The Road Trip

March 10, 2016 at 7:25 am by Claudia

We woke up Tuesday morning and were chatting about the upcoming trip. It was a beautiful day. Don, being a spontaneous guy, suggested we leave in a few hours instead of waiting until Wednesday. I said yes. (Very unlike me!) So we headed out around noon on Tuesday and it’s now Thursday.

3-10 sunset on the road

It’s been nice, but tiring. We didn’t sleep much the first night on the road, so we were going on less than four hours of sleep yesterday. Exhausted is putting it mildly. Still, we soldiered on, debating whether to take one highway or the other. I wanted to see Asheville NC, so we went a bit out of our way to head up into the Smokies and visit.

It was disappointing. Now, let me say that we were really, really tired. And it ended up being around 5:00 pm when we got there. We were hungry and cranky. And we didn’t have time to see the Biltmore Estate or the Grove Park Inn, both of which I would like to see someday. Asheville was just plain bigger than we had imagined. I don’t know what we were visualizing, but something smaller and charming and tucked into the mountains? We drove around the downtown area and I could see there are a lot of neat shops and restaurants. Someday, when I’m rested and I have an entire day to explore, I think I’d like it. But I’m not real big on going in a lot of shops, so who knows? Anyway, I ended up feeling guilty that I had taken us so far out of our way to go there.

Although, we both mentioned that it looked like a place in which we could quite happily live.

We ended up spending the night outside of Spartanburg, SC. Don’s still sleeping so I thought I’d grab a chance to get online.

3-10 overlookSmokies

A scenic overlook in the Smokies. Lovely view. We, of course, have mountains within spitting distance of our cottage, so this view is not unlike what we can see when we go hiking. The Smokies are beautiful; I can only imagine how lovely they must be later in Spring.

The farms and beautiful, stately farmhouses that we’ve seen along the way, the cattle grazing on the rolling hills, the beautiful barns – all of that is just gorgeous.

At two different points, we saw the Confederate flag on display. Not a smallish version, no, a huge flag on a giant flagpole, flying rather defiantly so that all who drove by on the Interstate could see it. This Northerner found it rather shocking. Oh, there’s some yahoo who lives near us who drives by with a Confederate flag flying on his car aerial (can’t imagine why he’s living in Upstate NY) but that’s the closest I’ve come to what I saw yesterday. In the current political climate it seems rather like the flip of a giant finger. Unsettling. As is so much going on today, but that’s another post.

The day before we left, I walked around the property to see if there were any signs of ‘green.’

3-10 daylily

Huzzah! Day Lily shoots.

3-10 daffodils

Daffodils.

3-10 lilac

Lilac buds.

The weather back home is very warm for this time of year. It should reach the mid-seventies today. It will be interesting to see what all of this looks like when I get back.

We will get to Meredith’s either today or mid-day tomorrow.

Depending on when Don gets out of bed this morning.

Happy Thursday.

Tuesday Stream of Consciousness

March 8, 2016 at 8:21 am by Claudia

3-8 sunset

• Another glorious sunset. Our house faces west, so as I sit in my chair or go about my business in the living room, this is what I see.

• Trip plans: We’re heading out tomorrow morning. Cannot wait. I’m currently plotting a route down to Florida that avoids the hell that is the Washington D.C. area and, instead, takes us through some beautiful country – courtesy of my Facebook friends. As I looked at the map today, I got those anticipatory butterflies that I get when I am about to explore and see something new.

When I was on the road more, especially when I worked for a theatrical touring company, I loved to explore whatever city I was in. I’m always up for getting out, walking around, exploring, and learning new things. Dallas; Cedar Falls, Iowa; Owensboro, KY; Gainesville, FL; Ft.Lauderdale, FL; Birmingham, AL; Charleston, SC – just a few of the places I was able to explore when I was on the road for a few days here and a few days there. Often, I had to pick up a car rental and drive many miles from the airport to the theater and I’d explore along the way.

Don loves car trips. It will be fun.

• Yesterday. This arrived….

3-8 doublebudvase1

I know. I succumbed again.

It’s a double bud vase in the Clematis pattern. Need I say that it was a great score on eBay? It was.

3-8 doublebudvase2

The other side. Isn’t it beautiful? Several Roseville patterns have their own version of this double bud vase. As crazy about Roseville as I am, I can see collecting all of them.

Stop me.

3-8 rosevilleonshelf

There it is on the shelf; though I’ve since changed it out with the basket that Barbara sent to me. The double bud vase is now in the china cabinet in the den. I can see it from my blogging chair.

I may change that. We’ll see.

Can one have too much vintage pottery? My short answer: No.

3-8 geranium

• My over-wintering geranium is blooming again! This little experiment was a complete success. I’ve been watering all the plants so they’ll be nice and moist while we’re gone. Even the succulents got a dash of water.

• Blogging Etiquette Question: Am I the only one who gets irritated when I see posts from bloggers where lots of photos are taken directly from a post on another site/blog? It seems wrong to me. Yes, they usually link back to the original source, but if they’re basically taking all the photos from the original post, who is going to click the link? (And often the name of the original blog is hidden – you have to click through to find out who it was.)

It seems a bit like cheating. The blogger gets a post out of it without doing any of the work. Not quite fair, I think. Though perhaps the photos get a wider audience? Still, it doesn’t sit right. Far better, in my humble opinion, to say something like, “You should see this wonderful home or apartment or miniature or whatever that I saw elsewhere – here’s the link.” And then the original poster gets the hits, which is the way it should be.

Just wondering. It’s been bugging me a lot lately.

Lots to do today.

Happy Tuesday.

2-21 home

Home. Masses of packing yesterday morning. Masses of unpacking yesterday afternoon. Thank goodness, Don was in Hartford, too – he took a load of things home in his car. I stayed a  bit longer to pack up my car and do some last minute cleaning in the apartment.

We had a lovely time together in Hartford. On Friday, we stopped at Blue State Coffee for some coffee for Don and hot chocolate for me. We spent a couple of hours at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Don loved it there, as I knew he would. We wandered back to the apartment and donned our opening night duds. We had dinner at Salute, an Italian restaurant with great food and service, and then went to the theater. The show was wonderful. I, of course, have seen it a lot, and watching Don watching it was a huge treat. The Opening Night Party took place right after the show. Don got to meet everyone, though he already knew Darko and Kandis (our friend who plays the Nurse.)

A long, but wonderful, day.

I’m proud of my work on Romeo and Juliet. And it’s awfully rewarding to see that work show in the growth of the actors onstage. To see it pay off. It’s also very rewarding to hear them express their appreciation and thanks. It makes it all worth it.

I know I love seeing Don with his colleagues when I get to see him onstage. I love seeing him through their eyes, watching him interact with them, seeing the respect and admiration they feel for him. He feels the same way about me, and he was definitely the proud husband on Friday night.

He gets it.

Now, we’re back home…recovering.

And of course, being back home is bittersweet for me. Everywhere I go, I see emptiness where Scout should be. This morning I automatically started to look for her water dish to make sure it had enough water in it. I looked for her when I came downstairs this morning. I looked for her when I unlocked the door yesterday afternoon. I’m experiencing what Don has already experienced over the past two weeks, a cottage without our girl.

There is a quiet in the house that is filled with her absence. We’ve lived here for ten years and she has always been here with us. I broke down last night and cried. I miss her so much and I still can’t believe she’s gone. I would give anything to have her back. To be her mom again.

Her ashes are waiting for us at the animal hospital. We’re not quite ready for that experience yet. When we’re ready, we’ll go together and bring them home.

Oh, Scoutie, you are missed by your mom and dad. You are missed.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
