer than it did. But Stella is a big girl and Gino, our oil and propane guy, said that some of his clients who have bigger stoves that are hooked up to propane, like, for example, Vikings, go through a lot of it surprisingly quickly. So now we’ll make an adjustment in our propane delivery. Learning curve. We did have them check again to make sure there are no leaks and there are none.

• If you’ve been reading the blog lately and thinking: “Oh good! There are no more ads on the blog!” let me assure you, there are – now. I was in contact with BlogHer yesterday because of something else and I discovered that I had no ad income for the past two months…what?? And then, when I investigated further, I realized I couldn’t see any ads on my blog. Back story: I am usually on what is called the back end of the blog, writing posts, answering comments, etc., and I don’t always look at the front end – the page you see. And sometimes, during the course of the day, I have an ad blocker on for some sites I visit. Also, since we’re feeling less financially insecure lately, I haven’t been monitoring my monthly income on BlogHer. I’ve seen the monthly deposit go into my checking account and have been happy with the amount.

Anyway, it’s all been resolved. The ads are back. I’m going to be better at checking on things. BlogHer was great about it. There might be a day when I no longer have them, but for now, they help pay for the costs of maintaining this blog.

• Every day I discover something else that we wouldn’t be able to deduct on our income taxes with this horrific bill. Today it was Don’s union dues. Which begs the question, would I be able to deduct the expenses of maintaining my blog to balance out ad income? I wonder. I already know I won’t be able to deduct some expenses that go with being on the road. This will be very tough on us because we are freelancers.

Keep making your calls. I called (with a croaking voice) my Representative yesterday, and I emailed him twice. And I’ll keep bugging the crap out of him because this bill will be very hard on New Yorkers, who already pay a lot in property taxes and, of course, they want to keep that from being a deduction, as well. In other words, anything and everything that helps us get by, they want to take away.

Don’t get me started on what this vile man is doing to national treasures in Utah. They belong to us, by the way. So when I read words like this from Interior Secretary, Ryan Zinke – The land is being returned to the people! – I cry foul. It already is ours. What he wants to do is drill and frack and let corporations make money off of it and take away sacred sites that belong to us and that have deep and powerful meaning to Native Americans.

Please Mueller, do your thing, but do it quickly.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
