The Missing Earring & Bottlebrush Wreaths

December 12, 2016 at 8:37 am by Claudia

If you were following along on Instagram, you already know this story – so I’ll be brief. This earring is part of a pair of silver earrings that I have owned for many years. They’re long and dangly. The silver looks good with my hair. They’re my favorites.

The night before last, I was in the kitchen near the counter when I realized that one of them was falling out of my ear. I heard the sound of the earring scooting across the wood floor. I assumed it had ended up in the living room. So Don and I looked everywhere for it. Under tables, under furniture, under the baseboard heating, under rugs. We pulled out the piano, the stove and the refrigerator.

Nothing. It was as if the earring had flown away.

It was getting late, so we agreed to try again in the morning.

But yesterday morning, Don was busy working on the snowblower with a mechanically-inclined friend of his, so yours truly started looking on her own. Now, the night before, while down on my knees (let’s not talk about how that sort of thing hurts nowadays) I noticed lots of dust bunnies and cobwebs between china cabinets and the wall and general stuff I don’t see in the course of a day. So, I thought to myself, I’ll take a section of each room at a time, and along the way, I’ll clean, scrub, dust, eliminate cobwebs, and vacuum. And I did. Every stinking inch of the kitchen. Every stinking inch of the living room. Furniture moved, refrigerator once more moved away from the wall. Ditto for the stove. My knees and back were screaming. The thought occurred to me that even if I didn’t find the earring, at least the house would be really clean before I left for Hartford.

Nothing.

Later in the day, I posted on IG and got lots of suggestions from everyone. Did I try this? Did I try that? And honestly, I’d tried everything. I kept going back to that sound in my head of the earring sliding across the floor. It was so clear to me, such a strong sense memory.

One suggestion was from Cathy. Had any drawers been open at the time? I was sure the answer was no. Time passed. It was now early evening. I finally got up from my chair and thought: What the heck? I went to the kitchen and opened the drawer, which happened to be the silverware and random junk drawer, a drawer that I had opened and closed countless times during the day. I searched the junk. Nothing. At the last minute, I looked through the silverware. And there – under the forks – was the earring!

I shouted to Don. It had been there all the time and, clearly, the sound I heard was not that of the earring scooting across the floor but, instead, it was the earring scooting across the tile counter. Success! I’m thrilled to have the earring back and am grateful for all the suggestions.

But danged if my back doesn’t hurt today and I can’t help thinking, “Claudia, why the heck didn’t you look in the drawer in the first place??”

Did I get to Act 5? No. Too busy searching and cleaning. And then I went outside and moved everything from the porch that needed to be stored into the shed.

Yours truly is sore today.

While in the shed, I grabbed 3 out of 4 of my bottlebrush wreaths.

I hung one on the chimney. The remaining two are going with me to Hartford. They’ll look lovely hanging in the apartment windows.

I got these 6 or 7 years ago at Big Lots. Another blogger had posted about them and I, a lover of anything bottlebrush, went to the nearest Big Lots and scoured through boxes until I came up with the last four wreaths in the store. I love them. I haven’t had them up for the last couple of years, so it’s nice to see them again.

Yes, that’s snow you see out there. Don’s out there right now, using the snowblower. He has to get out of here because he has an audition in the city today. I will be finishing my initial work on the play and making lists of things to buy and things to pack. That’s the order for the day.

That painting was the very first oil my dad painted. I remember that vase. He also made the frame.

Happy Monday.

Plants, Animals and a Question

December 2, 2016 at 8:56 am by Claudia

12-2-sunrise

This morning’s sunrise, captured only because I ran outside to get the New York Times and happened to see it as I came back up the driveway. It was spectacular.

I hope the sun stays with us today. We’ve had hints of it over the last two days, but cloudy skies prevailed. We’re headed to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, so I’m asking Mother Nature to please let the sun shine throughout the day.

Do you remember last January/February when I was working in Hartford and I bought two tiny, tiny plants from the market to brighten up my apartment? You’ve seen that size – a very small pot with a starter plant.

Here’s the spider plant when I first brought it to the apartment:

Teeny tiny. And the pothos can be seen in the background in this picture:

That wee little spider plant has become rather large. In fact, it probably needs repotting.

12-2-spidertwo

As has the pothos (at least I’m pretty sure it’s a pothos.)

12-2-pothosonsill

Do I take them with me to Hartford to have a little greenery in the apartment? I’m still pondering that one. As you know, I pack a lot of stuff to make the apartment feel like home. Do I want to pack even more?

I’m already making lists.

But first, I have a lot of prep to do, as well as some Christmas shopping.

This really isn’t political as much as it’s an observation and question, but I’ll do a font change anyway.

My question of the day: Why do so many people fall for Fake News? I don’t understand it. It seems that anything can be floated out there and it will be swallowed, hook, line and sinker, by a shockingly large group of people. Have we lost the urge, the need, to fact check? Do people just rely on one news source and believe anything and everything they hear/read there?

I’m rather partial to facts. If I’m at all uncertain about a piece of information, I do some research. With computers so readily at hand these days, there’s really no excuse not to investigate. But it’s becoming evident that people believe what they want to believe and a shocking number of them have no desire to do anything but parrot what someone else has said – no matter if it’s a lie.

And that brings me to this: does thinking, challenging, and questioning make me one of the ‘elite?’ That, by the way, is a term I despise. Since when did getting an education, and often going deep into debt to get that education, become something that branded someone as ‘elite?’ I don’t care whether someone went to college or not, by the way. My husband didn’t get a college education and neither did my parents. Makes no difference to me. But I do have a problem with that word – elite. I’m proud that I have a Master’s Degree. I worked hard to get it. But, it doesn’t make me better or smarter than anyone else. And it doesn’t make me ‘elite.’ Neither does living on the East Coast or the West Coast, both of which I hear bandied about, especially during a presidential campaign.

Of course, the reality is that someone decided to use that term to put a negative spin on the ‘other.’ And it was repeated and repeated until it took and now we hear it all the time.

It’s a falsehood. Those who want to learn and pursue higher education are called the ‘elite’ and those who live high up in gilded towers in the biggest city on the East Coast are referred to as ‘the common man.’ What’s wrong with this picture?

Okay. I have to get a move on.

Happy Friday.

Cleaning, Sorting & Eating

November 25, 2016 at 9:34 am by Claudia

11-25-impatiensinkitchen

As the temperatures started to go well below freezing at night earlier this week, I grabbed a few of the potted impatiens to bring inside. Some might make it through the winter. Others? Time will tell. I figure I have nothing to lose. This little pot is doing rather nicely on the kitchen window sill. I plopped it in Don’s vintage metal Ponderosa Ranch mug.

11-25-crochetandplant

Even though we said we were not doing anything special for dinner yesterday, Don, while out and about, succumbed to the holiday atmosphere and ended up preparing a yummy vegetarian holiday meal. “Chicken” strips and sauteed green beans and onions, steamed green beans, mashed potatoes and veggie gravy, squash, jellied cranberry slices, salad, and stuffed mushrooms. I didn’t make biscuits – the only thing that was missing – but I’ll make them at Christmas.

And pumpkin pie, but we were too full to have any last night, so we’ll most definitely have some today.

While husband was foraging in the supermarket, I took on a task that I have been threatening to do for months. Sorting and purging in the craft/crap closet in the office. My one regret is that I didn’t get a ‘before’ shot. Believe me when I tell you that every available space on the shelves and on the floor was stacked high with STUFF. It was like those closets in cartoons where opening the door threatens to bring everything crashing to the floor.

In process:

11-25-messycloset

The contents of the closet were everywhere: in the hallway, in the bedroom, to the left of this shot and in front of the desk. Six trash bags were put outside near the shed. At least 4 bags of things to donate are now living in front of the sideboard downstairs.

11-25-tostorage

All of this is going to our storage space today; a big bin packed with things I want to save, an old computer that I don’t know what to do with (yes I know I can donate it, but it’s well and truly fried) and empty plastic storage boxes and wire bins. I cleared so much out of the closet that I don’t even need the storage boxes!

Huzzah!

11-25-cleanercloset

I understand that this doesn’t look all that exciting, but it is to me! Do you see that long box on the top wire shelf? That’s the box holding the parts for the Fairfield dollhouse: sheets of wood, templates, instructions, etc. That has been sitting on the floor in front of my china cabinet for months. Every – and I mean every – time I scooted my desk chair away from the desk, I would hit that darned box. It was making me crazy. It now has a home on that shelf, along with the pieces I’ve already assembled.

On top of it is the wrapping paper used on my birthday presents. The dragonfly design is so pretty that I’m saving it.

11-25-lampshade

I also had a minor creative burst. I figured out how to store this vintage lampshade that I got from Christie Repasy’s shop several years ago. It used to be on the floor lamp in the living room, but that lamp bit the dust. I realized I could tie it to the rod. That way it would be up off the floor and the fringe wouldn’t be smashed. Bingo!

Silly, I know, but this has been looming over me for a while, so getting it done is a big deal. I still have to tackle three other closets, but this one might be the only one I get done before I have to start my research and eventually leave for Hartford.

The desktop got a cleaning, as well as my craft worktop.

11-25-office

You most likely can’t see the difference, but I can.

I listened to great singers, past and present, singing the American Songbook on Jonathan Schwartz’s radio show via my Bose/bluetooth speaker and I was a happy camper.

Little Z is doing much, much better. He was, according to Meredith, at about 90% by yesterday afternoon. Bless his heart, that boy went through so much. Best Thanksgiving present there could be – Z’s homecoming. Did I ever tell you I was very ill when I was newly born? I turned blue and had complications that kept me in the hospital. I was born the week before Thanksgiving and I wasn’t released until Thanksgiving Day. For years and years, my father would say the blessing at the Thanksgiving table and would always add a thank you for my homecoming.

Don and I kept thinking about that as Little Z was released in time for Thanksgiving with his family.

Happy Friday.
