Much Mulching & Pretty Pottery

April 27, 2011 at 8:59 am by Claudia

Alliteration makes me smile, hence today’s blog post title. Greetings from the land of mulch! And I mean lots of mulch. Yesterday, this crazy, extreme spring gave us a sunny day in the 80’s. I knew what I had to do. It was mulch time.

Don usually helps me with mulching but he had to go into Manhattan at the last minute. So it was just me and 8 bags of mulch. Since I’m leaving Sunday and big thunderstorms are forecast today and tomorrow, I had to grab my chance. I mulched. I planted. I mowed the dogs’ corral.

And I can barely move today. My arms are sore from carting bags of mulch around. My back is sore from bending over. I got a little sunburn. But, gosh darn it, except for a little bed on the side of the house and the beds in front of the shed, all is mulched. I’m trying to keep potential weeds at bay but I’m sure that upon my return in June this will all be overgrown. Don is afraid to pull anything that might be a real plant and not a weed. I’ve given him permission to yank the Jacob’s Ladder when it gets too pushy, otherwise it will take over the garden bed.

I took a walk around the property – everything is just starting to bud.

The big sugar maple will probably leaf out right after I leave. I’m crossing my fingers…maybe it will happen sooner.

My little lilac – will it open before Sunday?

Tiny, perfect buds on the Wiegela bush. Please open before Sunday…

By the way, I have to get up at 4 am on Sunday to catch a 6 am flight. I had two choices: arrive in the morning or late at night. Since I will be using a rental car and I have no idea how to get around in Wisconsin, I thought the wise choice would be driving in daylight. So I can see where I’m going. And find the condo where I will be staying.

And, unbelievably, Sonja (who sent me some Roseville pottery a while back) sent me another piece! I am amazed at her generosity. How did I get so lucky?

This is the Zephyr Lily pattern. I have a shallow dish in the same pattern – it might have been the first piece that I acquired. Isn’t it lovely? And those little rosettes? The vase was full of them.

Right now they are in this unattractive zip-lock bag but they will soon be headed up to my studio. Thank you, Sonja. You are a truly generous person and I am deeply grateful for these gifts.

I’m going to do a bit more work around here today, if the rain holds off. Carefully. Gingerly. Don’t want to be hobbled by a bad back when I get to Wisconsin.

A Little Bird & Some Roseville Pottery

April 6, 2011 at 9:57 am by Claudia

This little guy was surveying the Beacon Hill scene from his perch on this hedge. Thankfully, he stayed still long enough for me to snap this photo.

It has finally stopped raining here at MHC. Maybe I’ll get some much-needed yard work done today. The sun is out…dare I hope that Spring may finally be here? Crossing fingers. Let’s just say that I learned my lesson a week or so ago. The snow shovels are still out.

I promised to show you the contents of the other package that was waiting for me when I got home from Boston. A while back, a reader of this blog named Sonja wrote me. She noticed that I had some Roseville pottery. She was getting rid of a piece or two…would I like them? Uh…yes!

Hello, beautiful Magnolia Cornucopia! This is made doubly precious because it was passed down from Sonja’s mother. It now has a place of honor alongside some of my other pieces.

There is a lush quality to the Roseville flower designs that I love. It’s the best word I can think of to describe their look. Years ago, I remember reading an article about the actress Teri Garr’s home. She has a great decorating style. Originally from Ohio where Roseville was manufactured, she had amassed a wonderful collection. I think that was when I fell for Roseville. I kept that article for years – wish I still had it.

Sonja sent me a second piece that she suspected was a knock-off. She said something just didn’t feel right about it. I did some research yesterday and I’ve come to the conclusion it is definitely a fake. The markings are wrong, the glaze is off and one of the numbers on the bottom is reversed. Nevertheless, I really love it – I am treating it like the real thing. It’s Don’s favorite. He has a good eye and suggested I place it here on the piano:

The pattern is Fuchsia. I like the way the wood tones of the Keyboard sign are picked up by the brown color of the vase. Good call, Don.

Once again, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of one of the readers of Mockingbird Hill Cottage. Thank you, Sonja, for these wonderful additions to my little collection. Sonja doesn’t have a blog yet, but she’s thinking of starting one. Let’s encourage her!

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Gifts and Snow

January 28, 2011 at 11:14 am by Claudia

A package arrived in my mailbox the other day – from Italy! Dear Monica, of The White Bench, had a giveaway and I was one of the lucky winners.

It was wrapped in this lovely handmade bag. The image is so beautiful it breaks my heart. The words “Tendre Souvenir” are stamped on a piece of fabric attached with two buttons. Utterly charming.

Inside were 3 beautiful examples of Monica’s photography and a lovely handwritten note. The present was wrapped in tulle with a little bundle of dried lavender. And here is the treat that was inside:

One of Monica’s beautiful hearts. Oh, that girl is talented!

I’ve hung it on the hutch in the kitchen. I think we need a little pink in that corner. Thank you, Monica. I treasure it.

My pal, Rizzi, sent me an email recently. In it she asked if I wanted some dollhouse hutches that she’d had around the house for a while. Of course! Yesterday, a package arrived in my mailbox.

That cutie wrapped everything in Valentine’s Day paper, along with a sweet card and some candy hearts. Here’s what was inside:

Wow! I’m going to have some fun with these. Thank you, Rizzi! By the way, Rizzi is Frog Hollow Farm Girl’s aunt. If you remember, FHFG sent me some of her late mother’s embroidery supplies a while back. Generosity clearly runs in that wonderful family.

Speaking of the dollhouse, I put the first coat of white paint on it the other day. Today I’ll do the second coat. I was hoping some of the supplies I ordered would arrive in time for me to do some more work this weekend – but alas, they aren’t going to arrive until Monday. Monday is the first day of rehearsal. Darn it!

Snow. It has taken over our lives and the lives of many, many others in the Northeast. I’ve spent most of my life in the upper Midwest and in the Northeast and I’ve never seen a stretch like this one. Seven major snowstorms in a month’s time and snow as far as the eye can see.  Please cross your fingers for me. As I have to start traveling back and forth to the city next week, let’s hope the snow only falls on those days I don’t have to be there. Or better yet, how about no more snow???? I think we’ve had enough.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
