Potting the Pothos

September 23, 2012 at 8:52 am by Claudia

You’d think, with all the McCoy Pottery pieces I own, I’d use one of the planters as an actual planter.

Nope.

Most everything is on display, scattered throughout the house.

Then I rooted a bit of Pothos and found myself immediately thinking about running to the store for a little terracotta pot.

Wait a minute. Hold on.

I love this planter and I own two of them. Why not use one for the plant and have one on display?

Yes, I know it’s a wacky idea to actually use one’s pottery collection. But why the heck not?

I exaggerate a bit here. I plop flowers into my McCoy vases all the time.

I have another bit of Pothos rooting at the moment. A long stem had apparently broken off the mother plant, which is in the bathroom, and my husband had tossed it in the waste basket.

I’m not kidding.

Thankfully, my speedy rescue resulted in yet another piece of pothos taking root in a mason jar and that one will eventually join the other in the McCoy pot.

Signing off,

The Pothos Whisperer.

Linking to Elaine’s Sunny Simple Sunday.

Happy Sunday.

The Missing Meticulous Housekeeper Gene

July 10, 2012 at 8:03 am by Claudia

A camera, bright morning sunlight, my favorite pieces of pottery. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

It is.

But it also reveals how desperately in need of a good washing and dusting these pieces are.

My goodness.

Ahem. I’m embarrassed.

As a certified pottery loving lunatic, I have pieces everywhere here at the cottage. Some are behind glass doors and are spared the indignity of dust and grime. Many, however, are on countertops or the piano or the coffee table or on top of the kitchen cupboards.

The ones on top of the kitchen cupboards? I don’t even want to look.

I deliberately haven’t shown you the worst examples. I have some pride.

It’s time for a good cleaning.

Do you regularly clean and dust all the china or pottery that you have on display? Are you a meticulous housekeeper?

Or are you like me; someone who likes to see everything displayed prettily but seems to lack a bit of consistency on the cleaning end of things? I just might be missing the Meticulous Housekeeper Gene.

Do tell!

Happy Tuesday.

Color Serendipity

November 2, 2011 at 5:00 am by Claudia

I’ve noticed a certain color combination appearing in my home, specifically in the kitchen.

This combination of red and aqua/robins egg blue/turquoise/sea glass – whatever you want to call it.

I didn’t plan it this way. As most often happens in my decorating life, these things just evolve over time. When we moved into the cottage 6 years ago, though I’m not especially enamored of window coverings, I ordered these roman shades. The kitchen has so many windows and Don was going to be away working and I didn’t feel entirely comfortable being on display as I cooked and washed dishes in the evening.

The red came long before the blue.

Then I started to fall in love with blue. But not dark blue. No, I fell for all of the various manifestations of aqua in my McCoy Pottery collection. Those particular blues made me very happy, indeed. Soon, the chalkboard was painted in that color.

Then I painted the hanger for the jumping jacks in a slightly different shade of blue.

And one day, not so long ago, I realized that I had combined it with red. It’s there in the jumping jacks. And the bench. And a pillow.

It’s there in the red chair in the living room that we’ve had for years.

Funny how these things happen.

Then I looked at my blog yesterday.

And there it is again!

Now I see it everywhere. On Pinterest, on blogs – especially this one.

I am officially smitten. And it appeared in my home by happy accident. Serendipity.

Pretty neat.

Do you have a favorite color combination?

Remember tomorrow is Reality Shot Thursday. And once again, I find myself scheduled for 2 posts as I’m also doing a book review. Double the pleasure!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
