Where Was I?

What do you think?

Where do you think I went yesterday when I was in NYC?

Cue Jeopardy music.

Okay. I’ll tell you. B & H Photo – my favorite camera store in the world. I was buying my Christmas present. A new camera!!!

This is a very extravagant Christmas present for this family, but we pooled some gift money we had on hand and some of my ad income and Etsy income and, and, and…..I got this camera:

753762

Eeeek! I am so friggin’ excited I cannot tell you. I am over the moon.

But, as always, when I buy something that I consider extravagant for myself, I feel guilty.

A list of what ifs goes through my head. What if something goes wrong? What if that money is needed for something else? Do you do that? Please reassure me that I’m not a selfish brat. Don’t say anything if you think I am a selfish brat.

But this is about my blog and my Etsy shop and taking my photos to the next level.

And I love, love, love photography.

I took the bus in. Took care of some quick business when I first arrived. Walked to B & H from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Went upstairs to cameras and told the lovely lady who waited on me what I wanted (I had printed out the items from their website.) B & H, if you’ve never been there, has the most amazing system. You place your order, it’s entered into the computer, at some point during your conversation a blue box pops up from the bowels of the store with your items in it, the clerk scans all the codes but hangs on to the box, you are given a receipt, and you go downstairs to pay. In the meantime, your order travels on an elevated trolley system and somehow ends up downstairs, bagged and ready for you once you’ve paid your bill. This place is unbelievable. And it’s always packed with people, especially at this time of year. I mean, there were hundreds of people buying things there, yet the lines moved quickly and efficiently. I got there around 11:10. I was out of there and back at Port Authority by 11:45. That includes walking about 10 city blocks each way. I hopped on the 12:30 bus and was back home by 2:15.

Since it was a rainy day (endless rain lately) and it was dark, the photos I took have lamp light in them. Not the optimum scenario, but look how great they came out! I took these without doing any reading of the manual. I was experimenting with focusing on one item and blurring the background.

And of course, I had to take a picture of Scout.  She was thinking, of course, where is my food?

There’s a little orb in the dollhouse photo, but I sort of like it. And let me tell you, I have never been able to get a photo of the exterior of the dollhouse that I like. Now, I have.

Look how great the doily lamp looks, so clear, so wonderful.

Bokeh. I’ve been a wanting a camera lens that can do that. Bokeh: the way a lens renders out-of-focus points of light. (Wikipedia)

I’m in heaven.

I have much to learn but it will keep me busy while I’m missing my husband.

And I have some work coming up at the end of next week, a few days on a play my friend is directing in Hartford. 3 days next week and 2 more when the play goes into tech rehearsals during the second week of January. I have to decide what to do with Scout – do I take her with me and worry constantly whether she will bark when I’m at rehearsal (and she well might, she’d be nervous) or do I board her at my Vets. I’ve never boarded her because she was a rescue and I didn’t want to do that to her, but she just stayed at the Vets for 2 days when she was sick and she knows everyone. I’d know she was safe. Advice?

I’m off to play with my camera.

Happy, happy, happy.

Oh, a new scarf in the shop:

Happy Wednesday.

My Christmas Wish List

December 5, 2012 at 8:30 am by Claudia

Let me just say this right up front. This is my fantasy list. My if-all-my-dreams-could-come-true list. I’m a realist but it’s sure fun to dream.

What the heck, let’s take a trip down fantasy lane. Why not?

1. A pair of jeans that not only fit but last – Is this asking too much? How hard can it be to find a pair of jeans that actually fit my middle-aged body? No low riders. No skinny jeans. But no boring shapeless jeans, either. The last pair I bought, and it wasn’t all that long ago, the jeans I considered my good jeans? Imagine my surprise about a week ago when I took them off and discovered they had split up the backside. I’m not kidding. And I haven’t gained but a couple of pounds. It is clearly a flaw in the denim and I was not happy. The other day I bought a replacement pair of jeans on sale, brought them home and noticed they smell musty, like they were packed away in a box. Musty. I’ve now washed them 4 times. Better, but still a bit musty.

2. A pair of shoes that fit correctly – Sadly, the feet and ears keep on a-growing as we age. My right foot, especially, seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. Consequently, I have only one pair of shoes that fit correctly. I’m tired of limping around in shoes that cramp my feet.

3.  A new camera – Cue harp music. Yes, I’ve been talking about this for a while now. I love, love photography and want to take it to the next level but every time I think I might be heading toward saving up enough money to buy a new camera, some gosh-darned thing goes wrong with the house, or the car, or an unexpected bill arrives on our doorstep. My current camera, a Canon bridge camera, is lovely. But it doesn’t have separate lenses. And that’s what I want.

Someday.

4. A vintage gas stove – Oh, how I want one. Preferably an O’Keefe & Merritt, like this one in Kitty Bartholomew’s kitchen from Country Living:

This is my all-time favorite. But I wouldn’t turn up my nose at this vintage Chambers model:

Also courtesy of Country Living. I love the generous work surfaces, the storage, the grills, all the extras that used to be considered essentials. Now, of course, they are not included in your average stove. And do I have to say that what I love the most is the vintage look? I thought not.

5. One of these Pure Butter or Cheese slabs – I have long been lusting after one of these but even the reproductions are expensive. Wouldn’t this look great on my kitchen island? This one is a reproduction carried by Joanne Hudson Basics. They also carry another favorite of mine, Emma Bridgewater pottery.

6. A new sofa – The one in the den is on its last legs. The loveseat in the living room is even older. Yikes. I’d prefer an English Roll Arm Sofa, like this one in linen from Restoration Hardware, but as you might expect the price is off the charts. And I’d rather it have a tight back. Loose cushions end up being a pain in the (fill in the blank.) At this point, I’d take one from IKEA. But, we are dreaming here, so let’s go for the Restoration Hardware model, in something more suitable for our household. Durability is the key here.

7. A pair of boots – Fun boots, maybe cowboy boots? Something stylish. Just because.

8. A second car – No explanation necessary. We need one.

9. Some built-in bookcases in the den – I have books, books and more books. I have long dreamt of built-in bookcases in our den. But I would have to hire someone to do it. Not that I’m not game to try it, I am. But we have baseboard heating and I don’t quite know how to construct them and allow for the baseboards. I would love nothing more than to have my books down here in the den. Out of the shed. Into the den. Out of my overstuffed IKEA Expedit shelves in the bedroom. Into the den.

10. Lots of coaching jobs in the new year – I need the work. We need the money. And I’m really good at what I do.

11. A trip to England and Paris with my husband – I’ve been to England 3 times. Don has never been there. I’ve never been to France. Don was there once, and came down with appendicitis. We’d like to go together on an extended adventure.

12.  A mudroom/laundry room – Just a petite extension off of the kitchen, with a new door to the outside, a full-size washer and dryer and a tile floor. Also, hooks to hang coats on, shelves for storage, baskets for mittens and scarves and boot trays somewhere other than the kitchen. Oh and if I’m dreaming here? Add a shower with a long sprayer so that I can bathe Scout at home. Easy clean up from things like the squirrel adventure last Sunday.

13.  Books – These books sound like they are right up my alley:

Authors share their favorite bookstores, past and present. Found here.

And this one, in the same vein:

Leading cultural figures share the books that have mattered the most in their lives. Found here.

14. Paying off our mortgage via the lottery or a mysterious benefactor or a great film role for Don – This is my crazy, out-of-the-park dream.  I want to stay here. But it’s really tough for us. We might not be able to. So, dear Universe: I’m putting it out there. I’m visualizing a check for the exact amount of money we owe on this house. I’m not going to try to figure out the how. I’ll let you take care of that. I’m just going to keep visualizing.

This is rather a fun exercise, making a list of practical and seemingly impractical things you need or just plain want. What would you put on your list?

Happy Wednesday.

The Day After

December 26, 2011 at 9:30 am by Claudia

This photo says it all: I wanted an iPhone for Christmas and Don (who is staying away from the computer more and more lately) wanted a vintage typewriter. I found this 1961 Remington Monarch on eBay and it’s a beauty! The  two-tone case is covered in a linen-like fabric. Hi-tech and low-tech happily coexisting in the Hill-Sparks household.

One day, I’m going to get a vintage IBM Selectric. I worked many an office job on Selectrics and I absolutely love them.

The rat-a-tat-tat of the keys was a constant yesterday afternoon. Don was like a kid again.

I hope you all had a wonderful day. Ours was filled with presents, dogs, food, music, dancing and more food. It started off with this:

My Christmas Coffee Cake. Don likes to butter the top.

Santa left some peanut buttery treats for the doggies. (Since we have no fireplace, the yule log via the television is on throughout the morning.)

Christmas Scoutie.

I’m always a bit sad when Christmas, with all the decorating and shopping and planning, is suddenly over. No Christmas music playing on the car radio, no Christmas movies on television, no beautifully wrapped packages…. I remember being very upset by that when I was a child. I suspect I still am that child on the inside. Just like I want my birthday to extend for a week, I want Christmas to be more than one day.

As to beautifully wrapped packages, full disclosure: I forgot to buy scotch tape, so I had to seal my packages with blue painter’s tape. Yep.

I’m glad you liked the photo of my mom, dad, brother and me visiting Santa in yesterday’s post.  Poor Meredith (my sister.) Every time she sees that photo, she wonders where she and my other sister figure into the equation. You see, there was just my brother and me for many years. Then, when I was 8 and Dave was 13, Leslie came along. Three years later, Meredith came along. So it was like there were two sets of kids. The older ones and the younger ones. Meredith, you were a beautiful child and I sorely wish I had a photo of you and Santa. Ask Dad if he has one. Then I will be more than happy to post it. After all, you are my adored youngest sister.

I’m off to run some errands. Have a great day.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
