Good morning and happy Easter. So far, there’s not any sun in evidence, but I’m hoping that will change. Yesterday was sunny and a bit warmer and boy, did that feel good. Is it possible, just possible, that spring might be coming?

No Easter candy to be found here. When Don and I first met, I did attempt to put some baskets together, but he didn’t really care and we don’t have kids and the last thing I need are more sweets for my already over-active sweet tooth, so we didn’t do that again. And, despite my egg cup collection, no eggs have been dyed or colored or even hard boiled.

We never do a big dinner either. Just as well, as this is the day that Don leaves for Prague. A car is coming to take him to the airport in Newark, NJ around 4:30 pm. One of the perks of being part of a film: a car comes for you and your wife doesn’t have to drive you all the way to Newark. I’ve done that before and it’s a long haul. He’ll fly all night, connecting in Zurich. I’m so excited for him. He’s a bit nervous right now with all the traveling ahead, the overnight flight, will he have a seat that will accomodate his over 6 foot 4 inch frame, all the waiting and the jet lag. Things will be better once he gets there, I imagine. Both of us have been to Europe, but it has been many years since either of us has been there. Traveling overseas is not an everyday thing for us.

Speaking of Don, I added a widget to the sidebar that will lead you to some of his music on the ReverbNation site. I know I mentioned that he recorded about 14 of his favorite songs while he was in San Diego. His friend is working on them in his recording studio, mixing and mastering them. When Don receives an edited version, he adds it to his site. So far, I think there are about 6 songs available for your listening pleasure. Interestingly, he recorded all of them right after he had the flu and he’s never sounded better!

We watched a great screwball comedy last night, The Lady Eve with Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. Have I mentioned before what a huge Barbara Stanwyck fan I am? And how much I love those period movies with all the great character actors? Heaven. Today another of my favorites, Easter Parade, is on TCM. If I am a huge Barbara Stanwyck fan, I am a mega fan of Fred Astaire. I have just about every book written about him. Of course I already own a copy of Easter Parade, but somehow it’s more exciting when it happens to be on television. I don’t know why.

Opening day, Red Sox/Yankees tomorrow! Baseball is back and I’m a happy girl.

Have a wonderful day, eat lots of candy, celebrate.

Deer, Wi-Fi, Shakespeare & Egg Cups

March 27, 2013 at 8:37 am by Claudia

babydeer

A young one. Look at that sweet face, staring right back at me as I took a photo through the kitchen window. This morning I arose rather early and it was still a bit darkish outside. I went to let Scout out, realizing too late that there was yet another deer in the corral. Fortunately, Scout was a big groggy and it took her a second or so to realize just what was going on and the deer turned and jumped gracefully over the fence, flying across the back forty.

When I saw these guys feeding yesterday afternoon, I called to my husband as I grabbed my camera: Look! Don! Some deer!

Don: I’ve pretty much seen all there is to see about the deer.

Me: What? You don’t want to leap up, as I do, every time there is a photo op???

Don is over it. And he doesn’t have a camera obsession like I do. I just hope I can get him to take some photos of Prague with his iPhone.

I’m happy to say that the Wi-Fi problem here is resolved, thanks to a cable employee who immediately got the situation and quite readily said that my router would be better than anything the cable company had. I love it when an employee is upfront and honest with me. Ten minutes later, my router was back in business, I had a strong, consistent signal and we were good to go.

I’m anxiously awaiting the hard copy of Twelfth Night. The director has made some cuts and, now that they are finalized, I should shortly be receiving it in the mail. I have to start work on it. I’ve coached Twelfth Night at least 4 or 5 times in the past, but have I saved any of the scripts with all my notes in them?

No.

There’s only so much space around here and I usually end up tossing them. And then I have to start all over again. Oh, for a big office/studio space of my own, in its very own room, with four walls and lots of storage space. And a door.

Note coffee stained reference book. A year ago, I had an unfortunate incident with a bag of books and a coffee cup, while trying to juggle too many things as I made my way to the car. Bad Claudia.

Just had to stick this in the post. She’s awfully pretty, isn’t she?

More egg cups:

On the left: To be honest, this might be a toothpick holder, but I choose to call it an egg cup. Love, love that sweet face.

Center: This one was found in California. Those are my colors, how could I resist?

Right: A goose egg cup, made in France.

Some of you have remarked about how hard these figural egg cups are to find nowadays. And you’re right. Back when I started collecting, about 10 years ago, I would haunt eBay, often sneaking out of our bedroom in the wee hours of the morning to put a last minute bid on one I particularly wanted. There was much more variety in those days. I spent some time on eBay the other day and was disappointed in the lack of interesting egg cups, which, unfortunately, has been the case for the past couple of years. For that reason, I haven’t added to the collection lately, the goose egg cup being an exception. I found that a year or two ago in a local shop and I pounced on it! I’ve never seen another one like it.

I apologize for not responding to comments yesterday. The day got away from me. That will happen occasionally. But I read them all and I’m so grateful for them. Thanks, friends.

Oh, please visit my sister’s blog for two posts about a surprise that Mer found wrapped inside a quilt my grandmother had made for her. It’s the best story! Visit here and here.

Happy Wednesday.

A Splash of Red

March 26, 2013 at 9:32 am by Claudia

cardinal2

A quick glance out the kitchen window revealed a splash of red. My friend, Mr. Cardinal, actually stayed in the same place long enough for me to snap this picture. Such a gray day needs a bit of color, don’t you think?

He’s gorgeous.

Sleepless night last night. Well, not entirely sleepless, but frustrating nonetheless. And today I have to deal with my cable company. Again. I have a wireless router here that we use for our WI FI connection. After talking to the cable company one day, I decided it might be better to rent a router from them, so they could have access to both our modem and the router on their end should any trouble arise. I’ve had it around here for a month but decided I didn’t want to try installing it by myself. So they came out on Saturday. For some reason, their router didn’t work as well upstairs as mine had, so they connected it downstairs. A few hours after the installer left, it became very clear that our internet connection was about 10 times worse than it had been. I could barely get a signal when I was sitting 15 feet away from the router.

So they’re coming back out today to either solve the problem or reconnect my router. I think I prefer the latter solution. Boy, this has been a frustrating 3 days! It feels like being on dial-up again.

Don got his script yesterday and is memorizing his lines. This will be the kind of thing that American Experience does so well: lots of narration, interviews with the author of the book on which the program is based, interviews with other experts and several scenes with the actors. Don really looks like the man he is playing. Tall, imposing, same facial characteristics – and that is important when the production has a documentary feel to it. He leaves on Sunday!

Today’s egg cups:

In the rear, on left: an egg cup with a rooster by Holt Howard, one of the first that I purchased. Unfortunately, I knocked it off the shelf last year and had to glue it back together. I was not happy with myself.

In the rear, on right: a brown transferware egg cup by Mason, part of the Mason’s Vista line of china.

In the front: a pink and cream chicken pulling a cart. It still has the Made in California sticker. There is a real California pottery feel to it.

More tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
