Hand Quilting, Scout and Moving On Stage

August 30, 2013 at 9:08 am by Claudia

quiltonsofa

I have to admit, I haven’t been getting as much hand quilting done as I would like to. In fact, I’ve only had one stab at it this week. I’ve been getting home around 7:30 and, after making some dinner and tending to blog comments and emails, I have been too pooped to tackle it. My eyes get tired from following along in the script, writing tons of notes for the actors, and sitting at the computer screen.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

quiltdesign

I’m going to hand quilt random, interlocking, different-sized circles all over the quilt top. A simple design and that’s fine by me. I like to do something curvy when a quilt is very linear in design. The circles will also spill into the white borders on each of the blocks. I started in the center and will work my way outward. Today I will have some pockets of free time and I’m looking forward to a bit of meditative stitching. Looks like rain today.

Sob. I finished watching the last episode of House of Cards last night. It’s so, so good! Now I have to find something else to watch and, thankfully, several of you have made suggestions! I’ll have to go back and read them all. We had our last rehearsal in the rehearsal room and both run-throughs went very well. Today, La Dispute moves onstage with what is called a spacing rehearsal. The director and actors spend time adjusting to the set and the demands of the set. I’ll drop by to check on their voices in the space and offer advice as to the vocal adjustments that have to be made.

I thought I’d share a photo of Scout when she was here in the park a couple of weeks ago. Look closely and witness the hyper, slightly crazed expression on her face. She didn’t want to stay still and she definitely didn’t want me to hold her in place. She wants to get going! She makes me laugh, that little sprite. At the age of 14½, she is still up for adventure. Gosh, I miss her so much.

Maybe Don and Scout can come for a visit next week? Fingers crossed.

Happy Friday.

Pinning. With Actual Pins.

August 24, 2013 at 8:34 am by Claudia

I woke up this morning feeling particularly creaky. My back was really sore, I couldn’t seem to unwind into an upright position. What, I wondered, was the problem?

About twenty minutes later, fueled by some freshly brewed coffee, I remembered. Oh yeah, I spent over two hours yesterday pin basting my quilt. On my hands and knees. Hunched over. That might be the source of this morning’s problem.

But the adventure started before I laid it all out on the floor. Because I sometimes do things on impulse, i.e., buy the backing fabric online, I immediately had a problem. The ironing board was set up, the iron was heating up and I opened up the folded backing fabric to press it. What? Had there been some sort of misunderstanding? It seemed long and narrow, this 4+ yards that I had ordered.

Then it hit me. Duh. Since I usually order bolts of fabric that are especially made for backings – 108 or 110 inches wide – I forgot that this fabric was only 44 inches wide. Uh oh. Could I somehow salvage it by piecing the fabric together for the back?

The short answer is yes. But it added some time to my all-figured-out schedule. Live and learn.

If you’ve never pin basted, it involves 4 steps:

• lay background fabric out on the floor, right side down, taping it (I use painter’s tape) so that it remains secure
• lay batting on top of the backing
• lay quilt top on top of the batting, right side facing up
• starting in the center, pin all three layers together. I usually pin every 4 or 5 inches and that seems to work for me. Take care to pin the outside edges, as well.

Oh wait, there’s five steps:

• Get up after pinning and feel sore all over.

No, I meant to say six steps:

• Feel even worse the next day.

I know lots of people use a basting spray. I’m a bit old school. I pin.

Then, I experienced a mild panic when I couldn’t find my tin of hand quilting supplies. Did I forget to pack it? I immediately envisioned having to find the time to make a trip in the car to Joann’s or some quilt shop. I looked in the boxes I packed. Nope.

Oh wait, there it was, on the floor of the closet, functioning as a sort of stand for my iron. Why, I don’t know.

insidethetin

Ah, there it is, full of thread. And needles. And markers. But now that I look at it, I’m wondering if there’s any white thread in there. I usually use ivory or ecru or gray. I need white for this quilt. I’d better go look.

I’m back. There is. Sigh of relief.

There’s the rest of my pins! I’ll probably pin some more, just to make sure everything is secure so the layers don’t shift.

After all the piecing and sewing and pressing seams and  kneeling and taping and pinning and duck walking, my plans for starting the quilting later in the evening changed. I ate some dinner and watched 2 episodes of House of Cards instead.

readytogo

But it’s ready to go. (Take note of hideous nubby fabric on home-away-from-home chairs.)

A little Don story: You all know that I snatched my handmade quilt off our bed and transported it here to the apartment, right? I substituted our older pale aqua bedspread. At the time I told you that I didn’t think Don would care one way or the other.

The conversation during our ride back to Hartford:

Me: Have you even noticed that the quilt I made is gone from our bed?

Don: No.

Me: You didn’t notice that the aqua spread is back on the bed?

Don: (with a grin) No.

Me: I knew it!

See? At least I’ve trained him to make the bed at some point in the day.

Have to go. I have a very long day of rehearsal today. And another one tomorrow.

Happy Saturday.

Tweaking the Home-Away-From-Home

August 23, 2013 at 9:29 am by Claudia

Short of ripping out the dark carpet and replacing all the furnishings, I think I’ve done a pretty good job of personalizing this temporary home-away-from-home. There are pops of color everywhere. I’ve brought tchotchkes from home, quilts, bark cloth remnants, vases, flowers, table runners, books.

During my visit home, I grabbed a few more things. Time to tweak.

pillowonsofa

I added the pillow to the sofa. All that darkish green (not my favorite color) needed to be cut by a pop of color. Actually this is an IKEA bolster pillow and the cover is a vintage pillow cover I found a few years back. It has also lived on our bed back home. I love the nubby fabric, which reminds me of forties-era curtain or upholstery fabric.

I also brought this, from my little studio back home:

chalkboard1

The chalkboard I made that normally hangs on the back of a door in the studio. (Gosh, this apartment is a truly difficult space in which to take photos. Windows on one wall only. Very dark. Frustrating.)

chalkboard2

Anyway, I like this board and, though I always plan on changing its message, somehow it remains. Though, now that I think of it, I might erase those words and substitute Leonard Cohen’s. Yep. That’s the ticket.

photos

I added some pictures of my loved ones. Another piece of barkcloth covers the dresser.

And the other day, some fabric I had saved my pennies for arrived.

fabric

Do you remember this Bonnie and Camille print? You can see it here:

quiltwithfriends

It’s in this quilt top, both in some of the quilt blocks and in the borders. I’m going to use it for the backing. Yesterday, the batting I ordered arrived, too. You know what that means: time to pin baste all three layers together and hand quilt this baby.

I’m excited. I can’t wait to hang the finished product on our wall back home.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
