Comforting

April 30, 2018 at 9:29 am by Claudia

A gray and unseasonably cold morning with rain on the way. I slept very little last night because I had some nightmares when I first fell asleep that left me very unsettled.  So, I’m exhausted.

But this guy being here makes all the difference in the world. It may be gray and rainy but he’s here. I may be exhausted but he was here to comfort me this morning. It makes such a difference.

Even Monty thinks so.

I don’t know what we’ll do today, most likely it will be very low key. He’s tired, too.

This morning the groundhog (is it Henry, or are there two of them?) was walking by the kitchen door. Awfully close to the house for a shy little creature! And the neighbor’s cat was roaming our property which I don’t like because I don’t want him killing birds. At that point, the groundhog was hiding under my car and when I opened the door and gave a sharp clap to shoo off the cat, the groundhog took off, too. As did a robin. The groundhog is welcome. The cat is not.

This is what I saw when I was waiting in the car at the bus station. And believe me, it got even more spectacular. Don and I were gasping as we drove home.

Happy Monday.

Porching and Henry

April 22, 2018 at 9:46 am by Claudia

After a long winter, the last two sunny and warmish days have been most welcome! In the early evening, I sat on the glider with the warmth of the sun on my back and it was heaven. There are no potted plants yet, no hanging plants, no leaves on the trees. But I’ve got my porch back.

I continued to work on cleaning up the porch, sweeping every corner, cleaning off the ‘greenhouse’ sign, cleaning the former kitchen island, which is now…what? potting bench? porch dresser? I’m not sure.

It was already very chippy when we brought it outside, and we covered it with a tarp for the winter, but it’s definitely much chippier than it was. I don’t mind; you know I like that look. At some point, when it gets to be too much, I will probably repaint it with something more durable like porch paint.

I also made some more ‘cleanup’ inroads on the big garden bed. I have yet to clean up the memorial garden bed or the garden beds on the far side of the house, but this week will offer plenty of time to tackle that.

For today, I’ll take it easy. Don is arriving this evening and I don’t want to feel as tired as I have the past two nights when I pick him up at the bus station. Luckily, the weather is supposed to be lovely tomorrow, so he can really enjoy his time here.

I saw a bunny outside the kitchen window this morning. And last night, I ran and grabbed my telephoto lens so I could get a picture of someone dining way over on the other side of the driveway, under the lilac. (Taken from inside the living room or he would have run away.)

That’s our boy!

Happy Sunday.

Cleanup for Spring

April 12, 2018 at 9:53 am by Claudia

Jumping Jacks with (I now see) chalk dust on their heads/hats from the chalkboard which is just above them. Time for a little cleaning!

I worked outside yesterday for a few hours, starting in on the cleanup of the big garden bed. Clearing all the old growth, cutting back, getting down to the bare soil is always a huge task since I’m the only one doing it. I stood there, looking at everything, thinking, “Oh crap. How can I do all of this?” But I can. I just need to take it day by day.

Don and I were chatting this morning and both of us agreed that we need to see green things growing, flowers blooming and also: scent – we need to smell lilacs, etc. Perhaps because this winter has been so long, longer than usual, that feeling, that need, is more intense for us than ever. I hope that by the next time he comes home for a visit, things around here will be very different.

News flash: I saw Henry yesterday! He was lounging on the ramp to the shed. That’s how I know it was him – he loves to do that. Of course, in the space of time it took me to go get my camera (30 seconds?) he was spooked by something or other and disappeared. So maybe that was  Henry I saw the other day. I’m always so happy to see he’s still with us.

And I saw a tiny little bird take a drink from the birdbath. A sure sign of spring.

Today I’m having lunch with Rick and then we’re going to look for some houseplants for his sunroom. That will be fun!

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
