Sun, Cold & Screeners

January 3, 2018 at 9:28 am by Claudia

As I natter on about the cold, I’m aware that today is to be the warmest day of the week and it will still  be below freezing. I’m also aware that keeping the blinds drawn makes it a tad warmer inside, but we have so few hours of daylight and I need sun.

I’d give anything for a 32° day.

One positive in the midst of endless cold: I’ve been drawn to the winter sunshine and the way it changes the look of the cottage throughout the day. Don pointed out the way the light was illuminating the Vernors soda crate the other day.

The crate and the blue of the table, along with a bit of a spotlight on the jade plant – lovely.

Light and shadow.

Since Don is a member of SAG, the Screen Actors Guild, we get to screen the movies that are up for Best Picture at the SAG Awards. They’re called ‘screeners.’ They trickle in through the mail in early January. Last night, we watched Get Out, a brilliant piece of work by Jordan Peele, who wrote and directed it. You might be familiar with him through his series with Keegan Michael Key called Key and Peele. It’s one of our favorites.

The film is incredible and we can’t stop talking about it this morning. I don’t know how to describe it except to say it’s a combination of horror/dark comedy/social commentary about race in America. The direction is impeccable, the cast is top notch, and the actor playing the protagonist, Daniel Kaluuya, is brilliant. I want to watch it again. It’s that good. I recommend it highly. It makes you think. And think again.

I’m not sure what our pick for tonight will be, but I do know it’s the perfect way to spend a winter evening – watching a movie with my sweetie.

Christmas is still up. I’m thinking I’ll take it down at the end of the week. But then again…

Happy Wednesday.

The Day After The Day

December 26, 2017 at 8:54 am by Claudia

This is the scene we woke up to yesterday morning:

It’s a rare event when I pull on my boots and my coat and walk down the driveway to take a picture before I’ve even had one cup of coffee. But this wonderland was worth it! We couldn’t have ordered a more picture-perfect Christmas. And what a Hudson Valley welcome for Rick and Doug!

The view from the inside. Magical and wondrous.

We did the usual – had a first cup of coffee while the coffee cake was warming in the oven. Then we had piece of the cake while drinking our second cup of coffee. Then we opened presents.

Our first Stella-baked coffee cake.

Don went on and on about the coffee cake. We love it no matter what oven bakes it, but he swears – and I think he’s right – that this was the moistest and most evenly cooked coffee cake we’ve had in our over 20 years of indulging in this Christmas tradition.

Stella is a queen. We’re so glad she’s back in action and a part of our lives. (I wish I knew her story!)

We spoiled each other with presents. I especially wanted to spoil Don because somehow – due to schedules and time spent apart – I never got around to giving him a birthday present. So this was a combined celebration.

He got a  lot of stuff, but opening this one was definitely a thrill:

The ukulele he has is the smallest size and he mentioned that he wanted something bigger. Yippee, I thought! I went to our local guitar shop – these guys are the best – and picked out this version. It’s made by Kala. The wood grain is gorgeous. It also has a pick-up (which means it can be connected to an amp) which was one of Don’s wishes. I picked out the neatest retro-looking case – I’ll take a picture of it later.

He’s a happy camper. And that makes me happy. What is it now? Four guitars (one is mine) and two ukes? I’ll have to do a count.

Though two of my gifts haven’t arrived yet (Don has now learned the lesson of choosing faster shipping around the holidays) I was definitely blessed.

You might remember that I’ve started to collect Wallace Nutting hand-tinted prints. I had two of them. Now I have three, with the addition of this beauty:

A Corner of the Garden. Don chose it because it reminds him of my garden. I really love it.

He also bought a first edition of Wallace Nutting’s Biography (which is also the title), copyright 1936, signed by Wallace Nutting himself. Oh my heavens. What a treasure!

The day was completely packed. We had to shovel 4 or 5 inches of snow in order to get to Rick and Doug’s as well as cook the food that we were bringing to the dinner. Once we got there, we relaxed and basked in the glow of good friends and good conversation.

Exhausted at the end of the day but what a beautiful exhaustion!

I hope your day was lovely, filled with love and laughter and peace.

Happy Tuesday.

A Christmas Wish

December 24, 2017 at 9:34 am by Claudia

Though the snow hasn’t arrived yet, it will begin falling tonight. And the house will look much the same as it did when I took this picture last year.

It will be beautiful. It is  beautiful.

Today is a day for Christmas music and baking (the annual Christmas coffee cake), some cleaning, some laundry, definitely some wrapping, and we’ll top it all off by watching It’s a Wonderful Life  this evening. Last night we watched A Christmas Story.

Dear friends, I hope you have the most wonderful of Christmases. We’ve been through an extremely stressful year politically and it has taken its toll. And many of us have had personal stresses, challenges, and loss, as well. I hope that for this pocket of time – these two days – you can find some peace and joy and simplicity. Turn off the television news. Keep off Twitter (a message from me to me). Don’t let anyone steal your joy.

Concentrate on love – expressing it, revelling in it, sending it out to everyone, even those we have reason to dislike or despise – knowing that, in the end, there is only love. And if there is only love, then love indeed trumps hate.

Be a warrior for love.

May the coming year bring peace and resolution and healing.

And as we count our blessings today and tomorrow, I am well aware that one of my biggest blessings is you. Thank you for being here and for being a part of my life. My cup runneth over.

I’m taking the day off tomorrow, so I will close by wishing you a heartfelt Merry Christmas!

May blessings and good and love and joy surround you and envelop you.

Happy Christmas Eve.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
