Office Space

November 6, 2015 at 7:59 am by Claudia

11-6 laptop and crochet

While I’ve been here at my sister’s house and have had to make a lot of phone calls and do a lot of paperwork, I’ve been setting up my computer in her office/studio. An office/studio that I encouraged her to set up, by the way. She did a beautiful job and it’s lovely. She has space for all of her yarn and a work table for looms and sewing machines, bookcases, and, of course, this desk space.

If you remember, we had a little discussion in my comments section recently about my lack of any sort of usable work space. The fact is, I have a little desk downstairs that isn’t at all practical; try though I might, it’s too small and I never use it except to store paperwork. I have my sewing table upstairs in my little studio niche, but again – very small and not practical.

Our guest room/studio/office at home has a large bed that is used approximately 3 times a year. If that. So I took my plight to Don and asked if we can finally get rid of the bed and change the room into a joint office space. We have an Aero bed that is fine for one person (but not so comfortable for two). We have a sofa in the den that is very comfortable.

He’s on board. We just have to get rid of the bed and then I can save up my pennies for a desk. I’d move my hall cupboard in there and move the linen cupboard out into the hall. My grandmother’s trunk – which takes up a large chunk of space – would be moved into the niche in the hallway or downstairs where the little white desk is. The sewing table would be an extension of my desk, making it an L shape. And I could work on my minis there, as well.

The fact is, I have a lot of paperwork that needs to be filed and available in one place – receipts for work out of town, files for my coaching work, blog receipts, dialect sheets – and it’s spread out all over the house.

Frankly, I’m sick of it.

I’m a girl without an office. I’m a nomad.

Don and I will share that space, so it will include several guitars, speakers and amps. Hopefully, I’ll find a way to make that work.

11-6 desk

Working in this little office has only confirmed the fact that it’s time to make a change. (Yes, I was munching on some chips.) And since Don and I will rarely be in that space at the same time, it should all work out beautifully.

Today, more phone calls and paperwork. I can’t believe it’s already been one week since my father died. It doesn’t seem real to me yet.

You do know, don’t you, that I write in this space because it’s important to me? Because it can be cathartic? Because the routine of it is comforting? Trust me, if I just can’t post one day, I won’t. Okay? When I wrote about blogging yesterday, I was speaking of reading other  blogs. Just as it’s hard for me to concentrate on a novel at the moment, it’s hard for me to concentrate on blogs.

Happy Friday.

In the Thick of It

October 14, 2015 at 9:29 am by Claudia

10-14 gazing ball

Goodness, we’re really in the thick of Autumn. More and more trees are changing color, more and more leaves are on the ground, on the roof, in the gutters. That golden light that comes only in the fall is everywhere.

I like it.

Flannel pajamas? Check.

Shawl? Check.

Reading by lamplight in the early morning? Check.

10-14 leaf

I ran some errands yesterday – very efficiently, I might add. I went to Target, grabbed precisely what I had on my list and got out of there. Same with Michael’s. I stopped at the bookstore, just because it was there. But I hadn’t planned on buying anything and I didn’t.

I have a little project in mind for the TSP. I’m going to work on it this weekend – which is why I stopped at Michael’s. Don and Dan have two gigs in Massachusetts this weekend. And they have the CD release party on Saturday night, of course. But while they’re in Massachusetts, I can work on something for Don’s studio, without worrying about him coming in the door at any minute.

I just finished S is for Silence  by Sue Grafton. Now it’s on to T is for Trespass.

10-14 hydrangea

This is the color of the Endless Summer Hydrangea, which is right outside our kitchen door. It’s a vivid, bright purply-pink. Between the hydrangeas and the zinnias and morning glories, that part of the property is gorgeous with color.

Scout is getting a bath today. We’ll all be tired out after that ordeal.

We’ve found out that because of my dad’s compression fracture, he had to be coded as under observation. We’re running into problems concerning just what facility he’s going to, and we’re determined to eventually get him into the rehab facility nearby. I’ll fill you in as we learn more. Suffice to say, Meredith and I have been burning up the phone lines.

Be sure to stop by Just Let Me Finish This Page where I’m asking the burning question: What are you Reading?

Happy Wednesday.

Chatty on Tuesday

10-13 anniversary

•  Self-portrait, shot on the porch at Cracker Barrel yesterday. Or should it be Selves-portrait? I’m trying to avoid the use of the word ‘selfie’ if at all possible.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know we went for the big bucks and celebrated at Cracker Barrel. I know, you’re thinking that we really went all out for this anniversary.

Actually, we love Cracker Barrel but go there rarely. We’re low key about celebrations, so when Don suggested CB, I was in. As it was it took us forever to get there because of all the traffic. Thousands and thousands of people head up to our neck of the woods on fall weekends and, inevitably, they have to head back home, causing traffic back-ups for miles. It’s a pain in the you-know-what. But we got there and, of course, had to wait for a table. By the time we sat down, we were starved!

Then we watched the Mets play the Dodgers. (I love the Red Sox, but I also love the Mets.) They won.

10-13 quilt on chair

•  The nights are getting very cold. Quilts and throws are making an appearance.

10-13 quilt on bed

This bed cover is very heavy, so I usually stash it on the chair in the summer months. But it’s back on the bed, keeping us snug and warm as we transition to cooler nights.

•  Here’s a random thought:

10-13 imperialstormtrooper

Every time I look at my vacuum, I think of the Imperial Stormtroopers from Star Wars.

Is it just me? I’ve thought that since the day it arrived in the mail.

It’s a Shark Navigator, by the way, and it’s fabulous. And far less expensive than the over-priced Dyson. Just as in the theater or film, we Americans seem to be taken in by a British accent.

This vacuum is a especially great with dog hair and we have a lot of it around here.

•  My dad is still in the hospital. They’ve found a fracture in his spine which needs to be treated with either injections that might be dangerous for a 92 year old man, or physical therapy. The doctor says he cannot be on his own right now and has recommended physical therapy, so that means he has to move to rehab facility after they’ve finished running tests. We thought he would go to the same rehab facility that both of my parents have spent time in, which is right next to the hospital and just a few miles from my sister.

But no. Medicaid has managed to screw everything up. Their ‘rules’ about things sometimes drive me up the wall. When my dad was admitted to the hospital, it was coded as ‘under observation.’ For some ridiculous reason, that particular code means my father will now be forced to go to one of two facilities, both of which are about 45 minutes to an hour away from home. Don’t ask me why. My sister works long hours at her job and has a four year old to take care of when she’s not at work. Driving that far will make it impossible for her to see dad more than once – maybe twice – a week. I can’t get down there right now. Needless to say, we’re very frustrated. The rehab facility where we thought he would go would have been perfect for him. Everyone knows him there – their presence would make it all so much easier for him.

• For those of you who have found that Don’s CD is temporarily out-of-stock, hang in there. CD Baby only keeps a small amount on hand because, as you can imagine, they stock CDs for thousands of musicians. We’ll be sending them more today and they should be available shortly. I’ll let you know when they’re back in stock.

Okay. Long post.

Thank you so much for the anniversary wishes yesterday. We loved reading them. You are all wonderful, a true blessing in my life.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
