The Den

October 9, 2013 at 10:07 am by Claudia

leaves

I spent much of yesterday raking up leaves. We had a big, scary storm come through on Monday and the high winds knocked ¾ of the leaves off the sugar maple. Then we grabbed the tarp, raked them onto the tarp and took them up to the woods to become mulch. Most of the leaves on the flower beds stay there, protecting the plants and doing their thing to help the soil. Of course, raking at this time of year is endless, but the front yard is definitely looking better than it did.

I’m late getting this post up because we stayed up until 1:00 am watching the Red Sox/Rays game. Oh lord. It was endless and frustrating as Boston couldn’t seem to get anything going for most of the game. I found myself yelling at the screen more than a few times. After the Rays scored a run and maintained that lead for much of the game, somehow the Sox managed to get three runs up on the scoreboard and they won. They will play either the Detroit Tigers or the Oakland A’s for the American League Pennant. If it’s the Tigers, it will be a bit tough for me as they are my hometown team and I grew up watching them.

One of you asked to see the newly acquired lamps in a larger photo of the den. Let me say right off that the den is notoriously hard to photograph; it has a lot of windows and it borders the porch with its deep overhang. So, light? A problem. But I grabbed my camera and came up with these.

den1

The den is a smallish room (every room in this house is small – the house is less than 1200 sq. ft and that includes the uninhabitable basement) and it’s sort of packed with furniture. But we hang out there a lot. I blog in that chair. Evenings find us sitting side by side on the sofa, more often than not with Scout taking up half of the sofa and Don and I crammed into the other half. What’s wrong with that picture?

The window blinds were here when we bought the cottage and, so far, I’ve been okay with them. Lately, I’ve been thinking about some sort of curtains. But curtains are my other source of frustration, right after lamps. We’ll see what I come up with.

den2

We’ve had the sofa for about 17 years. Would I like a new one? Yes. But it’s hanging in there with the help of a slipcover.

den3

The blogging chair is vintage – we got it in California. It needs to be reupholstered but somehow there is always something else that is more pressing on the budget front. So I use this IKEA slipcover which doesn’t quite fit but is cheap and easy to replace when I subject it to one too many coffee stains. To the right of that china cabinet is the television. You don’t need to see that, although sometime I’ll show you the cabinet, found at auction for $5 and repainted and ‘aged’ by me.

Like everything in our home, the furniture is used, recycled and reimagined. I bought that beautiful old china cabinet when I first moved to San Diego. It used to hold my collection of vintage Fiesta. The ottoman has a wicker base and we got that in San Diego, as well. I got the green table at an auction for $20. The coffee table was found in an antique store for $10. The vintage wire laundry basket was a Craig’s List find for $50. Well worth it. The white table was purchased at Heidi’s antique shop when we first moved to the cottage. The screen against the wall was a find in San Diego (it’s from our Craftsman days – I tied some strips of fabric to the rods) and the painting over the sofa with my favorite frame ever was an auction score for $15. We’ve had the rug (originally from Pottery Barn) since we first moved out east. That would be 12 years ago. The floor lamp on the left side of the sofa is vintage, we found it in San Diego. The glass shade was found separately. Everything, except for the initial investment in the sofa, was very inexpensive.

My little desk (found on the street and not pictured) is in the corner and there is a vintage sheet music cabinet (found at auction for $25) just inside the entrance to the den.

While the living room has lighter McCoy Pottery-like-sherbety-colors, the den is predominantly red, cream and tan, with a splash of green. It’s a very cozy room at any time of year, but it is especially so when the weather turns cold. Now you can see where I work each morning. With coffee in hand, I step down (it’s sunken) into the den, Scout following. We arrange ourselves, my girl and I, in our respective places; yours truly in the chair, Scoutie in the ‘tunnel.’

I’m there right now.

Happy Wednesday.

A Special Find for the Cottage

October 8, 2013 at 8:57 am by Claudia

Lamps. They are a continual source of frustration for me. Lamps in my home are divided into two categories: charming, personality-filled vintage lamps and blah, cheap, mass-produced lamps. I’ve had a couple of lamps bite the dust this year and every time I’ve shopped for a new lamp I’ve been disappointed. Either they are boring and not me or they are ridiculously expensive. Our cottage is decorated in an eclectic/country/cottage/funky style – a style I call “Christmas in Connecticut” after the overstuffed, comfy, cottagey style in that movie. If I could manage it, every lamp in this cottage would be vintage. But they are hard to find and, often, very expensive.

Cut to Sunday: I was feeling restless after having been housebound with Scout for a whole week – a week in which the only place I visited was the Vet’s office. I told Don I needed to get out and suggested we go across the Hudson River to an antique center that we like. It’s a really neat place in a very old building with lots of dealers. At one point I quickly went through a room filled with silver and ‘traditional’ things that I usually ignore. I was on my way upstairs. On the way back through that same room, I spied an interesting lamp base. I stopped. Part of it was done in jadeite green. I think it’s that color that caught my eye. But there was also some sort of metal in a lovely design. It was heavy. I walked away. Came back. Then I realized there were two of them – a pair. My eyes traveled up to the shade. Oh my. Vintage. Whipstitched. Gorgeous. I did a speed walk around the building and found Don. What did he think? He really liked them. We found the dealer and asked him to put in some light bulbs so we could see if they worked. They did.

Then we dithered about them. We are so, so careful with money that we more often than not say no to something like this. Then the dealer gave us a discount. Oh boy. We knew we would never see anything like them again.

We bought them.

This is the base:

Another view:

I’m in love.

And with the shade. The shades…the shades are making me crazy, I love them so much. I’m pretty sure the shades were replacements for something more ornate, but I can’t be sure. I don’t really care. The combination of the base and the shade is splendidly funky – just our style. Look at the whipstitching:

These vintage shades are in perfect condition. As are the lamp bases. (The dealer told me he bought them because of the shades and I totally get it.)

On the other table in the den. (This table is usually home to the phone and the remotes. I removed them for this picture.)

And on my little table.

The finials are lovely – one has a lovely glass marble insert, the other insert is missing. We will be keeping our eyes open for a pretty glass marble to replace the missing one.

When I look at the amber marble, which matches the shade, I begin to wonder if the lampshades were indeed original to the lamp. Hmmm.

Honestly, we are in love with these lamps. The golden glow they give to the den in the evening is simply wonderful. They make the den seem so intimate and cozy and warm and inviting. They’re the perfect size – about 21 inches tall. They’re heavy and solid and they make my heart sing.

The price for the pair was truly a steal – the shades alone are worth more than the final cost. But of course, we have to validate every purchase we make. So we went through the list. We needed lamps – check. They’re vintage and we won’t see them in anyone else’s home – check. They suit our style – check. We love them – check.

And our anniversary is this Saturday. They are the anniversary gift we are giving to each other.

Check.

Happy Tuesday.

The Lamb With The Party Hat Says Welcome

October 3, 2013 at 9:22 am by Claudia

My husband is a fun, slightly wacky guy. He has a wonderful sense of the absurd, as well as…get ready for my favorite word…a sense of ‘whimsy.’ Since I’m the same way, we get on beautifully. During one visit to Hartford, he saw my new Lamb with the Party Hat canvas and loved it. His immediate reaction? Hang it in the living room.

canvas2

Since I had been thinking he would most likely think it was cute but would go along with my idea to hang it in my studio or above my desk in the den, I was surprised. And pleased. So this is what greets you if you enter the cottage via the front door. Is she the official greeter? Ummm, no. Scout would have a problem with that. But she’s certainly second in command.

canvas1

Gosh, I love a splash of whimsy in a room.

During the course of our initial conversation, Don said we should hang it above the piano. Yes, I said, it would look nice there, but one of my favorite things is hanging above the piano and that bit of wall space is the perfect place for it. This is what I was referring to:

keyboard

(There’s a post on this blog that tells the story of this sign. You can read about it here.)

Turns out Don isn’t so crazy about this sign.

What???? I couldn’t believe my ears. If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know I am absolutely gaga, certifiably crazy, as well as nutty, about this sign. When pressed to give his reasons, he said it just didn’t do anything for him.

Well, I said, with hands on hips. It’s staying. I’m not moving it. It’s the perfect place for it. It’s staying.

Then I gave him a look of utter disbelief.

And besides, I said, there’s enough aqua in and around the piano. I don’t want things to be too matchy-matchy.

I put my proverbial foot down.

Actually, we’re pretty sympatico as to the decorating of our house. For the most part, we like the same things. This is the rare blip on the horizon. But I am the driving force behind most of the decorating. I usually get the final say, except for parts of the guest room/Don’s studio/office. I let him have (mostly) free rein there.

He’s a pretty easy-going guy about this sort of thing.

Nevertheless, I was sort of shocked. Just when you think you know someone….

In other news, the New Dawn Rose stopped blooming a long time ago. What did I see yesterday evening?

rose

A single blossom. A surprise early autumn gift. Lovely.

Scout turned a corner yesterday. She slept a lot the night before and when she woke up, she looked more like herself. She’s been eating white rice and cottage cheese, with the addition of few pieces of kibble. She was hungry all day long, not surprising considering she hadn’t had anything to eat since Friday. We’re taking it slow. She is getting around just fine and any pain she had seems to be gone. She’s still bleeding a bit, but the doctor said that would happen, as the blood has to drain.

We still have to keep a close eye on her, but the relief we both felt yesterday was enormous. I’m starting to see my girl again. What a trooper she is! What a feisty, strong, beautiful girl.

We’re all recovering here at the cottage.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
