Cutting a Rug

May 7, 2016 at 9:47 am by Claudia

Weather forecast? Rain. If you were to visit Mockingbird Hill Cottage, you’d encounter two adults valiantly trying to stay positive in the midst of six plus days of almost-constant rain. We have been aided in that quest by watching the first episode of the second season of Grace and Frankie on Netflix and by watching the gloriously talented Adele in concert (aired last night on NBC).

Adele is the real deal, a throwback to the days when a singer would come onstage, plant his/her feet and just sing. No auto tune. No frenetic and distracting dancers in the background. No vocal pyrotechnics that shout, “Look at what I can do!” instead of actually telling a story in song. We love her. She’s modest, funny, and has a voice that is husky and powerful and brave. She writes her own material but I secretly hope that someday she records some old standards because I’d love to hear what she does with them.

I have her first album and now we need to get the second album. Don can’t stop talking about her this morning.

Speaking of singing, Don has a gig with his friend Dan tonight. Fortunately, it happens to be in our little town. I’ll be attending, of course.

Yesterday I worked on the TSP.

Don. Stop reading.

I wanted some stonework along the base, reminiscent of the very old stonework that is the foundation for our circa-1891 cottage. I briefly toyed with making the stonework and even bought a product that I thought would be perfect. It turned out to be not-so-perfect. So I went the much easier route and purchased an embossed-on-paper granite stonework. From Hobby Builders Supply/miniatures.com.

5-7 stoneworkonbase

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, photos are particularly difficult during these gray, rainy days. This one is a little less than crisp. But you get the idea.

5-7 stoneworkonbase2

It turns out to be perfectly fine. I like it. And it was fairly quick and easy.

I’m in the midst of painting the deck/porch and today I’ll slap on a coat of varnish.

Arriving in the mail yesterday:

5-7 rug

This gorgeous rug from Dale’s Dreams. She has an Etsy shop and also sells at miniature shows. I have to say this is the best miniature rug that I have ever seen, and I’m not talking about the pattern, which I love, but about the heft and quality. It looks entirely three-dimensional and there is a backing applied to the rug that gives it weight. A lot of mini rugs – though lovely – are pretty one-dimensional. Many of the rugs in Hummingbird Cottage are one-dimensional. This one is amazing. That’s a splash of red-orange in the middle of the pattern.

Now I’ve moved the other rug over to the recording area, which is where I had always planned to have a rug, a stool, a microphone (if I can ever find one I like) and a guitar. I’m not sure whether this rug itself will make the final cut, but for now, I like it.

That stool came from Hobby Builders Supply. I’m not sure whether I’m going to paint it, age it, or stain it. But this shows you the look I’m going for.

By the way, I’m not at all concerned with the colors being matchy-matchy. Don is a big fan of color so I’m giving it to him!

It’s taking shape, this little project!

Happy Saturday.

A New Arrival and a Note

May 5, 2016 at 8:08 am by Claudia

You do know, of course, that there are times I am going to write about politics? Because there are. If you don’t like that, you are free to move on. Posting daily about my life and passions means that sometimes the content isn’t going to be cute and pretty, but it will always be from my heart. I have a lot of interests and strong opinions. If you haven’t gleaned that from reading this blog, then you’ve clearly been missing something! The truth is: I determine the content on the blog. It’s about my life. And a great deal of my life lately has been about politics. So there you go.

I work hard at varying the daily content of this blog, but I won’t censor my subject matter on any given day for fear that some readers will be unhappy. That’s when a blog loses the author’s voice. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve never taken a poll here asking my readers what they want to see on the blog. I assume that if you’re here, there’s something that appeals to you. But not everything is going to appeal to you and that’s just fine. I’m very protective of the integrity of this blog and the authenticity of my voice. It’s always going to be real life, warts and all.

Don: Stop here.

Okay. On to something ‘cute.’ This arrived in the mail yesterday, all the way from Thailand!

5-5 Macbox1

Check out the packaging. This is from Lilu Miniatures on Etsy. The packaging, the presentation, the careful packing – all of it is impeccable.

The back of the box:

5-5 Macbox2

I was so excited as I opened this!

Inside:

5-5 macfront

Excuse the graininess – it was, of course, dark and rainy yesterday, and I was quickly taking photos before I had to leave for Hartford.

5-5 macback

Unbelievable perfection.

5-5 ondesk

Doesn’t that look cool? I’m in love. (Caroline is going to be jealous. She has a small laptop.)

5-5 ondeskclose

Gosh, darn it! I love working with miniatures. I am well and truly hooked on them.

As each new item arrives in my mailbox, I get more and more excited. Tomorrow, I’m going to do some work on the outside of the TSP.

Today, I’ll be attending a run-through of Anastasia. Can’t wait to see it!

And then I’ll be on the road again, driving back to the cottage.

Happy Thursday.

Take a Seat

May 3, 2016 at 9:57 am by Claudia

Weather forecast? Rain. End of story.

Don. Simply stop here.

A bright spot yesterday – a package arrived in the mail from Elf Miniatures in England.

By the way, I want to clarify something: none of these links are affiliates or partners or anything other than companies I’ve ordered from and like very much. I understand affiliate links and I use them on the book blog occasionally, though I earn next-to-nothing from them – just enough to use as a credit toward a future book purchase! But I’ve seen a lot  of affiliate links lately on other blogs and I must admit that too much of that sort of thing turns me off. Does every post have to be the result of a partnership?

So if you see a link to a miniature site or source here, it simply takes you to that site. I get nothing from you clicking on the link, except satisfaction in recommending a good source. (There’s a source list up in the navigation bar, also – under Dollhouse.)

Back to Elf Miniatures, an online company I really like – fast delivery across the ocean, great customer service, and a fabulous inventory of all things miniature. I ordered 3 items.

5-3 shelfverticalfromside

Well, I meant to order two. I got three items because, for the second time, I ordered two  of something; this shelf unit, which is reminiscent of the IKEA units that are so popular. I have one in real life. Anyway, getting two of them is okay by me. I’ll use the other one in another project

I want to use this for records, but it has quickly dawned on me that I have to get a lot more albums! Oh, my heavens! Where am I going to get them all? I can purchase some through Etsy. I could make them, I suppose, and I’ll try to do some of that. My friend Susi, of Minibase, did that for her award winning Record Shop. Click on over at some point and see it. It’s incredible. She has even posted a very helpful tutorial on the subject of making albums.

5-3 shelfvertical

See? I’m going to need a lot of record albums!

Also in the box that traveled across the ocean:

5-3 chair

5-3 deskchair from distance

This oh-so-cool desk chair.

5-3 deskchairfacingkeyboard

I love it. I can see the gentleman who uses this studio swiveling between a computer monitor and the keyboard, completely into his creative process. I bet you can, too.

Still going back and forth about the legs. I was just about to paint them silver/chrome yesterday afternoon when I decided to hold off. Today, I like the orange. Tomorrow? Who knows?

I mentioned that I made a preliminary stab at a mixing board. Really, what I did was build a three-dimensional housing for it, like I’ve seen in many home studio photos. It’s made out of mat board.

5-3 soundmixingboard

There it is. From here, it looks okay.

5-3 soundmixingboardclose

From here, the top is clearly one-dimensional. I’m not thrilled with that. I can probably fiddle with it and add some elements that give it dimension – like a knob and silver bits that function as those slides. The jury is still out on this one.

5-3 viewonarainyday

A rainy day view of where we are so far.

I have to do some work on the outside. I have a few more elements on order. But I’ve got about seven weeks, give or take a day or so, until Don’s birthday. So I’m in good shape, I think.

Blogkeeping: I usually have the volume on my computer turned all the way down because I dislike suddenly hearing something I didn’t plan on hearing. But lately, I’ve had it on a few times when an ad or two on this blog started making itself known via sound. I don’t like that. And, in fact, ads are not supposed to automatically play. The visitor to a site is supposed to be able to turn it on if he or she wants to, but otherwise, it should be mute. So I have my ad company looking into it and, if I have to, I’ll stop all video ads. My apologies. I’d rather earn a bit less than have intrusive sound on the blog.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
