A Splash of Red

March 26, 2013 at 9:32 am by Claudia

cardinal2

A quick glance out the kitchen window revealed a splash of red. My friend, Mr. Cardinal, actually stayed in the same place long enough for me to snap this picture. Such a gray day needs a bit of color, don’t you think?

He’s gorgeous.

Sleepless night last night. Well, not entirely sleepless, but frustrating nonetheless. And today I have to deal with my cable company. Again. I have a wireless router here that we use for our WI FI connection. After talking to the cable company one day, I decided it might be better to rent a router from them, so they could have access to both our modem and the router on their end should any trouble arise. I’ve had it around here for a month but decided I didn’t want to try installing it by myself. So they came out on Saturday. For some reason, their router didn’t work as well upstairs as mine had, so they connected it downstairs. A few hours after the installer left, it became very clear that our internet connection was about 10 times worse than it had been. I could barely get a signal when I was sitting 15 feet away from the router.

So they’re coming back out today to either solve the problem or reconnect my router. I think I prefer the latter solution. Boy, this has been a frustrating 3 days! It feels like being on dial-up again.

Don got his script yesterday and is memorizing his lines. This will be the kind of thing that American Experience does so well: lots of narration, interviews with the author of the book on which the program is based, interviews with other experts and several scenes with the actors. Don really looks like the man he is playing. Tall, imposing, same facial characteristics – and that is important when the production has a documentary feel to it. He leaves on Sunday!

Today’s egg cups:

In the rear, on left: an egg cup with a rooster by Holt Howard, one of the first that I purchased. Unfortunately, I knocked it off the shelf last year and had to glue it back together. I was not happy with myself.

In the rear, on right: a brown transferware egg cup by Mason, part of the Mason’s Vista line of china.

In the front: a pink and cream chicken pulling a cart. It still has the Made in California sticker. There is a real California pottery feel to it.

More tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday.

Scout: Who The Heck Is In My Corral? (And Other Things)

March 25, 2013 at 8:08 am by Claudia

The other evening, around dusk, Scout started barking while looking out the window. There was, shall we say, an extra urgency to her barks which brought me to the window to see just what the heck was going on.

An intruder was in her dog corral:

deer

The nerve! At the end of a tough winter, that grass must have been enticing. Scout, of course, kept up her outraged barking. When I knocked on the window (these photos were all taken through the kitchen windows) the deer calmly looked at me and then resumed eating.

My initial response was that I’d never seen a deer inside of the corral before. And Don remarked dryly that he would bet they were in there more than we knew. He’s probably right. Eventually, Don gently opened the door and the deer took off over the fence.

One early morning when Don was away in California – it must have been around 4 am or so – I got up to go to the bathroom and I could see the silhouettes of deer moving quietly through the back yard. I remember it distinctly because I was half asleep and the movements of the deer seemed other-worldly and almost magical – where you’re left wondering if you dreamed the whole thing. It was real and it was indeed magical. A vivid, wonderful memory.

I love deer. They are beautiful, gentle creatures. They share this land with us.

On this Monday? Snow showers. Oh Spring, where the heck are you? I’ve been feeling the blues lately and I know it’s because I need to get outside, feel the sun and start working in the garden. This winter has seemingly gone on forever. There is much I have to do before I leave for Hartford and the lingering winter is not helping things.

Ah, well.

I won this book in a giveaway from Mary at Ms. Redo. I’ve seen it mentioned on many blogs and I must admit I’m intrigued. I look forward to exploring it. Thank you, Mary!

The crochet you see in this photo? It’s my experiment in crocheting with thread, like my grandmother used to. The problem is that the hook I am using is too big. I’ll have to buy a smaller one. Nevertheless, it’s awfully delicate and pretty.

Today’s egg cups:

Egg cups with feet. The one on the left is the real deal – made by Carlton Ware of England and called Walking Ware. Such silliness!

The one on the right is not marked as Carlton Ware, but it’s pretty cute, nonetheless.

And for those of you who read my guidelines for posting on A Favorite Thing, the part about leaving a comment was only about that particular meme. Not about my other posts! I love your comments and they make me happy, but this is pressure-free commenting zone, my friends.

Happy Monday.

Mabel Gets Dressed

March 24, 2013 at 8:30 am by Claudia

Mabel was looking dusty. Her glossy black finish seemed a little less than spiffy.

She wasn’t happy. She complained. Rightfully so.

So I, not a seamstress by any means, grabbed some fabric. I encouraged Mabel to help, too. I measured and cut and then Mabel took over with her nifty straight stitch.

I found some vintage suede ribbon in a pretty shade of blue and made ties for each end.

I like it. Mabel likes it. But something needed tweaking and I let that idea simmer overnight.

There! Mabel’s initial in more of the suede ribbon.

eggcups9

Today’s egg cups:

On the right is the very first egg cup I ever received. It was given to me by my godparents when I was a little girl. It was made for Fanny Farmer candies – part of an Easter series. I held onto that egg cup for years and years. It wasn’t until we moved out east that I found out there was a whole world of egg cups out there.

One of the first egg cups in my newly begun collection was the one on the left – also made for Fanny Farmer. And readers, here’s the best part: It was made by McCoy! McCoy and an egg cup – what a great combination!

And no, I don’t like soft boiled eggs, though my mother surely served them to me in my first egg cup. I remember that distinctly. Especially when I was sick.

More tomorrow.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
