Early Morning Thoughts

January 16, 2009 at 11:02 am by Claudia

Sometimes I wake up very early, like I did today. At 5:30 am, I decided to get up and watch the sun rise from the window of my apartment while I drank coffee and caught up with some blogs. There is something about the quiet morning hours that is so peaceful. I am not one of those lucky people who wake up raring to go, bright-eyed and talking a blue streak. Anyone who knows me knows that I need my coffee and some quiet time before I become something close to human. Since I am staying in an apartment building on a rather busy street, and not in my little cottage, I am always aware of my effect on others in the building. I walk quietly, keep the television volume down, wait to exercise until a decent hour, and try to close doors quietly. My downstairs neighbors are married – 2 actors who are in the same play. I tend to hear their footsteps, but generally, they are very quiet.

It has been two weeks since I came to San Diego. I start teaching next Tuesday and my schedule will get busier. That’s a good thing. My husband is dealing with the frigid temperatures that are enveloping so much of the country. Out here it has been much warmer than usual. Such a contrast!

I am settling in. The apartment is much more ‘me’ than it was when I first arrived. I can take pleasure in my surroundings and that is so important to me. It always has been, since I was a young girl. I feel that if I create an environment that is warm and enveloping, I can function more efficiently. I can relax and let go. I know all my blogging friends feel the same way.

This sweet coffee mug helps me wake up. I got it at Target – so much better than a plain cup, isn’t it? Flowers on anything – I love them!

Have a great Friday!

McCoy is found in San Diego!

January 11, 2009 at 3:46 pm by Claudia

Now how can I have a cozy, decorated apartment in San Diego without McCoy pottery? I found this lovely bulb dish on one of my visits to my favorite antique shop. It was, needless to say, a bargain. I have one like it at home in aqua, but I love how striking it is in ivory. I filled it with these:

These are some bakelite Mahjongg tiles I found in a store back home. I love bakelite and I love Mahjongg, so how could I resist? I also found this lovely vase for a song and it is one I have always wanted.

I always feel better with some of my favorite pottery around me. I thought I would have to go to rehearsal today, but turns out I don’t. I will be watching the Chargers play and crossing my fingers for them. And “24” starts tonight! I am a huge fan. Due to the writers’ strike last year it wasn’t aired. It has been almost 2 years – can’t wait!

Thanks for all your supportive comments on my decorating here in San Diego. They help so much in this transition.

Are you sick of hearing about IKEA?

January 8, 2009 at 6:43 pm by Claudia

Yes, I know, I seem to be living at IKEA. I’m not, of course, but it is close-by and has been a godsend! Today I ran in for a couple more $8.00 throw rugs (which are really bathroom rugs, but who cares?) and I saw this set of cards. Each card has a reproduction of a Carl Larsson print. They are part of his “A Home” series. I have always loved his work and his depiction of home life in Sweden. These prints were $2.00. $2.00 for 5 prints. Then I bought 2 frames (2 for $2.99) and framed two of the prints. They are so charming I am going to have to go back and get 3 more so that I can frame all 5. I told you I was going to do this on a budget.

I had to frame these prints first since they involve a dog and knitting. Aren’t they lovely?
I’m not sure where I’m going to hang them here in the apartment but they will certainly add a great deal of charm when they are in place. (You can click on the photos to see more detail.)

More later.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
