Water Lily, Number 5

June 30, 2021 at 8:53 am by Claudia

Number 5 is finished, unless I tweak it a bit more today.

Water Lily, one of my favorite pieces. I distinctly remember bidding on it on eBay.

I learn something every time I tackle a painting. I am reminded that I am new to this, so I have to be kind to myself while challenging myself to grow. I love really getting to know these pieces of pottery in a way I didn’t before I studied them in detail. And the result is that I fall in love with them again.

I’m not sure what the next piece will be – I have a lot of small pieces and low-to-the-surface planters, etc., but I think the higher, more vertical pieces are best for these studies – at least, right now.

I sat in the kitchen, sweating, for two hours in order to finish this one yesterday. One more day of this dreadful heat and humidity and then we’re going to get thunderstorms and rain for the next couple of days as the system breaks up and moves out. Our brains are mush. Don put the container of dry brown rice away in the refrigerator instead of the pantry. Whoops. Half the time we don’t know what day it is.

Oh wait a minute…that’s normal for us.

I water around 7 am and keep refilling the birdbath all day. Speaking of birds, yesterday, I noticed a robin up in the branch of the black walnut tree right outside our kitchen. He kept moving around and I thought he might be preening himself.  Today, I looked out there and realized he’s making a nest. I mean it when I say it’s right outside our window. Very close to the house. So this morning we watched him work and work at making his nest. He sort of stamps his feet to tamp down the nest materials and his whole body vibrates. I’m going to take some photos.

Of course, this means we’re eventually in for another round of chirping and attacks. But watching all of this happen is an incredible opportunity, so we’ll put up with it.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Hazy, Hot, and Humid

June 28, 2021 at 8:35 am by Claudia

I’m still working on the shape of this vase. I thought I got it down yesterday (after this picture was taken) but as I look at it this morning, I realize I have corrections to make. None of this is helped by the weather. We had a heat advisory yesterday, another today, and it will go on until later in the week. It is very hot and very humid here. Consequently, I have a small window in which to paint because I don’t want the air conditioner blowing fumes from the oil paint all over the kitchen.

I am not a morning person, but I’ve already watered the garden, paid the bills so Don can mail them, started a load of laundry, and watered all the houseplants. And I haven’t even had my second cup of coffee! Have to get everything done early in this weather.

Sorry about the lack of a post yesterday. Sometimes I’m faced with technical problems on the blog, which have to be dealt with. I had to call my host and, frankly, the guy I spoke to wasn’t any help. Usually, they are very helpful, but we had a language barrier (turns out he was in the Philippines) and he didn’t understand what I was trying my best to explain. I turned to my security company and, because it was a Sunday, they took a while to get back to me. In the meantime, I discovered the solution to my other problem which had to do with my browser and an extension I was using. Once I dealt with that, everything was back to normal. Problems that were, in the end, very minor.

Sigh. It does make for a tedious day.

So, I’m back at it.

If you’re dealing with this same weather pattern, stay hydrated and stay inside.

By the way, I read that the World Health Organization is recommending that fully vaccinated persons should wear a mask in public places, especially indoors, because of the Delta variant, which is spreading quickly and has, in some cases, infected those who were fully vaccinated. I still wear a mask in the stores and it looks like my instinct about this variant was right.

So…stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Thoughts on Age and Creativity

June 22, 2021 at 9:49 am by Claudia

C’est fini.

It isn’t perfect. Every time I look at it, I see something that I should have tweaked. Then I remind myself that this is a process and I’m learning. At some point, I have to say it’s finished and move on. (Though I don’t mind telling you that I may tweak it a little later today. But just a little.)

This is the Snowberry pattern and this particular vase is on the petite side, much smaller than the others I’ve painted. Don has always referred to it as Mae West, rather voluptuous and sassy. If vases can have a sense of humor, this one certainly does.

Don and I have been talking off and on about the creative process and age. Both of us seem to be in the midst of exploring new-to-us areas of creativity. And that brings me to this thought: Never let a number define you. Never let it define or restrict the possibilities or the potential that lies ahead.

I think it’s so important to keep our minds sharp as we age. I know many of you feel the same way. Reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, exercise, learning….all that and more helps to keep us sharp. I know I have to guard against a negative reaction to the numbers; my age, the possible lifespan ahead of me, the years behind me, and all the fears those numbers can generate. I fight it all the time. All the time.

When Don says, “We’re old” I counter immediately, with “We’re older.” That’s as far as I’m willing to go with that line of thinking. I look in the beautiful face of my husband, who will be 70 in two days, and think that he’s more beautiful than ever, that he’s grown into who he really is, that there is an ease with himself I didn’t always see in the past. I watch him explore things, challenge himself, learn new instruments, write beautiful music and lyrics…he’s constantly creating.

I think we inspire each other that way. Sure, there are times when the inspiration to create something new seems to be lacking. So we recharge, read, do chores, meditate, go for a walk. Eventually, something sets off a spark, and we’re back at it.

You never know what new horizons are ahead of you. I’m 68 years old. Even as recently as two months ago, if you had asked me if I could draw or paint, I would have answered NO without hesitation. Absolutely not. I was very clear on that.

But a voice deep inside me kept nudging me toward painting. Here and there, momentary thoughts of “Maybe painting?” came and went. After about two years of these nudges, I began to consider it. Hesitantly, for sure, but I started to give those thoughts time and space, no longer rejecting them out of hand. And as I’ve said before, I eventually confided them to Don, making that tiny possibility more real.

I am not one to talk about faith because I believe it’s a private, sacred thing. It’s my business and not anyone else’s. I have an aversion to what I perceive to be preachiness. Having said that, whatever your belief system, whatever your spirituality, whatever path you follow, there is something deep within us that guides us. Of that I am sure.

Keep those channels open: listen, ponder, take action. Don’t give up or say things like, “I’m too old to try something new.”  “I don’t have the talent for (fill in the blank).” We all fall prey to that kind of thinking. I know I do. Instead, respond with “Why not? Why not try?” The worse thing that could happen is the realization that something you’ve tried just isn’t your cup of tea. Okay. Now you know. Move on to something new.

Creativity is ageless. We are all creating, all the time.

New. Possible. Explore. Create. Challenge. Discover.

None of that is limited by age.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
