There Are Times I Just Can’t Come Up With a Post Title

March 20, 2015 at 9:21 am by Claudia

3-20 deer watching Scout

A deer looking at Scout (who’s in her mini corral.) Right after this, Scout became aware of the deer. They engaged in a stare-off. (This was shot through my kitchen door, so there’s some reflection bouncing off the deer and the tree.)

What a beautiful animal.

I was going to say that there’s much less snow on the ground – and there is – but on this first day of Spring we are supposed to get 3- 6 inches of snow. I’m calling this The Last Hurrah. My only comfort is in the fact that snow doesn’t stay on the ground for very long come March. The ground is warmer, the angle of the sun is higher. And the temp tomorrow is supposed to be in the mid-forties. Nevertheless, the whole thing is a bit daunting, wouldn’t you say?

Don, the saintly man to whom I am married, came along with me yesterday as I searched for jeans that fit my no longer angular and now curvy body. He helped me find various styles in my size and patiently waited for me to try them on and discard them. Eventually, I found a style by Lee that fit well. Huzzah! And then I found the same style in black. So I bought two pairs. There was a sale at Kohl’s so I got them at a very good price. Huzzah again! Note: I want to write the plural of pair as pair because that’s the way I was taught. But I hardly see that anymore. What to do?

Then we stopped at Target to pick up a couple of items.

I rewarded Don (and me) by agreeing to a stop at Five Guys. He got his burger (yes, he does eat meat now and then) and we shared some fries. As we were heading home, Don saw that Dairy Queen was open for the season and somehow we ended up with two chocolate shakes.

How did that happen?

And how did I end up having Five Guys fries and a chocolate shake for lunch?

I’m not sure, but it was awfully tasty – and slightly wicked.

3-20 lamp

This is the lamp that I had on my sewing table. It’s been moved to the den because I need a stronger light here. It’s the Ranarp Lamp from IKEA and my plan is to get another for the studio but since I’m not working on anything up there, there’s no hurry.

Today might be a good day to do some hand quilting as the snow falls.

For the last time.

I insist on it.

Happy Friday.

Hand Quilting & Some Pie (Pi)

March 15, 2015 at 9:04 am by Claudia

3-15 pi day

Evidence of yesterday’s Pi Day celebration here at the cottage.

Apple pie for breakfast.

It rained most of the day yesterday and then turned very foggy last night. Since Don was out doing a gig, I was a wee bit nervous about his return home, but he made it home safely. All is well.

Today looks to be gray and windy. I saw the sun for brief moment, but it has disappeared. I will repeat to myself, “That’s okay. Gray is okay, because the snow is melting!”

3-15 quilting 2

After gazing across the room at the quilt ensconced in its protective cover every day for about a month and a half and doing nothing, I finally took it out of its bag and gathered my hand quilting tools together. I switched out the lamp on my side table (not bright enough) and spent about three hours hand quilting in the late afternoon. As always when I start hand quilting after a long break, the index finger on my left hand has to build up a callus to withstand the prick of the quilting needle. That callus isn’t quite there yet, so my finger is a bit sore today.

This quilt has very large squares, so when I take a look at it and think to myself, “I’ll do a square a day!” I quickly realize that my expectations need to be adjusted. I’m quilting rather densely and there’s simply no way I can do a whole square unless I’m willing to forgo everything else I have to do in the course of the day. A good lesson in staying in the moment. I’ll just do what I can do that day.

And of course, Dame Scout was constantly demanding something or other. She needed to go out. She wanted her dinner. She wanted me to start cooking my dinner so she could watch. She had to go out again. She has very clear ideas about the proper order of her day. My job, apparently, is to facilitate it for her.

Doesn’t she realize Mom is quilting? That the quilt is big and awkward and that Mom has to get up and rearrange everything before she can attend to her Dameship’s needs?

Short answer: She doesn’t care.

I do love hand quilting. It’s the only way I quilt. I’ve quilted everything – from a queen-sized quilt to a mini quilt – that way. It takes a lot of time, yes, but it’s very satisfying. And meditative. Someday I may send one out to be quilted because it can be hard on your hands and wrists, but for now, I’m doing it my way.

I realized after I asked the question about whether I should showcase the egg cups again this year that the way I phrased it sort of prohibited anyone from saying “No more egg cups!” in the comments. Silly. Ah well. It does seem, however, that most of you would like to see them again or for the first time, so I will highlight them sometime before Easter.

It’s the Ides of March.

Happy Sunday.

Snow, Galloping & The Quilt

February 11, 2015 at 8:52 am by Claudia

We managed to escape our little cabin-fever ridden cottage yesterday and took a short drive with Scout. She needed to get away, too. Nothing exciting, just some country roads. But at times, the view was breathtaking; acres and acres of white snow broken up by fences and barns and a house or two. It was a sunny day and there’s nothing more beautiful than sunlight on new-fallen snow.

2-11 how high the snow

As in this shot of the big corral, taken late yesterday afternoon. You can see how much snow we have by looking at the fence posts.

We ended up in our little town, where Don ordered some lunch to go while Scout and I took a little gallop/walk at the library. She needed to move, that girl, and her mini-corral just doesn’t cut it (though we are oh, so grateful for it this winter).

The view from our gallop. (Yes, I have to gallop, too.)

Don has to go into the city today. I have to go in on Friday. The temperatures are supposed to be frigid when I’m there, at least for this first visit. Oh, boy. Nothing like walking around the city in sub-zero temps!

Some of you asked to see the quilt I’m working on, so I’m going to share some pictures I took when I finished the quilt top. I was working in Hartford and my two colleagues, Mary and Robyn, held it up for me.

The fabric is designed by the talented Camille Roskelley. I love the colors she uses in her designs. They are happy colors and the prints have a wonderfully retro feel to them. This is to be a wall hanging and eventually it will hang on the stairway wall. The pattern is also by Camille – a very, very simple, yet wonderfully graphic design.

I pieced it with my featherweight, Mabel, who often accompanies me when I’m on the road.

I’m hand quilting it with lots of interlocking circles of various sizes. I was just beginning to quilt when I took this picture. (You can also see a mini-history of my photo watermarks! Believe me, there are lots more out there.)

Now I have to get back into the rhythm of grabbing an hour or two every day to do some hand quilting. And that will have to wait until I finish this coaching job.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
