A Wondrous Surprise in the Mail

September 2, 2010 at 8:07 am by Claudia

I am blessed. Yes, I am. I have wonderful friends that I’ve known from the age of 4 and friends I have been lucky enough to meet in recent years. One very special friend is Lori, the owner of Vignettes. Lori is kind, generous, funny, beautiful inside and out, and incredibly talented. I have rhapsodized about Vignettes in many posts over the past 2 years and if I could beam myself up I would be there today. Nothing, I mean nothing, I have seen anywhere else comes close to the wondrous enchantment of that shop.

Lori sent me a message last week saying she had put something in the mail for me – a little care package from Vignettes and her that she thought would make me smile. Yesterday, it arrived in my mailbox. (Our rural mail carrier, also named Lori, always gives a toot on her horn when she leaves a package down by our mailbox – isn’t that sweet? As soon as I heard it, I was hightailing it on down there.)

The wreath adorned the package, which I forgot to take a picture of in my excitement. Lori sent this wonderful handmade card in which she wrote some lovely words to me and mentioned that she couldn’t bear to think of my sheep all alone without a pal (I’d seen some vintage putz sheep in the shop) and here was a “friend all dressed up in Vignettes’ finery.”

Just wait. This was also in the package:

Isn’t this beautiful? The lovely sentiment, the sweet cottage, the beautiful trim around the frame? I am already searching for the perfect place for it in our cottage. Are you ready for a sheep arrayed in the best Vignettes’ finery?

Take a minute to collect yourself.

Gasp… Swoon…no words are adequate to describe what Lori had Karen Lampard of Cafe Paperie create for me. In fact, my gasp as I unwrapped this could be heard throughout the cottage. Look at the detail: the hat and the rose, the saddlebags trimmed with a button and the sign ‘Vignettes or Bust’, the flowers, the bell, the decorations around each hoof. Oh. my. goodness.

Double swoon! An Eiffel Tower pendant.

Could there be a cuter rear view? Every little detail is perfection.

I am humbled by this. This isn’t a swap or my birthday. This is just because. I told my husband that I couldn’t believe anyone would take the time to make something like this for me. That lovely Lori remembered the sheep and then went the extra mile to envision all this fabulous finery is truly incredible. I still can’t take it all in. As you well know, it is rare when I am speechless. But I was. I’m still having trouble finding the right words to express my gratitude and awe. Thank you, Karen. Thank you, dearest Lori. I am so grateful for the gift of your friendship. I miss you terribly.******************************************************************

From my Mind on a Wednesday Morning

September 1, 2010 at 8:57 am by Claudia

:: A thought: As I was looking out our front door, I saw this large spiderweb stretching from a porch post to the underside of the gutter. I moved at hyper-speed to grab the camera because I know from past experience these moments are fleeting. The spiderweb had been there all along but until the sunlight was shining through it in just the right way, it remained hidden.

It struck me that so much in life is just like that. Happiness, abundance, love, blessings, guidance, peace – are always there but often remain hidden because we can’t see them. We let darkness in and it obscures the truth. And we assume that what we see in that darkness is the truth. But it isn’t. I hope I can remind myself of that on a daily basis.

:: I’ve just started working on this. Designed by Rebecca Ringquist, it is a summer stitch sampler. I discovered Rebecca while blog hopping. A few bloggers were working on this sampler and I was immediately obsessed with obtaining one. Her design is hand drawn and screen printed on cotton. She just designed a new sampler – the Cake Sampler – which I’ve also ordered. Rebecca sells on Etsy and she also has a blog, Drop Cloth. You can link to her Etsy shop via her blog.

:: Last night, Don was featured on a radio show that originates out of Vassar College. The host was fabulous and he interviewed Don for about 90 minutes. Don played some of his music live and also shared some pieces by other musicians that have influenced him. I listened to him on my computer and had the best time! Don is really good in that kind of setting – he’s funny and articulate. He was so good that they want him to come back.

:: Mom is in a rehab facility. She is not doing well, however. I’m not sure where we are in the healing of her UTI, but she has been very confused and a bit delusional and I know those can be side effects of the infection. She’s getting physical therapy twice a day. She is making no effort to talk to other patients or take part in any activities. She just wants to go home. However, she’s not strong enough yet and there is no way my almost 87 year old father can take care of her until she is stronger. She needs to fight, but she doesn’t seem to want to. And there lies the problem and our biggest worry. My Dad has called me in tears because he’s scared. My sister is trying to juggle their needs with the needs of her family, all the while battling a cold.

We think I should wait to go back down there until we see what transpires in the next week or two. Meanwhile, we hope for the best, for a turnaround, for a little miracle.

:: Today is the last day to be considered for either of my giveaways. The CSN Giveaway ends tonight as well as the book giveaway from yesterday’s book review. Frankly, I’m surprised there are not more comments on the Book Review – gosh, you could win a free copy of the book and it is a wonderful novel! Come on, just do it!

CSN Giveaway

August 25, 2010 at 12:00 am by Claudia

By now, I’m sure you’ve seen or read about CSN stores. But if you haven’t, CSN has over 200 online stores where you can find everything from dinnerware to lighting to furniture to dog beds.

Wedgewood Sweet Plum Dinnerware Collection….want.

When I visit this site, I see many things I would like, no love, to have. Like these Laura Ashley Sheets:

Or this wall sconce (swoon):

Or this slip cover that would look awfully nice on my worse-for-the-wear ottoman:

CSN has generously offered a $60 gift certificate to be used at any of their stores for one lucky reader of this post. CSN only ships to the United States and Canada so entries will be limited to residents of those countries.

I won’t make you jump through hoops. Just leave one comment on this post and I will pick a winner. The deadline is September 1, 2010.

Thanks for entering and good luck!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
