The Tote Bag & Copyrights (Two Completely Different Topics)

March 8, 2015 at 10:12 am by Claudia

You remember my bag, right?

The one that Don gave me for Christmas? The one I’d been seeking for years? The one that would hold all the things that I use when I’m on the road coaching?

3-8 favorite bag

My recent trip into the city to work and coach put it to its first big test and I am happy to report it passed with flying colors.

I’ve found my perfect bag after 30+ years of searching. It’s never too late, my friends.

When I traveled to the city, I had a small rolling suitcase and this bag. That was it. In the bag?

My laptop
My Kindle
My big old fat wallet
A case full of pencils, pens, and a sharpener
A hardback book
A paperback book with maps of Manhattan
A little case with a mirror, some makeup, lipstick
My cellphone
My earbuds and the chargers for my phone, my laptop charger/cords
My little book with all my passwords and blog information
A brush
A comb
Assorted pieces of paper with info for my trip from Manhattan to Brooklyn
Lunch

Yes, it was heavy, but it worked beautifully. This bag is sturdy and well-constructed. It zips closed, which I found extremely helpful on snowy days in Brooklyn. I use it as an everyday bag, too, but the main reason for getting it was my work.

I LOVE IT.

3-8 favorite bag 2

For those of you who missed the initial post about this bag, it’s from Levenger and it’s the St. Tropez Leather Tote Bag. Right now it’s full price, and for me, that’s too pricey. But it does go on sale. Don got it for me when it was on sale for 40% off and I know some of you also purchased it at that time. It was worth every penny. This baby will last for years.

And now, a little warning for those of you who blog. I belong to a group of bloggers who share information and tips and there was a recent post about copyright infringement. One blogger received a legal notice that she was going to be sued for using an image she found on the web that was copyrighted. In other words, she used a photo that someone else owned the copyright to. She didn’t do it on purpose and was in a panic, as I would be in her situation. In the course of the discussion, others stepped forward with legal information and, in some cases, their own horror stories about copyright law.

I don’t know about you, but I see bloggers pulling photos from elsewhere on the web all of the time. That includes Pinterest, by the way. Unless you have permission in writing, you cannot use photos or graphics other than your own. Simply citing a source won’t do it. You have to have clear permission from the source. There are, apparently, people who scour the web looking for these infringements. That’s what they do. And believe me, you don’t want to be on the receiving end of a registered letter informing you of legal action.

That’s why I never use anyone else’s photos on this blog. I don’t grab photos from other sources in order to do a decorating or DIY post, for example. I don’t grab photos from Pinterest for the same reason. Unless you are willing to write the source for each photo and get permission to use that photo and/or have paid for the use of the photo, you should stop using them. You can’t just cite the source and assume that’s enough.

Okay. I just felt it very important to share that information with you. It’s all too easy to think everything we see on the web is free for the taking. It isn’t.

Last night we watched a little of Dr. Strangelove  and all of Roman Holiday. Sigh. Two of my favorite movies. And today on TCM? One of my all-time favorites, My Favorite Year. It’s a little gem of a movie with a performance by Peter O’Toole that is exquisite.

Happy Sunday.

A Blogging Anniversary

August 25, 2013 at 8:53 am by Claudia

leafinbirdbath

I saw this little leaf in my birdbath when I was home last week. Autumn is around the corner.

I’m not ready for it yet.

I’m celebrating a little anniversary of sorts. It was one year ago today that I stationed myself at my computer, completed the necessary final steps and made the transfer from Blogger to WordPress. I was nervous. I had already designed my new site and had been ready to move about 6 days earlier, but that was the week that Riley died. Grief and tears took over for several days. Finally, needing something to focus on other than my grief, I decided to go for it. I had studied and researched and meticulously followed each and every step in the book, How to Move from Blogger to WordPress, so I felt pretty confident it would all work out.

It did. Everything went smoothly.

Here’s what I love about self-hosted WordPress:

♥    I own my content, including every photo that I have posted since the move
♥    The possibilities for design and content are endless; you can create a custom look and design due to WP’s flexibility
♥    In that same vein, there are plugins available for just about anything you can think of that give you many more options for design and content
♥    Support, via my host (24 hours a day with a real person on the other end of the phone line,) WordPress, and StudioPress (the designer of my themes), is excellent and ever-present
♥    Security. I was hacked four times on Blogger. No one could help me. The Blogger Forum was useless. Whether you feel the need or not, there are free security plugins available. There are also paid security options with companies that specialize in WordPress.
♥    If you’re interested in that sort of thing, there is much better SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
♥    In my humble opinion, a much more user-friendly way in which to write a post and add photos. I really love it. A lot.

I’m so glad I made the move; I haven’t regretted it for one instant. I didn’t use a designer. I designed this site all by myself. I’m proud of it. I learned a lot about coding, though I’m far from an expert. I like to learn new things. It keeps my mind sharp.

I know that it isn’t for everyone. Most everyone I know, however, has benefitted from the move to WP. I sure have. I never felt or experienced a loss of readers; quite the contrary, my readership grew. Since my blog is about my life, the content didn’t change, the focus of my blog and my writing didn’t change, and neither did the community that I am humbly a part of and which consists of bloggers from all sorts of blogging platforms. Variety is the spice of life!

There’s a blogging platform out there to fit everyone’s taste and/or needs. WordPress has turned out to be the perfect fit for me.

On another topic, I have a book giveaway going on this week. Scroll down if you haven’t read the post and want to enter. I really liked Mystery Girl. But I want to mention that in its world of off-beat characters and in the mystery that the protagonist is trying to solve, there are descriptions of bad porn movies – they figure prominently in the plot. Some of the language is rather graphic. I just wanted to give you a heads up, in case you’ve entered the giveaway and might find that objectionable. If you do, let me know and I won’t include you in the pool of entrants.

Just thought I should include that information!

Happy Sunday.

Chatty On A Friday

March 22, 2013 at 8:49 am by Claudia

cupboarc

• Some unwelcome snow requires a cheery addition to the kitchen. I made a garland to hang on the cupboard. (I have the same garland in my shop.) I think I will make some more and change out the colors according to my whim of the moment. Right now, as I write this, the morning sun is shining on the cupboard and it’s as if a spotlight has been aimed right at the garland. Ahhhh.

• ‘Chatty’ reminds me of a doll from my childhood – Chatty Cathy. Remember her? I never owned a Chatty Cathy, but I had friends who did. It was a kick pulling that string and hearing her talk. Did any of you own one?

• Scout thanks you for all your kind comments on her post. She knew you would understand. At the moment, she’s in the tunnel having her ‘I just got up after a long night’s sleep, went outside to take care of business and now I’m sleepy’ morning nap. Writing a blog post leaves her physically and emotionally spent.

• Don thanks you for your kind words, too. We managed to fax all the necessary paperwork yesterday – not easy with our slightly wonky fax machine. But it’s done and now he’s waiting for the script to arrive. Since this is for American Experience, the script will be part narration, part documentary, part re-enactment. We’ve seen a photo of the man Don is portraying and he looks a lot like him. The producers must have loved seeing Don walk in the door for his audition!

Yes, I wish I could tag along. But, as you know, we freelance and to say our budget is tight would be a huge understatement. A round-trip flight to Prague? No. Have to pay the mortgage. It’s okay. I’m so excited for Don that it doesn’t matter.

• Blogkeeping: I wrote about the demise of Google Reader last week. I set up Google Reader quite a long time ago but I didn’t really use it. I tend to follow blogs in a variety of ways. I have my blog roll, which can be accessed in the menu under my header. I also bookmark lots of different blogs. There’s the blog update through Google Friend Connect (Blogs I’m Following) that can be accessed when I sign into Blogger. And then there are the blogs I discover through other bloggers’ blog rolls. Yikes. It works for me.

So, a couple of things: The blogs that you follow through Google Friend Connect are different from those you follow in Google Reader, though you can also opt to read them via Reader. I don’t know what plans Google has for GFC. As far as I know, they haven’t announced any plans to discontinue it. So don’t panic about that. If I find out differently, I’ll let you know.

I have never really liked Google Reader except as a way to see what blogs have recently posted – that’s why I hardly ever used it. For me, the blog reading experience is about seeing the whole blog. I’m a very visual person. I want to see the design, the header, the sidebar. Most bloggers work very hard to create the look of their blog and I want to honor that. Also, as I have said before, if a blogger depends on ad income, she will need me to click on her blog directly – not through a reader. And then there are stats – how many visitors, etc. Visiting a blog directly can matter a great deal to that blogger.

It’s the same reason I don’t subscribe to blogs via email subscriptions. To me, a post loses all its life when it’s transformed to an email. But, that’s just what works for me. I know that many of you subscribe to this blog via an email subscription or a reader and I’m grateful that you do! I know that lots of you prefer the convenience of those options. And it’s important to offer those options to our readers, as everyone has their own particular preference as to blog reading. We’re all busy and a reader can be a convenient way to get all the updates from your favorite blogs. The same for emails.

There are other RSS Readers out there that are ready and willing to help you transfer your Google Reader feed. I remembered this week that I had set up an account at Bloglovin several months ago and then promptly forgot about it. I decided to see if I could transfer my Google Reader feed easily to Bloglovin. Short answer: yes. It couldn’t be easier. Bloglovin does it for you. You get this message:

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 8.16.58 AM

Basically you click on import reader and it’s done. What I like about Bloglovin is that the interface is very user friendly and when you click on a particular post, you get the whole blog, design and all. Plus, if you are interested in discovering new blogs, you can search in a particular category.

I’ve added a Follow This Blog with Bloglovin widget to my sidebar, so if you are interested, click away!

Ah. More egg cups. More bunny rabbits.

Left: A cute little bunny peeking around the corner of an egg house.

Center: Another bunny hanging around outside of his little house.

Right: One of my favorite bunny rabbits – because she reminds me of Scout. Same huge pink ears, same facial expression. She’s my Scoutie Egg Cup.

More to come.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
