Why I Love ‘Undecorate’

June 2, 2011 at 11:16 am by Claudia

Yesterday, I thumbed through this book in the bookstore. It speaks to me. It has moved to first place on my book wish list. I’ve never been a fan of rooms done by a professional decorator. I can spot them a mile away and they almost always bore me. As I look at them, all I can think is, ‘But what furniture did the homeowner choose? What shows the homeowner’s personality?” I could never have someone ‘do’ my home for me. Undecorate showcases the homes of wonderfully individual, quirky people who don’t decorate by the rules. A group of paintings might be hung crookedly. There are dogs. There are kids and kid messes. Loved finds are showcased in seemingly impromptu groupings.

I’d much rather see something real than too ‘staged.’ I like pretty photos as much as the next person, don’t get me wrong. I admire them. But I respond from the heart to real and honest. There’s nothing I like more than to walk into someone’s house for the first time and ooh and ah, not about a perfectly pretty space, but about the what that home tells me about the homeowner’s personality. I want to know the story behind the painting, the collection, the funky chair. How did all of these things come to be together in this space? That is what I find fascinating and compelling.

I get bored with an overabundance of one look, whether it be sleek and industrial or shabby and white. After a while, my eyes glaze over. My home has its imperfections, believe me, but if you walked in the door right now, you would sense immediately what Don and I love. You would ‘get’ us.

Here’s to quirky, electic and slightly off-beat.

That’s why this book by Christiane Lemieux is so wonderful. By the way, it is beautifully written. And no, this is not a book review. I simply wanted to share it with you.

On that note, let me close with the perfect quote from May Sarton (written in 1973):

“Standards of housekeeping and home decorating have become pretentious and competitive… I don’t blame people for fleeing those House Beautiful houses, nonshelters, dehumanized, ostentatious, rarely expressing an individual family’s way of life.

When I was writing a column for Family Circle, I had planned one in praise of shabbiness. A house that does nor have one worn, comfy chair is soulless. It all comes back to the fact that we are not asked to be perfect, just human. What a relief it is to walk into a human house!”

Ah, May. You said it all.

A Sad Lack of Decorating

April 21, 2011 at 6:41 pm by Claudia

May I be frank? I don’t usually do very much Easter decorating. We don’t have kids, the dogs don’t care and we certainly don’t need any candy around here. Today is, what, 3 days before Easter? Nothing. Feeling somewhat remiss, I decided to look for my fabric eggs. If you remember, I made many, many of them 2 years ago when I was in San Diego. Where are they?

In my catch-all drawer. In the same drawer?

My box of beautiful Quail eggs, which surely should be on display for Spring, right next to the lint brush. And on top of our wedding album.

My egg cup collection?

Tucked into their little home in the guest bedroom/studio/office. I didn’t even give them their usual Easter photo session.

This, my friends, is all you’re going to get this year:

Hey, at least it’s something!

This has been the coldest April I can remember. It it’s not raining, it’s windy. We’ve had only a few days of sun. Hello, Spring? Can you hear me? I’m COLD. I worked outside today in the garden with the wind howling and now my cheeks are red from wind burn. I have to leave for Wisconsin in 9 days. I think you’ve given me about 4 days that were decent enough to work outside. Enough, already!

Side note: I’ve been playing with the blog. (It’s been raining endlessly and I was bored.) I cleaned up the sidebar which was looking too cluttered. I dared to mess with the Html on my template and added some pages right under the header. They contain much of what was on the sidebar plus some extras. This is a work in progress – I’ll be tweaking it in the coming days.

Have a great weekend, if I don’t post before Sunday. If you celebrate Easter, have a happy one.

Some Wednesday Randomness

February 9, 2011 at 1:40 pm by Claudia

:: Thank you friends for all the wonderful comments about Studios magazine. I promise to share more when we get closer to February 22nd. Honestly, when I look at all the other studios in the magazine, my  hallway/landing space looks very teeny. Who am I kidding? It is! Even so, I spent a lot of time and love on it, so I am thrilled to see it in print.

:: What else is new at MHC? Not a whole lot. I’ve been away from rehearsals for a few days as the director and actors work through parts of the play. I’m returning to the city tomorrow – bright and early. I just may have to reward myself for rising at the crack of dawn with a little trip to Daytona Trimmings for some more Perle Cotton, don’t you think?

:: Remember my photo of the rainbow over MHC? Several of you suggested I enlarge it and get it framed. Well, I did and that led to enlarging another photo that I loved and suddenly we have an ‘arrangement’ above the piano.

The photo on the right is of my doggies. I was sitting in a chair in the living room and Miss Scoutie walked up to Riley and thank goodness I had my camera with me because such sweetness must be captured. The 3 photos below are of me on our wedding day. (Husband insisted I hang it there.) And the other photo is of me, sitting on this very same piano bench when I was 8 years old. I think I had just started taking piano lessons. I’m holding my little sister – the one who hasn’t visited my parents in 9 years and no longer speaks to me or my sister Meredith. That’s a whole other story and one that makes me angry and sad, so I’ll move on.

:: As in a game of musical chairs, the living room chairs have all moved one position clockwise.

You can’t see it because, of course, I never photograph it, but there is a boot tray just to the left and behind the red chair. Since we don’t have a separate entryway or mud room, we have to shed our shoes and boots just inside the side door. Not very attractive. Since this weather is so messy, we are often flinging bits of salt and ice off our boots and jackets. The yellow chair is the only chair that we bought new and I became nervous about it getting dirty – maybe because it was getting dirty. A little change is good, right?

:: The view through our windshield as we drove northward on Sunday. We had a little pre-Valentine’s Day brunch while listening to the beautiful songs of some friends of ours. Do you see the darker clouds low on the horizon? Right below them you can just make out the Catskill Mountains.

:: Today is very cold, but Don was talking to a local guy who said it is supposed to get milder next week and that we might have a milder than normal February and March.

I’m crossing my fingers.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
