Christmas and Coffee Cake

December 17, 2012 at 7:42 am by Claudia

coffeecake

The Christmas Coffee Cake that I bake every year and that is an annual Christmas-morning-in-between-opening-presents-tradition had to be moved up on the calendar this year. I couldn’t let Don leave for California without a few warm yummy pieces of coffee cake in his tummy. So I baked it on Saturday, put it in the refrigerator overnight (this step is essential) and warmed it up on Sunday morning. And again this morning.

Best coffee cake ever.

I only make it once a year. We decided it must be this way. Otherwise, it would no longer be special.

The story of the coffee cake: When we were living in California, we used to shop a lot at Whole Foods. (I’d still shop there a lot if one was nearby. Sob.) One day, I grabbed a free holiday recipes booklet at the checkout and took it home to peruse. This particular recipe looked promising, so I made it for Christmas morning.

A huge winner.

We couldn’t believe how yummy it was, how moist (due to lots of sour cream), how perfectly perfect it was. Our annual tradition began that day. Fast forward a few years. We moved to New York. As I got things ready for that first Christmas out East, I realized two things. We had inadvertently put all the boxes of Christmas ornaments in storage (all decorations that year came from the local drug store) and I couldn’t find this recipe. Anywhere. I looked through all my cook books. I scoured every box in the eaves. I looked everywhere. Nothing.

In a panic, I emailed Whole Foods. I explained my situation and what booklet I thought the recipe had been in and asked if they had a record of it somewhere. The lady I was in contact with looked everywhere. She had no record of it.

I explained to Don that there would be no coffee cake this year. There was disbelief on his part. On mine, too.

I resigned myself to finding something else, though I knew it could never be as special, as tasty, as magical. A few weeks later, I got an email from that same lady. She had been cleaning out some shelves and, lo and behold, there was the booklet. She kindly copied the recipe for me and sent it my way. I’ve hung onto it for dear life ever since.

We’ll have another piece this morning and then, later today, I take Don to the airport. He’ll be gone for two months.

Scoutie and I will miss him terribly. She adores Don. So do I.

It’s going to be a little glum around here for a few days.

Happy Monday.

A Priceless Gift

December 9, 2012 at 10:50 am by Claudia

Friday afternoon, I heard the toot of our mail delivery truck’s horn. Lori, our friendly mail person, always toots the horn when I have a package waiting. She handed off a rather large box. I discovered it was from my friend, Donna. Donna is a fellow blogger who writes the wonderful blog, An Enchanted Cottage. We go back a long way, as Donna was one of the very first bloggers I met when I started blogging back in February of 2008. We have been friends ever since. We have a lot in common, not the least of which is our deeply felt love for all creatures. We are animal lovers, pure and simple. We believe in rescuing our pets, in finding a home for those dogs and cats who are in shelters and have been abandoned.

When I read Donna’s card and note, the tears started. And as I unveiled her gift, they poured.

Donna, who is an artist, created a piece of altered art from my favorite photo of Riley and Scout. Here’s the original photo:

I snapped this picture one day when I was sitting in the living room. It was one of those moments in time that I would have missed had I not had my camera right beside me.

Donna painted out the background and embellished the dogs with her hand painting.

Another view in the late afternoon light on the day I opened it :

Not only did Donna beautifully and lovingly enhance my babies, she matted the artwork and added a favorite quote. And placed it under glass in a beautiful white tray.

Don, who came home while I was unwrapping it, and by the way, Donna sent this to both of us, was stunned. He couldn’t believe someone would do this for us. I couldn’t either. But I know my friend Donna and I know how big her heart is.

I love that quote.

We love and miss our boy. Scout misses him. This moment in time, when Scout gently checked on her brother who was getting increasingly frail, breaks my heart and fills my heart at the same time. And now I have this unbelievably beautiful piece of altered art – this lovingly painted portrait of my beloved children – from a dear, dear friend. It is priceless to me, as is her friendship.

Donna lives in Massachusetts. I live in New York. We often talk about meeting up at some point halfway between our homes. It’s only a couple of hours away. Donna, once the winter weather is past, we are going to do it. That’s my vow.

Thank you.

Happy Sunday.

Adventures in Flannel Pajamas

December 2, 2012 at 9:42 am by Claudia

A weekend devoted to flannel pajamas. Yes, that’s what we’ve had here at the cottage. Yesterday a very rare thing happened. Don and I stayed in our pajamas all day long. It just happened. I got obsessed with deleting lots of old emails that were clogging up my in box, so I sat in my chair in the den for hours, reading each email and hitting ‘delete.’ Before I knew it, mid-afternoon had arrived and I looked at Don, who was also still in his pajamas (not flannel), and we made the decision to wear our pajamas all day long. Oh, rest assured, we took showers and brushed our teeth, but afterwards it was right back into our pajamas.

This morning? Another adventure.

I am not a morning person. When I come downstairs in the morning, I greet Scout while thinking the whole time that I must have some coffee and walk toward the kitchen door where I let her out into the ‘dog corral’ to do her thing. This morning, I let her out, watched her walk outside and then suddenly tear off in the direction of the back corral fence. Usually when she does this, there is something (rabbit, deer, squirrel) on the other side of the fence. I quickly realized, however, that this time that ‘something’ (a squirrel) was on the inside of the fence. And Scout was chasing after him, as Mr. Squirrel frantically and unsuccessfully tried to climb up the chicken wire to freedom. I was out there in a flash in my white socks and flannel pajamas screaming at Scout to stop. Of course, she was obsessed and not at all interested in listening to me and the squirrel was more and more panicked. Finally, I was able to wrestle Scout to the muddy ground and turn her back toward the house and, amazingly, she docilely went inside. I then put my muck shoes on over my wet and muddy socks and tried to help the squirrel escape. In the meantime, Don was shouting out the  bedroom window, “What’s wrong?!?”  Perhaps he was alerted by my shrill screams? After the squirrel made many frantic attempts to run up the side of the chicken wire, I managed to steer him toward a narrow opening between the fence and the house. He squeezed through the opening and stopped for a moment trying to catch his breath. I could see the panic in his eyes, poor thing. Wanting to make sure he exited all the way out of the corral to freedom, I walked toward him and he took off like a bat out of hell.

Lord knows what the neighbors thought. Thankfully, we don’t live right on top of our neighbors, so I’m hoping this little madcap adventure went unnoticed.

And, believe me, I am fully aware of the irony that my pjs have squirrels on them.

Mr. Squirrel was safe. Scout was muddy. My socks were ruined. All three of us were exhausted. And all I could think about was that I really needed that first cup of coffee.

Have you had any madcap adventures in your flannel pajamas? Or in your nightgown or non-flannel pajamas? Please share.

I’m still catching my breath.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
