Friday Thoughts

May 10, 2024 at 8:09 am by Claudia

Color-coordinated.

This might be one of my favorite photos. I took it a week or so ago and forgot to post it here.

It’s a rainy day today. We’re both tired as we did a lot of chores outside yesterday. And Don took care of some things I couldn’t handle because of my sprained hand. Very satisfying! But allergies are sure to follow at this time of year, so today I’m feeling stuffed up and my eyes are irritated.

I managed to wash the bedding and then make up the bed with one hand. Don had offered to help but I wanted to see if I could do it. I did! It’s the little things.

We have only a few things left to do outside, besides ongoing maintenance. We have to clear a couple of beds so we can sow some zinnia seeds. I’m going to try some morning glories again, but they haven’t done too well the last couple of years. And we have to grab the porch cushions from under the stairs, which involves moving the egg cup cubby.

I’m looking out the window towards the shed and, suddenly, there’s a dense and green forest out there! It’s amazing how quickly all the trees are filling out. What we long for over the long winter months is finally here.

So, because I’m feeling slightly irritable – a small gratitude list:

Green leaves, green grass, daffodils, wild mustard, newly planted pots in the secret garden, a gentle rain, a husband who has been a gem during this hand adventure, old movies to watch in the evenings, great spy thrillers to read, bunnies hopping around the property, birds singing every morning when I wake up, eagles, gardens, spring, and the apple pie Don is going to make this afternoon.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

The Finished Puzzle & Gratitude

December 30, 2021 at 9:35 am by Claudia

C’est fini.

I finished around 4 pm yesterday. This is one of the most detailed and complicated puzzles that I’ve had the pleasure of working on. I loved every minute of it. I think it took me 5 days to complete and on at least one of those days (Christmas) I did very little work. I’ve had fun identifying certain characters. There’s a big sheet of paper with a large picture of the finished puzzle and on the back, there’s a key to the characters, though I didn’t look at the key at all until this morning. My one complaint is that the sheet with the picture is so big and, therefore, very awkward to refer to when assembling the puzzle. Mine is now torn on several seams simply because I used it so much. It would be nice to also have a smaller version of the picture.

But then again, maybe that’s impossible, as there is so much tiny detail that would be almost impossible to make out on a smaller sheet of paper.

There’s a Jane Austen version that is on its way to my front porch later today. And I also have a New Yorker puzzled on tap that Don gave me for Christmas.

We’re thinking about ordering Thai food for New Year’s Eve. We have a bottle of sparkling cider on hand and we’ll toast 2021 and 2022. We’ll be in bed by 11:00, of course.

Woke up feeling rested and grateful. Grateful for quiet mornings, for incredible conversations that I have with Don (like the one we had earlier this morning), for this tiny cottage that sometimes drives me crazy but mostly fills me with profound gratitude, for opportunities that come out of nowhere, for dolls that bring out my inner child (so glad to see her again!) for twinkly lights (yes, the tree is still up and will remain so into the new year), for books stacked up and waiting for me to crack them open, for dollhouses, for good people (and there are so, so many of them), for animals and sunsets and butterflies and murmurations of starlings and food and heat and music and theater and film and adventures and love, for family and friends, for my sister whom I love so, so much, for my estranged sister whom I will alway love, for my brother and father and mother – no longer with me in bodily form but with me always, for our dogs (I miss them every day), for neighbors who bring us baklava (I snuck a bite), for coffee, for pie, for foggy mornings, for poetry, for a Higher Power/God/Universe/Great Spirit, for kindness, for humility, for big belly laughs, for solitude, for flowers and gardens and birds, for people who appreciate irony and the absurd, for old movies, for satire, for joy (and sadness, which is a part of life and the reason I appreciate joy when it appears.)

I could go on and on.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Day Seventy-Nine

May 31, 2020 at 9:38 am by Claudia

Heavens, it’s so beautiful out there today that I threw a jacket on and started taking pictures at about 7:15. The play of light and shadow was simply gorgeous.

It’s much cooler today. The birds are singing, it’s relatively quiet (we live on a busy road) and Don has already taken his morning walk. We’re now on our second cup of coffee.

We mowed yesterday – it was especially tiring as the grass was very long due to the rain we’ve had. But it sure looks pretty now! Next up (probably tomorrow) the corral and the back forty. I think we’ll take a break today.

We have declared today to be a break from all news. We will relax, do whatever brings us joy, and that’s it. That’s more than enough.

I am always grateful for my home, though we pay a hefty mortgage. To us, it’s worth it. I am blessed with a shelter that I love, with gardens and paths through our woods (all of which we have created) and all sorts of wildlife. It’s never more beautiful here than it is in May and June. One of the gifts of the lockdown is a renewed appreciation for simple things. For this fleabane that is blossoming all over the property. For the play of light and shadow in the living room and kitchen. For the yarrow that has self seeded up in the corral. For the view of the mountains. For quiet time together sitting on the glider. For books to read. For Peet’s Coffee. For the wee little buds on the hydrangea, just beginning to emerge. For the chance to rescue a wasp that had flown inside the house this morning. For flowers and trees and wildflowers. For bird song. For the things we love and collect which surround us every day. For my husband, the greatest gift I have ever received. For my family. For my sister and nieces and nephews. For the lovely conversation that I had with my brother’s eldest child the other day. (Her daughter is graduating from Boston University – a place I know and love.) For the play of light on the antique dollhouse which I can see from my chair in the den.

For all of you.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
